The BMW 3-Series has been the compact luxury benchmark for ages, and most companies target the 3-Series relentlessly as a result. Refreshingly however, Volvo has charted a different course with the S60. With a sharp focus on safety, comfort, luxury and efficiency, the new S60 sedan is the un-German luxury sedan from Europe that happens to be built right here in America. The ultimate expression of Volvo's un-BMW philosophy is the T8 plug-in hybrid system which delivers 0-60 numbers like a BMW, and hybrid efficiency that would make Lexus jealous. Toss in one of the best interiors in the segment and the S60 may just be the new benchmark...

I also think you guys missed a beat on the limiter. Volvo announced its implementation starting in May and that Care Keys come standard on limited cars. You will find none of the MY2020 Volvos in the US come with Care Keys as standard, certainly not S60s because nearly the entire inventory was produced before May as the plant was idled due to a combination of COVID-19 and low demand. The MY2021s have started arriving, however, and they all have Care Keys, confirming the limiter.

As this Volvo is more then 187 inches it is not a compact car even by US standard. The room in front of the center console fits my iPhone 15 Pro Max perfectly also with the USB cable connected so pretty sure its made for either the guy who does not put a wallet around his/her phone OR the guy who wants to forget his keys in the car. 😉

Alex, my man, just wanted to thank you for doing such a great job with reviews of electrified vehicles. I picked up the S60 Recharge a week ago in part thanks to your reviews. I was myself leaning toward S60 T8 / Recharge over BMW 330e but you saying you would rather have the Volvo over the BMW sort of helped me muster the courage to actually pull the trigger. Having had a BMW before but never having had a Volvo before i needed that bit of encouragement. I watched two direct comparisons of Volvo to BMW and both of them chose BMW as the winner ... but of course neither of them actually understood the Volvo system and why it is superior to the BMW system, and both of them made the amateurish error of comparing AWD Volvo to RWD BMW and not realizing AWD BMW had much worse fuel economy ... i basically dismissed both of those reviews and took your advice instead and so far i'm glad that i did ! your reviews of the Volvo hit on many important details like it being made in USA or Volvo selling the highest percentage of plug-in vehicles versus any other brand which other reviewers miss. quite simply without your reviews i would probably be driving an inferior vehicle right now instead of the awesome Volvo S60 Recharge :)

I also like amber for aesthetics reasons. But safety-wise, I can make a case for why red rear signals are potentially safer: in poor visibility, like fog, seeing a red blinking light in the distance gives a quick visual confirmation that you are definitely looking at the rear of a car and not at a car coming at you. I admit that this may not be a very compelling reason since most cars now have DRL so it should be fairly obvious to distinguish between a car going in opposite direction vs same direction. But if a car doesn’t have DRL, then for a driver to be able to distinguish quickly in poor visibility whether that blinking light is coming from the rear of a car or the front is a safety advantage in favor of red rear signal. That said, I still prefer rear amber signals because I think they look classier, especially for luxury segment.

It may not be as athletic as some of the sportiest models in this segment, but if I was looking for a more comfort-oriented compact luxury sedan, the S60 would definitely be at the top of my list. I’d certainly take a Momentum/Inscription S60 over, say, a base A4 or a luxury version of the C300. I’m just bored of the German entries in this segment and I find it refreshing how unique the S60 is overall. I’d skip the R-Design and Polestar Engineered trims, though, because the S60 really seems to excel as more of a comfortable luxury car.

@Victor Hugo The video is actually wrong. The 112 mph limiter was announced to start in May 2020, but US production of this car was shut down. The limited cars also come with a Care Key as standard which, if you shop around, you will find none of the 2020 models come with. So 155 mph for MY2020 S60s in the US, 112 for MY2021. Heico has announced that they are working on solutions to this limiter and to expect more form them about it in Fall 2020.

I have a 2019 T5 MOM in red with the exterior styling kit, 19 inch wheels, and some interior packages but not nav. Wish it had paddle shifters and the full digital gauge cluster, but other than that, I love it. Had I waited, could’ve probably snagged up an R-Design loaner on a good lease deal. Definitely a lot less common compared to its counterparts in the segment and has more road presence IMO. Would’ve been tough to decide between the red and the bursting blue if I was shopping for a 2020.

I think the discussion on engine power needs some...revision...because the power itself is irrelevant. Discussing power alone would have you believe a T6 is almost comparable to an S4, especially if you opt for the factory Polestar Optimization option, but that is not even slightly true because the T6 is, in fact, slower than the A4 Quattro 45 TFSI on account of the car being heavier and Audi underrating their engines (like all the Germans do, because the provided figures are supposed to be "worst case" scenario). It doesn't make sense to mark competition down on power if the performance derived from the available power is better.

I literally did not buy a great deal of a car because it had red turn signals. Volvo does not seen to realize that orange turn signals are MUCH safer imo. Pet peeves of mine are red turn signals and lowbeem cut off that is too high. In the last few years I have been feeling like most drivers are flashing highbeems on only to realize that it's the lowbeems that angle up every time the car accelerates. And red turn signals have almost caused a crash or two because a car changing lanes while feathering their breaks might as well not even have signaled at all.

Alex, I really enjoy your videos and channel and this is why I am posting a comment even though commenting on youtube videos is generally a bad idea. I appreciate your no-nonsense explanations of a lot of the details, but your description of the Audi drivetrain as being "rear biased" because it's mounted longitudinally is at best very misleading and serving to perpetuate a myth that Audi and Subaru's marketing teams surely appreciate. I'm not going to argue about the technical details because it would take too long and also would be an interesting future video, but the reason why base model Audis are FWD is because the vast majority of Audi cars (the advent of SUVs has changed this somewhat) sold are FWD only, and this is fine for their customers who are predominantly Chinese. The A3, A4 and A6 were not even available with any form of AWD in any trim (other than S or RS) in China until the last generation. There are technical reasons why Audi sedans use a longitudinal layout but they have nothing to do with whether their AWD systems are "rear biased" or not, and after Audi stopped using mechanical Torsen differentials in most of their cars, even the longitudinal ones, it's not even physically possible anyway. Nor does having a transverse engine prevent a car from having a mechanical differential and "full time" all wheel drive, Lancer Evos, Celica GT4s, Lancia Delta Integrales all had transverse engines and AWD that could allow them to drive the rear wheels independently of the front wheels, and were thus more "rear biased" than any of these new Audis. I do enjoy your videos generally though so you should do a video on this topic!

Unlike many cars I’ve driven or owned, I feel like the Volvo gives you a reason for the price. I wanted one too but can’t afford it. Volvo’s are not discounted. Ever. The salesperson put it perfectly: "Our customers are not price conscious. They know what they want and do not compromise “. Also: you should tell Sofyan that he he should discuss the extensive use of aluminum and ultra-high-strength steels and body adhesives when comparing this to a Subaru. @Shamur Stewart It's the principle, especially on a car that does 0-60 in 4.4. I wouldn't buy it new or used because of the limiter and I doubt it will be anyone's track day choice because of that too. It's a decision that alters its appeal to me.
@delerium75

@Shamur Stewart The principle is significant if Alex spent a paragraph mentioning this in his review. It's significant if other reviews or publications mention it as well but I guess we'll see as those roll out. I'm assuming you're trying to invalidate or minimize the point by using quotation marks around "car enthusiast," using the laughing emoji and of course 'bub'. Those reflect on you, not me.

@@delerium75 I suspect if you're shopping for a Volvo, speed governors arent high on your priority list. If you are very inclined, like any car, there will be ways around such a governor with a tune or ECU flash. Not a big deal at all in my opinion.

How do you not mention the G70? It's price and performance fall right on top of this Volvo. Car of the year last year.

I was about to make this very comment. The G70 has been piling up serious praise and winning comparisons. It may not be one of the top sellers, but it's one of the most competitive cars in its class, especially considering its price. It should have been in the comparison instead of the Q50.

DO NOT BUY A VOLVO! I am the current owner of a 2019 S60 T6 Inscription and the vehicle has been a complete nightmare. It is plagued with quality issues and has been in the shop more than all my previous cars were combined, I am in my late 30’s. Worse of all, dealing with the Volvo dealership network and Volvo USA has been even a worse experience. Endless circle of taking the vehicle to the shop to have quality issues and defects documented then calling Volvo USA for resolution but receiving no courtesy or care. I bought a $60k piece of crap that I do not even trust to drive more than 30 miles from my house. Asked them to buy it back or forgive my loan, would not. Asked them to give me a replacement vehicle, would not. Even though I have a service record the thickness of a dictionary on a car with 33k miles on it. They do not care about their customers unless they are selling you the car, after that you are on your own!

AMBER all the time! I still don't understand what it's wrong with the NHTSA in your country.
@afcgeo882
@afcgeo882 4 жыл бұрын
The NHTSA doesn’t control safety standards, but also... amber has never been shown to be safer than red. It’s just a different standard because of design history. Back in the 1950’s, European cars were MUCH smaller than American ones and had tiny lamps. To tell the difference better, they chose to have a different color for the turn signals and side markers. That was never an issue in North America, where tail lamps were huge, so they used the same bulb/color.
@afcgeo882
@afcgeo882 4 жыл бұрын
In Europe, Volvo is a standard, not luxury car and it’s priced as such (cars are far more expensive in Europe than North America.) In North America, Volvo is trying to compete in the luxury segment and it cannot. The 4-cylinders, the front wheel bias and the lack of performance are obvious. In turn, they have lots of non-luxury features.

Nothing wrong with that. Been leasing all my cars for quite some time. New car every 3 yrs, always in factory warranty, not paying for depreciation, able to negotiate a big chunk off MSRP and able to sell it at the end of lease and in in some cases for more $$$ than the amount owed at end of lease.
