What was Cicero's attitude towards the First Triumvirate?
@ThersitestheHistorian5 жыл бұрын
Privately, he was not a fan and hoped that Pompey would come to his senses. Publicly, he spoke on their behalf when asked to do so, at least after he had been humbled by exile.

@@ThersitestheHistorian were Cicero and Cato close allies in the Senate? Did they pretty much agree on the same stuff?
@ThersitestheHistorian5 жыл бұрын
@@tacocruiser4238 Yes and no. They were on the same side most of the time, but they had very different backgrounds and personalities. Cicero mocked Cato's purity in his letters to Atticus and he thought that Cato and some of the others were uppity. Cato and other nobles were willing to work with Cicero, but they never fully accepted him as their equal since he was a new man.

@@ThersitestheHistorian maybe that's why Caesar tried to be friends with Cicero..... Why did Antony want to kill Cicero so badly?
@ThersitestheHistorian5 жыл бұрын
@@tacocruiser4238 In large part. Caesar knew that Cicero was a useful asset since he was Rome's greatest orator. Antony hated Cicero because Cicero often made jokes at his expense and delivered a series of orations called the Philippics directed at Antony, calling him a tyrant and enemy of the state.

He's hard to evaluate. His consulship was a humiliating disaster but in general he seems perfectly competent, even magnanimous.
@Kyle_Schaff3 жыл бұрын
“Magnanimous” is not the word I’d use to describe one of the foremost opponents of Pompey’s proposal for veteran settlements who also obstructed his co-consul from doing literally anything because he was a spooky rival lol Btw, not looking for an argument. Your comment is two sentences posted almost a year ago, and I’m not that kind of person. Just wanted to respond to that final sentiment
