Ok sir I may be the biggest Mori fan this side of the West(Im in the US) (I have seen her twice live. This young lady is real!) Liked and Subbed! There's been so much confusion surrounding her latest upload as live or not live. The Pandemic has really done a number on artists doing gigs etc. They've really had to get creative. Normally this company brings artists like her together in a live almost club like setting. (She's one of several artists involved)in this case ,that was just not possible. All the songs were recorded at home one take live. The sponsoring company then did post edit for audio only obviously someone in their home recording will need some audio balance. (This information comes straight from her in a live she did talking about the performances, as there are 6 in all) I wanted to clarify that confusion. I was reading the comments, and I see people trying to take little shots at her and mischaracterize what you said here. My Goodness your takeaway was huge. Idina is THE Elphaba and you put this young phenom as the closest to her that you have seen! That's a MASSIVE compliment and this was a performance from 3 years ago on a fan cam ! Musical theater fans (I consider myself one) have seen hundreds performing this song over the years, I'm sure you have as well. To say this is up there with the best by someone who knows what they're seeing, no argument from me! Thank you for taking the fans request and giving her a chance. I'd love to see more of her here in the future! Edited to add..I saw you have already reviewed the Legend that is Lea Salonga here. Lea is a huge supporter of Morissette! In a recent interview she called Morissette's talent "ridiculous ". I agree with Lea 1000%!

I am a big Morisette fan but the guy is right when he said that the Stages Session performance of this song was not live. Sure, Morisette actually sang that song pre-recorded, but before they posted it, they “processed” the audio, i.e. added some echo, adjusted the treble, etc. If they didn’t do that, the performance would sound “flat” just like when she was speaking before the performance.

@@Githerax You miss the point too. Mori's set was an intimate small venue vs Idina's huge concert orchestra venue. Mori's performance wasn't about reenacting the show, and still, she sang it better note for note than Idina did. One point that's apparent from Morissette's many other performences: If you give her just one song to sing and prepare for one performance her balance and dynamics is impeccable (Stone Cold, Akin Ka NaLang, Rise Up, Never enough, Emotions from Asia Song Festival etc). The latest performance was live! The voice and mouth movement is perfectly in sync and you can literally hear in one part where her chair does a sound like if she had hit it by mistake or something. Also there are some parts where some low notes are a little flat, if she was going to pre-recorded this, wouldn't she make sure those F3 would be perfect when she has hit some lower notes live almost in the second octave? They masterd the audio after to give it a better quality obviously but is a one take live recording.

I honestly think in terms of voice, Morisette is pretty high up there compared to Idina particularly on vocal ability. Delivery wise there's too much effort for Idina like she needs to push it to reach it. Also, in critiquing the performance of the two, they both delivered differently and should not be compared as it was on this reaction. Idina did a musical performance, she is musical artist and Morisette is a powerhouse singer. If Morisette meant to deliver this as a musical piece I'm pretty sure she would deliver it differently. She was there to deliver her rendition of the song. Just saying... On a side note, Idina will always be a good fit for animation. Her voice quality is really fitting for that.

I love Idina, I remember being 13 and watching Rent The Movie, and then being in university randomly hearing Defying Gravity. It went to my playlist and stayed there for years. I didn't even love the book, and I have the hard cover version, but Defying Gravity just resonated with me at that age. I liked this performance of hers so much too, it's just so light. I think Mori did a lot better in her more recent one, so nice to see her improvement through the years. Also, in the more recent one she didn't have an audience but her acting was awesome. I'm sure if she was auditioning, then she would stick to the original. However, this is who she is, she wasn't auditioning, she was doing her thing. It's weird because I feel some dissonance myself. Because I get your background but I also feel like these artists, in their own performances, should have some artistic freedom and people shouldn't react as if she was doing it to disrespect the musical. There are even some musicals that release mainstream versions of the musical numbers and they're so different. That's the importance of the context.

I would really like to see you react to the cover of Defying Gravity performed by Superfruit (Mitch Grassi and Scott Hoying of a capella group Pentatonix); Mitch does one of my favorite versions of Elphaba I've ever heard, and at the end does one of the notes higher than it's usually done on stage despite being male. Scott's performance as Galinda is mostly falsetto and isn't the reason to watch their cover, but they've been singing together for well over a decade and their voices blend very well. If you enjoy that you could also watch their medley of Frozen songs where they include Kirstin Maldonado as well (also from Pentatonix) who has also been singing with them both since at least high school. Kirstin has since acted in a Broadway production of Kinky Boots, and hopefully it's only a matter of time for Mitch as well because they're all excellent and met each other through musical theater.

This clip that you've chosen was a concert that was done in an intimate setting, where she had to keep making eye contacts to her audience even if she's singing musical. He's a musical theatre coach. His critiques are more on the stage approach. He wasn't shitting on her vocal technique, which she's very good at! 2. He chose the video where she performed it in front of a live audience. Not LIVE as in it was being filmed live. Glad the Lea Salonga comment section wasn't this eye-roll inducing.

Acting wise, Idina has the edge bec. she played the role in the musical. It was but natural for her to instinctively act that way. Morisette was playing to the local audience not really mindful of how it was acted on stage, which is why it was rendered in a pop kind of way.

Idina's performance is stunning and it's expected to be musical. But Morisette's performance here is not expected to be musical, so it's understandable that she had those runs.She's also not trained on musical. By the way, you have to listen to the latest cover of morisette of defying gravity. That was a live version and much more musical than this performance. you can compare that to idina's performance. it's so good.

Morissette Amon is one of the finest singers the Philippines has ever produced. She is definitely one of the best vocalists in the world today and among Asia's Pride. Morissette is so amazing that she has become a favorite of many many vocal coaches and reactors worldwide- generating for such channels literally tens of millions of views and tons of subs. Her signature is Akin Ka Na Lang, a Filipino ballad which is.becoming popular even outside of the Philippines. Even Malaysian superstar Shila Amzah made her own version. Many of her covers like Against All Odds, Never Enough and You Are The Reason have become the most watched covers (of the particular songs) or near the top ones. Her legions of fans span the globe and many follow her with utmost zeal and dedication. Thank you for featuring Morissette. Subbed. Best wishes.

I know Idina, i don't know who this girl is, listening to both this other girl is better. UPDATE Aug 22....I searched for that video the people here were referring to about this Morrissette cover of “defying gravity” and it’s definitely live with some reverb added and her cover is for sure way better than Idina’s and seven other versions idina has done. Are you sure you’re in the theatre business? You posted one’s best and the other one’s not so good cover for comparison. You shouldn’t be doing reactions because at the get go you’re definitely biased with your opinions.
@BigRedSpear Жыл бұрын
Old comment but deserved a response. The Gold Standard is Idina. Use the album vocal if you want a comparison. When Morrisette can perform the same way, while actually playing Elphaba for an entire play on night 236, then you can say this guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Idina had lived with and evolved the song through hundreds of performances and made choices driven by the character and the performance demands while the other is singing a cover. To say Morrisette is so much better that he shouldn’t do reactions is laughably stupid. He even addresses this in the video - she riffs in a way that wouldn’t work on the stage because it’s just another cover in her repertoire. Morrisette is an awesome talent and I think she could make the Gold Standard of an original song if she got a shot. You may say she has a better live recording of this song than Idina. But what you can’t ever say is that she put that song in the top 10 Broadway ballads of all time.

1. MUSICAL THEATRE COACH, means he reacts to how it should be in his industry. 2. There is a standard, also to those who do not know. 3. Morisette is a Musical Theatre Performer here in the Philippines before she joins the mainstream entertainment. 4. To me she sang this song wonderfully, but the reactor is looking for a musical theatre approach since the song is from a musical. Try watching performances here in youtube with AT THE HIPPODROME in its title you'll know what I'm saying. 5. Pre-Pandemic LIVE means , in front of Live audiences, yes in front of you... breathing not through a screen. 6. If she sang that way, may be the Musical Director gave her liberty to do what she wants. 7. Again, Morisette sand this song beautifully in this video.
@mark26884 жыл бұрын
I respect the honest constructive marks you made sir. I also appreciate how you mentioned that you don't really know anything about Mori. I would just like to hit on some pointers. 1. This version was performed in a location where the acoustics isn't the best. Not even conducive for such performance tbh. Hence, the mic sounding awful, the band trying to keep up with her and Mori herself trying to stay in pitch for the entire song with so much competing noise. 2. I think you forgot to consider the intention of the singer and why she delivered it in such a way. The audience were casual music listeners, not musical theater enthusiasts. I would even say, IMO, that she delivered it that way so people can relate to it on a more recent, more modern, more NOW of how someone would tell a story, therefore a kinda "popish" rendition of the song. Again, they are not musical theatergoers. 3.The singer is first and foremost a POP singer. Although, she starred in a musical theater production called "Camp Rock" where all the songs are POP, it would still be not on par with Idina menzel. Not hating here or anything. I don't think we need a 30 page dissertation on why she delivered it that way. HAHAHA try to react to some of her performances in pop. You'll be amazed by how good she is. PS.The latest version you were referring too was live. :)

To the people raging in these comments... PLEASE. CHILL. These are two beautiful performances - and obviously different genres/types of performances with a beautiful song. Both of these singers are completely AMAZING. So please. LOL That said, Idina has a terrible habit of making me cry. I had the honor of seeing her live in If/Then, and I was completely GOBSMACKED. I wept through most of the second act tbh. That said, Marc, if you're willing, I would be interested in just... seeing more Idina reactions - out of curiosity - because while I agree that she has been critiqued for her lives (and she's admitted herself realistically to the struggles at times with lives and sometimes you hit the note and sometimes... you don't), I absolutely adore her storyacting through song. She often brings me to tears. (Either in laughter or sorrow. XD)

3 things. 1. This is about the song and vocal abilities in a concert setting. 2. The problem with most musical theatre fans is that they tend to box music into a specific way of singing and shut out other stylistic choices. Just saying. :)
@vic70ria4 жыл бұрын
But Idina’s performance here it isn’t a copy of her stage version. She does several changes in stresses and tones. I’m mean it’s close, she did this for a while, and that’s what the audience came for. Yet she does switch it up some.

@Gulf Kanawut this isn't true, I love musicals and also pop music
@sarahneuren70574 жыл бұрын
Well. They have to be sung and acted a specific way or the mood, flow, and meaning of the song and play get interrupted. Like take for instance At the End of the Day from Les Mis, or Without You from RENT, or The Sound of Music from The Phantom of the Opera. You change one way about how they are sung or performed in the middle of the show and it breaks the flow of everything. The fourth wall goes away and you risk losing your audience because the way the song is performed doesn't fit with the rest of the musical. It's not so much that we "box music into a specific way of singing." It's more in order for the musical as a whole to come across to the audience as intended the songs must be sung/performed in a particular way or it just does not work. Also, as a theatre person, the songs do elicit certain emotions anyway. I also feel it does an injustice to the creator and musical itself to change a number too much. Especially on as big as Defying Gravity.
@Ezlots034 жыл бұрын
It is not boxing music to a certain kind of singing-acting but more on retaining the meaning of the song through music. Musical songs are written with a specific purpose and some changes done it will erase some of the meaning to it. Unlike some pop songs that you can just twist the meaning of it and it will be better (i.e. RESPECT by Aretha), you can not just do that in Musical Theatre songs
@polscipolsci4 жыл бұрын
@A Gay Has No Name Idina's live performance of this song is not impressive. She looked like was she struggling to reach the high notes towards the end of the song. The vocal was stiff from start to finish. There wasn't even a moment where it became smooth and soft. When I watch musical theater, I usually focus on the vocals, especially when an artist sings an emotional song because that is where I can connect. Gestures and other elements are secondary.
