Alex and Team Alex on Autos, If this is your last video of 2021, I just want to congratulate ALL of you for another outstanding year of car reviews. Of the dozens and dozens of densely informative and consistently rational reviews produced throughout the last year, I have to say the Prius AWD review of July 23 was the pinnacle. Your ever-growing catalogue continues to be a critically important, steadfastly coherent, highly objective and quantitative resource for car shoppers and car enthusiasts. Heck Alex, you even throw in a little apt humor from time to time. I am sure I speak for many other SUBSCRIBERS when I say we are all looking forward to your upcoming Lexus NX 350h vs Venza vs RAV4 Hybrid review as well as all the others. Best of luck in 2022!!! :D

"America's lighting laws are pretty stupid"...love it Alex!😂 I still love the dash-to-axle profile of the S90 plus the interior remains very comfortable and well designed. I think the car has aged well and still stands out. I do like the stubbornness that Volvo still practices and dances to their own beat. I've been waiting for long-term reports of the turbo/supercharged/hybrid reliability of these engines, but I don't hear of many catastrophic issues. Early models had teething issues, but it seems like Volvo worked them out. I still believe the V90 is the best thing produced from Volvo. Such a striking wagon that I hate to see not for sale anymore here in the States. It looks wayyy better than the E-Class wagon and more sophisticated than the Audi Allroad.

Power adjustment to the steering wheel is the other item the S90 does not have compared to a BMW 7-series, but how often do you adjust it anyway...never. But has heated and cooled back seats, head up display, massaging front seats, modern and not overcluttered middle stack, 360 camera, rear air suspension, blond nappa leather, dual tone steering wheel, upgraded headliner, leather wrapped sunvisors and overhead handles, illuminated door sills, power extending thigh support. Auto open and close trunk from inside and outside the car and from the remote too. Aluminum and wood galore throughout. It's very, very luxurious. And I love the Scandinavian design and Thor's hammer headlights (they turn with the wheel turning). I'm 6'4", but still ton of backseat legroom behind me. This car is way overlooked for what it offers at the price point. Very few on the road. I drive the T6 Awd Inscription with all the available options. My first Volvo. Great choice and even better price compared to the oh-too-popular German competition.

I so rarely comment, but you made a comment on having mild hybrids on all vehicles is better than a few electrics. This is so true. Raising all fuel eco only by 3mpg is better than a few by 20. I was working on San Francisco’s New Central Subway. One of the preliminary designs talked about an option that would remove a 6mph section with a 20mph section. This was much better than raising a 30 to 35mph section. Same concept here.

Got a Magic Blue, Blonde leather S90 T8 in Inscription Pro a month ago (after a C Class) and boy, has this been an upgrade and a half or what. Such a stunning car - unpretentious, understated, and achingly cool. ALL of the additional options are so brilliantly worth it; and I'm so looking forward to the preconditioning function in the winter - entering a warm and toasty car in the mornings! I'm 42, and I feel like instead of joining a Members-only club, I've bought one. Love it! ❤

The S90 is a very underrated sedan. It’s a tough choice between the A6 and 5 Series. The E Class is great for the price tag is a tough pill to swallow when you match up the options of S90 or A6. Alex, I think your analysis was spot on. One thing I had a problem with was this being Volvo's flagship. This car screams anything but. If this car is evaluated at its MSRP, then it's more palatable. Its large backseat is really it's only, major selling point IMO. The competition is within a couple of MPG, which makes the hybrid thing a non factor IMO.
@markmiller3279
@markmiller3279 3 жыл бұрын
That few MPG more is a solid 10% increase in efficiency, with no negatives. I agree that it's unfortunate this is their flagship. If they're going to position themselves as a true luxury brand they would benefit from something better equipped - I think the S90 is big enough already.

General Motors was mocked when they released mild hybrid pickups and large SUVs, 15 years ago. Unfortunately, the general public saw the few MPG improvement as meaningless. What they failed to understand is that the reduction in absolute fuel consumption was significant. The media didn't do it justice (because MSM sucks).
@themanthemyththebanger
@themanthemyththebanger 3 жыл бұрын
Or maybe General Motors lacked the leadership to keep going down that path instead of letting folks say "I don't get it" and ditching the program. Remember how they had mild hybrid power in the Impala and the truck-based SUVs at the time? Why wouldn't they stick to their guns and fully hybridize those models while trickling the technology down to smaller, less-expensive models? Lack of vision and leadership, that's why. Also, having worked as an automotive reviewer during this time -- a side-hustle to full-time newspaper work -- I can tell you their communications to journalists were not doing a great job selling the "big picture" of corporate fuel economy. GM wasn't painting that picture explicitly enough. I would go so far as to say they did a pretty terrible job of it, in fact.

I like a lot about Volvo of today but can’t get past the Chinese ownership and feeling that I’m spending a lot on something that will be worthless in 10yrs and by then prohibitively expensive to keep running. As many have said, they only make sense for lease and finance customers who trade frequently.

@@markmiller3279 I agree in general for the European competition, but there are Japanese (and even some American) competitors who are superior in that respect. While the Scandinavian ambiance is nice, I’ll trade that immediately for increased reliability.

IMO mild hybrid cars are total bs and just makeup to a pig. The only true hybrid system I recognize is the F150 with powerboost. There's an small electric engine that powers the truck a low speeds, then can be run in tandem with the gas engine, all the while, the gas engine is recharging the battery for continuous use at non-demand usage. And the genius move is the truck can be used as a small generator to power electric appliances when parked. This is where all manufacturers should concentrate their efforts and dive deep end into total electrification. It's a happy medium where gas engines can squeeze more efficiently out of every gallon its engines burn.

I dont see how a world can go to full EV or even hybrid right now. The batteries typically cant last 20 years. Many start having problems after 10. Think about the used market.

Frankly, if it's not a plug-in hybrid, the vehicle is an overpriced piece of you know what, with doo doo for resale value - as by the time you get around to re-selling it, everything else will have twice the value of those "interim" POS's. I apologize for my harshness, but seriously, regular hybrids should NOT be kudoed by automobile journalists anymore!
