Ciao, Alexal. I see that no one has yet specifically answered your question. Mengoni here sings in "Grico" (or "Griko"). In Puglia and Calabria there are many villages where is spoken (unfortunately less and less) a kind of Greek. The Griko has naturally been contaminated with Italian (better: with the Apulian dialect) over the centuries. This happened partly as a legacy from Magna Graecia, partly as a legacy from the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium).

This is a song of pain. You can notice it at the end of the song where there are cries of anger. They are the same as those that the Salento wives used to throw when their husbands left for Germany. Salento is the southern part of the Puglia region. The words of the song popular is a mixture of ancient Greek and Salento dialect. I hope I have clarified your doubts. I love Marco!

Of course as you guessed rhis was not one of Marco's songs 😊 "Notte della taranta" is a folk event taking place in Puglia region (known as Apulia abroad) during the month of August celebrating the "pizzica" (another name for the taranta) a traditional local dance and the local ancient music and folklore, each year a musician from the most popular ones is called to reinterpret old music and songs and folk crews of dancers and singers are called to perform and one or more singer from the most rated are the stars of the event. Also Diodato and Mahmood were guests in the past editions while last summer when Marco was guest the musician was Dardust (which you may spot in the video with bleached hair and the pink shirt) and established Italian producer who you might have heard mentioned because be often collaborates with Mahmood and also performed during the interval show at Eurovision 2022 in Turin. I love this performance because I believe it showcases Marco's talent not only he was able to hit all the notes he achieved the difficult task of not soundl boring while singing a very repetitive song and you could feel all the raw emotion of an.ancient song about immigration and longing and struggle. Also the musical arrangement was superb imho.
