I don't think he was talking just about California, I think he meant that athletes get taxed by which stay they play road games in, in addition to where they live. But it doesn't make what he said any less ignorant. Learn tax laws so you can take advantage of tax shelters just like any other rich person does. Any team that has won a championship, especially several like Golden State has, the main players on the team should be able to easily do what Magic Johnson did (as well as a relatively unknown player in Michael Williams) and get to know some of those wealthy season ticket holders who sit court side and ask them about business and financial stuff. That's how Magic got a bunch of his information on starting his movie theatre business. Even Junior Bridgeman consistently invested his money and he's doing really well. The highest he ever made is said to be $350K for a season, and he's said to be worth over $600M today.

NBA players are paid on a per game basis and are subject to the taxes of the city and state in which the games are played. So a Houston Rockets player will owe the state of California taxes for 8 games even though Texas has no state income tax.
