​@Shadow Booster gen 3.5 might see softer tyres and some AWD so definitely tons more time to unlock with just those changes. I think Di Grassi said 3 to 5 seconds can still be unlocked for the evo. Gen 4 rumours are also starting to come out, they are suggesting slick tyres, 600kw (805hp) and AWD. Those numbers seem like a huge leap, could see FE faster than F2 depending what they do with aero but that won't be until 2027.

It is clear in the sector that it does not need so much downforce, it lost only 3 tenths, even though it has less than half the power of an F1 car.

They develop the drivetrains currently. It's mostly a cost issue why they don't allow teams to develop more (Battery, aero etc). FE is just too small a series to allow that much development. However, it should open up over time as the series grows.

@@lewis8552 there should be more investment in FE. To me, they’re trying too hard not to be F1 and it‘s difficult to watch it. What if FE became the sort of F1.5 with electrical engines for good F2 drivers that just didn‘t get an F1 license yet? Or a series for drivers like Ricciardo that haven’t found a seat but want to keep racing?

​@remphey it sort of already is that place for those types of drivers. The recent rookie test had ex F1 drivers and F2 drivers that just missed F1, sizing up the series. Plus already majority of the grid are these types of drivers. As for investment, it can only get the investment it can for its size. They had that mini manufacturer boom at the beginning of gen 2 but a lot of them left because the audience wasn't big enough, also covid didn't help. They're still sort of recovering from that downturn during covid at the moment.

I agree and even fe drivers are saying that with different tyres their csrs could go faster although they must have tyres like that because fe doesn't want to litter earth with used tires so they use all-weather tires(and that's good)

FE cars are heavier and have less aero and less HP. As far as racing goes (though I think this also applies more generally) hybrid technology is far superior to purely electric vehicles. I'd love to see a series that would let teams compete to develop racing EVs

This might be a surprise to a lot of people, but the 2023 FE car is actually about 35-40kg lighter than the new regulation F1 cars

I don't have video, but I do have some very revealing numbers. Even at Monaco, on F1’s slowest track, F1 cars were miles ahead of FE in 2023. So were the F2 cars. And the F3 cars. Fastest Qualifying Laps: F1: 1:11.3 F2: 1:21.05 F3: 1:23.2 FE: 1:28.9 Fastest laps in the race: F1: 1:15.6 F2: 1:21.7 F3: 1:25.1 FE: 1:31.1 At that time differential, F1 would lap FE about every 5 laps or so. The closest time that I could find to an FE 2023 car for a top runner at Monaco was the 2022 Monaco Historique Serie E winner, in a 1973 McLaren M23. Stuart Hall put it on pole with a 1:29.4. He also won Serie D that year, in a 1971 McLaren M19A, with a pole time of 1:30.1.

FE lacks a lot of grip because of the grooved tyres and the lack of downforce. FE cars are heavier in quali since they have to carry all the battery even if it's full or not. Fe cars weigh around 848kg's while F1 cars weigh only 810 kg's (may differ) in quali. On race pace F1 cars weigh more than FE cars when you add fuel, FE cars weigh the same since electricity does not weigh.

And on such a tight twisting track the smaller and lighter FE cars are going to have the best chance at competing with an F1 car. But it's still not even close. Still excited for the FE Gen 4 cars. The racing is pretty decent. I'd watch more of it if they had a deal with F1TV but FE is a competitor to F1 not a little brother like F2 or F3.

Someone asked below if there is video comparing FE to F2 and F3. I don't have video, but I do have some very revealing numbers. FE cars are probably heavier then F1 cars but mostly it's the grip on track that already is a few seconds loss on that lap. Back in the days the grooved tires were introduced in F1 to slow the cars down because they were going faster then was comfortable for the FiA, the grooved tires ate up seconds of time. Also the FE's tire compound is a lot harder then F1, just look at normal streetcars they also have way harder tires. Further, you are definetly missing some horses under the hood, the tech simply isn't ready for that yet. But 6-7 seconds slower is really nothing to be ashamed of, my turd on 4 wheels won't go that fast even if I tried.

Horsepower wise it's going to take maybe another decade to reach f1 levels with the current battery tech. I know the talks for gen 4 are saying the cars will be around 800hp vs the 470hp currently. That will be a huge step forward but that won't be until 2027, so to even get to around 1000hp like F1 is going to be a while.

Current technology is already ready for qualifying times close to F1 (to hold a full race is something else). Slick tyres, qualifying battery and aero, and maximum 4 wheel power (800HP), some of that will happen with the Gen4.

Formula E is amazing! Series is 9 seasons old and they got car what produce 50% of energy while they drive and they got car what has no hydraulic rear brakes (only emergency rear brakes). When Formula E Lost second there and second there compare F1 You don't see that on eye. Infact much smaller FE looks much faster on TV than SUV size F1 cars.

0:28 the formula e car is slower, so they do not need to open a lot to do the car in high speed, whilst the formula1 car is much faster and needs more angle to do the corner fast

It's more to do with the tyre grip. These cars it's very easy to either lock the tyre or lose grip so turning and braking really upsets the car. For FE you want to straight line your braking as much as possible which is why the line doesn't sweep in as much. I reckon you'll see this difference even between gen 2 and gen 3.
