Disagree. At the highest level he gets cooked. And he’s probably the worst defender in all of tier 1 nation rugby. He’s not an elite kicker either. A flyhalf like him needs to have a team which dominates a game first, before he can be effective. The moment they face a Springbok pack for example, he’s on the back foot, and legitimately plays terribly every time.

this was from a show looking at the highlights of both him and Fin Smith. The pretty clear conclusion for everyone is Fin Smith is the better international 10, marcus is a great bench option for running at tired legs, although if the bench is a 6-2 split then he’s the casualty

I recall him scoring a try against the Boks (my team) a while back. But your point about his defence, or lack thereof, is valid. As we all know, Farrell isn't the best defender or indeed tackler, but he puts the hard yards in.

@@davesmith826 What? He’s never scored against South Africa, if you watch the games you’d know he does nothing against decent teams. The Springbok rush defense and forward pack dominance means Marcus gets no forward momentum, and in those scenarios he’s useless. He cannot manage a rugby game. He plays well when he plays fast, but you can’t do that at the highest level. Elite flyhaves can slow everything down, play the territory battle, and win you a game with tactical and defensive kicking and playmaking. Smith is an attack only player. Defense is not just about when your team doesn’t have the ball, a great defensive flyhalf is contributing on defense when he has the ball, like I said through winning the territory battle, through contestable kicks that result in your team having all the forward momentum in the collision zones in rucks, etc. He can sidestep and make a nice pass or cross kick every so often. But there’s a reason the likes of Handre Pollard, Dan Carter, Wilkinson, etc are the ones who win tournaments and big games. Even someone like Finn Russell struggles with it, but in the last few years he’s really improved those aspects of his game when it comes to managing the team, and the results speak for themselves.
