I imagine deciding to do full blown weathering like this is a turning point for going from a good painter to a great painter... The thought of having a pretty much perfectly painted mini, to then "ruin" it by purposefully making it not look perfect is a scary one xD
@MarcoFrisoniNJM
@MarcoFrisoniNJM 3 жыл бұрын
I admit that's a scary stage! In the first part you give up a good part of the control you have on the paint job looking for happy accidents from the natural physical behaviour of the paint. Then you have to regain full control adjusting every detail!

As usually an amazing work! I am always amazed how well you can mix colors to achieve totaly different tones that I would never expect as the end result. Hmm, there is a grim dark style, there is a bike and the chaplain.. Somewhat Dark Angel'ish, so... should I call it even or should I abuse you more on the topic? Hah! As I think to myself I have to agree with what Moe Harley wrote in the earlier comment - I would love to watch your attempt on grim dark Ghazghkull Traka too! Such a lovely model, you would do wonders with him. Great job!

The model looks fantastic, awesome work dude! I really love the difference in finish being part of the overall contrast to the model. You mentioned AK's heavy body metal acrylics and I have to recommend their True Metallic line. It's a wax based paint that can be buffed to a high shine. It can be painted on thick too and create amazing texture, like impasto techniques. It interacts with enamels and oils great, blending weathering effects into the metal really well. I guess cause it sort of is an oil paint, just contains less saturated fats making the oil solid at room temp instead of liquid. Cold wax paints are a whole rabbit hole to jump down which I think you'd find fascinating if you haven't already seen it. The pigment is not as fine as Alclad but perhaps a little finer than Vallejo Metal Colour. VMC and True Metal are my go tos for nearly everything I do.

man, so good. I still struggle so much on my last steps of volume definition, where to place edge highlights, which to do, which to ignore, what colors to use, i always end up half too bright and half too dark, and none of the colors feel completely right for the highlight. i could spend a week at a texture/final highlighting class.

Thank you much for creating this wonderful videos and sharing your skill and knowledge. I am not very long into miniature painting and have a short question. As an acrylics canvas painter I was taught never ever to use acrylics over oil paints. Since you use mostly your oils for washes how long have they to dry until it is save to use acrylics over them?

Hi Marco. First may I say what a massively talented artist you are. I found your channel while looking for a review of scale 75 artist paint and have become hooked. The Zorn pallet got me thinking about my own modelling which is generally 35th scale armour with the odd figure, so much so that I brought your recommended colours along with a few others. along with watching your colour theory videos. I feel ready to tackle a figure. Please could you recommend a single figure (not to small as advancing years makes the eyes wonkie lol). Also do you plan any work shops this year. Thank you keep up the fantasic work, Kind regards Ian

Hi Marco! Love your videos and the way that you inspire me to try new techniques. I have a litte problem when it comes to white ink(liquitex) on black primer(vallejo or the same molotov you use) when using contrast on it it reactivates the white ink sometimes and it just get all smoshed upp together and the black under reapears. Have you ever experieanced this? If so what do you do not to make it happen? Keep up the good work and I cant wait for your next video!

Bravo, Marco! I really like the technique of applying ink as a filter over metallic paint (I got some duraluminium after seeing you use it in a previous video, and have fallen in love with it), but I am having a little trouble getting the right consistency for the ink when applying it with a brush (I don't have an airbrush). Do you have any tips for how to thin the ink, or is it just a case of adding the right amount of water and practising until I get it right?

@MarcoFrisoniNJM
@MarcoFrisoniNJM 3 жыл бұрын
Well, if you think about it this is a more logical layering of events; highlights are the highest lights of and even weathering should have that kind of modulation to render the sensation of the volumes underneath (otherwise it just tones down everything killing every contrast). External lights and OSL even in real life are the last thing hitting an object and they envelope everything in their colour: basic material, textures, dust and grime... They are all UNDER the light! (Light don't get dusty 😅)

Question: Inks are kinda fragile right after you paint, even a wet brush can remove the ink layer. But you apply the oil directly to the ink without varnish. How long do you wait before applying oils on top of the ink layer?

Another excellent video! Thank you Marco :) But I don't understand one thing: You have put so much work with the environmental lights in the beginning but except for the exhaust pipe I don't see any of those colors on the finished model. Is this just an issue of the video? I am working on my first 40k army (Orkz of course!) and want to do them in a somewhat "clean", detailed grim dark style.

I was asking myself the same question. Where is the Red-blue / Orange-Yellow contrast from the beginning gone to ? ^^' Might have to be the fact that we see it on video and not real life.. But from what i can see, all the paint coverage just made those layers completely dissapear :/, or my eye is just not trained enough yet.

I think it modulated the black and made it less boring in the end, but because of its glossiness it's very hard to see on the camera as it can't capture the whole dynamic range between bright bouncing lights and subtle variations in the very dark black.

Hi Marco, this is truly a masterpiece and I love how you work with inks over the metallic base before you unite it all in black and I wanted to ask if you plan something simillar with TMM red. I've seen your another awesome video with Blood Angels but compared to this that TTM red seems a bit bland (no offense). You are mentioning in that video that it is a less time consuming technique which makes you think of making a complete army this way but thinking of making a few complex works like this but in red my question is: would you use the same inks (yellow, burnt umber, magenta, blue etc.) as a background for some transparent red colour or would you approach it completely different? Many thanks and keep up the great job!
