This is a common fiddle tune called "March" cited in an 1836 book called "The Instrumental Director: Containing Rules for all Musical Instruments in Common Use, Laid Down in a Plain and Concise Manner to which is Added a Variety of Instrumental Musick of the Richest and Most Popular Kind Extant." This book, along with its earlier 1829 publication, is one of our best resources for common music, as well as common instruments. The book lists all of the most popular instruments in common use teaches beginner musicians how to play them, and offers about sixty pages of popular contemporary music. This song was commonly played by fife and drum groups before its 1836 publication as a fiddle tune.
The violin played in this video is an original privately owned piece made by Nathan Moody (1769-1815) of Newbury Massachusetts in 1787. It is a typical original American-made instrument in the baroque style. Violins used in the 1830s would have been a mix between the old baroque style and the newer modern style, which is still used today.
