Have you also seen or owned the work from Jose Augustin Arnanz? He made me a Rada/Pallavicini style rapier that is absolutely beautiful. And his stuff is geared more towards fencing use than Marco's. So while it is art, it begs to be used.

absolutely gorgeous, If I may ask how comfortable is it in the hand with all the work?
@LondonLongsword Жыл бұрын
Very, there is no roughness to any of the work. Much more comfortable than a wire wrap.

Are we gonna engage with the irony of making a thibault rapier without any of the features of a thibault rapier ?

It’s great isn’t it. It was commented on before commission 😂

The screw? Really?

Nothing wrong historically with screws securing the cup. Lots of high end examples. And practical.

While they is a gorgeous rapier, it is NOT a Thibault style. The knuckle bow gets in the way with his grip and Thibault mocked cup hilts.

The wonderful thing about language. It is perfectly able to be a Thibault rapier, as all the engraving/pierce work, reference Thibault’s work. While at the same time not being of the same type as the sword used in his treatise. I’ll point out to Mark (the owner of this sword) that he can’t hold it in a Thibaultian manner, which will upset him no doubt as he defaults it with every bloody single handed sword knucklebow or no.

Another point I have made elsewhere which deserves mention here as well. Thibault is (in my opinion) working in similar form to McArthur in that we shouldn’t rely on the hand protection, using correct measure and placement of the blade instead. However, now we are training with masks which changes somewhat the nature of play, and if we protect our faces, we protect our hands, if not, as time has proven over and over again, you get broken fingers. As such (with due deference to my favourite author) we add to the conceit of masked play, and will use cup hilts in all freeplay.

@@LondonLongsword To be honest, NOT using a cup hilt is giving up an easy advantage - although, the point could be made that it blocks visibility a bit in the right angle guard. The owner can still take a Thibault grip, if necessary, by holding the knuckle bow to the inside - it just makes switching to the hybrid cutting grip awkward.
@JaredThorlakson Жыл бұрын
Also, as a sharp for cutting, you wouldn't want to do Thibault's grip anyways. Regardless, it is a beautiful piece of work.
