The March Brown wet fly is a classic and versatile pattern that has earned its reputation as a reliable choice for anglers targeting trout in various water conditions. Known for its effectiveness during the early to mid-spring months when March Brown mayflies hatch, this wet fly mimics the natural insect in its nymphal or emerger stage.
Typically tied with a slender and slightly tapered body, the March Brown wet fly features a color palette that captures the nuances of the natural mayfly. The body is often crafted using a combination of brown and olive dubbing, creating a realistic appearance that closely resembles the nymph as it moves through the water column. The fly's soft hackle, usually made from partridge or hen feathers, imparts a lifelike movement, adding to its allure for trout.
The March Brown wet fly is effective in a variety of water types, from slow-moving pools to faster riffles. Anglers often employ this pattern with a traditional downstream swing, allowing the fly to drift naturally in the current and enticing strikes from opportunistic trout. Its versatility extends beyond imitating March Browns, as it can also be effective as a general attractor pattern, making it a valuable addition to any fly angler's arsenal.
Whether fished in rivers or streams, the March Brown wet fly has proven itself as a go-to choice for anglers seeking success during the spring hatch. Its realistic profile, subtle coloration, and enticing movement make it a timeless and effective fly pattern for those looking to connect with trout in various fishing environments.

Just my opinion, I like the extra hackle on mine. Every fish that you catch will nock a few fibers off, so the extra fibers will let you catch more fish on that fly

I’ve tied both sparse, with one side of the hackle removed, and bushy. Not sure the fish have a view provided the fly is fished right. A better debate might be around upstream, across and down, or downstream only! 😜

I have tried both, but I like the halfway house approach.

The man who taught me fly tying as a teenager 40 years ago Roger Cowgill from Rigmaden on the river Lune swore by sparse minimal tying. One thing he did do was to add a single turn of peacock herl infront of the hackle on partridge & orange, greenwells but not on snipe & purple or March brown?

It’s why fly tying is so much fun you can put your own spin on things.

If the fish think its food they'll take it regardless the number of turns, it never troubled me I used to buy mine in Bert Murrays pet shop down the street. Lol

Personally I prefer it a little sparser but it probably doesn’t matter to the fish.

The number of turns of hackle in a traditional wet fly is subject to much debate as you say. I think most of the debate surround the turns required for a North Country Fly. Some say two turns only, others three. I have a few NCF’s tied in the early 1800’s. It is quite obvious that a) they used feathers much larger than modern tying, b) as a result they included more turns than a modern dressing, probably because they were frugal and did not waste. The Late Malcolm Greenhaugh advocate two and half turns. Reality is ALL work so it is a personal preference.

In addition, the flies I have show that the older tiers were not adverse in trimming the hackle to length.

Not to keen on trimming hackles but I get where you are going. I often think we over think fly tying after all we are trying to catch something with a brain the size of a pea. That said it is fun!
