Recording individually will certainly give it more character and variation, but recording once and duplicating would create a more consistent chorus. I'd say if you do the latter, make sure to vary each chorus in the instrumental in some way so as to keep it interesting. Take this as a recommendation and not a rule. Thanks for the interest! This dude just HAS that voice, man. 🔥🔥🔥 However, I was expecting a bit more helpful tips... like: - How do you position the mic? i.e how far should it be to your face/vocal source? - How to use pop fitler, or *what to use as alternative* ? - Sing whilst standing up or sitting? - How to do *very basic* mixing in the DAW? - Instead of re-recording the whole take with lower gain, how would I just re-record a selected segment?

Amazing and soulful vocals Marcus! I'm not a noob but this was a great perspective for when the focus is a demo and it turned my brain around as far as how I might want to record my own vocals which often can be frankly, traumatic when you have to switch hats from recording engineer to vocalist and back again.

The Sm7b is a gain hungy mic. Using the ssl 2 Interface alone to provide the much needed game leave the interface struggling . The solution, more clean gain. To support the Daw/ interface.

I was shocked it clipped so much with an SM7b with no kind of in-line booster (like a cloudlifter or dynamite). That SSL2 interface has gain for days!

That's what you call digital clipping. It's a digital product not a real analog pre amp. Generally you need a compressor when tracking vocals so that you don't clip the converters. That's why I'm not a fan of stock pre amps on interfaces because there is no why to insert a compressor.

It’s the sound of SM7B, with usual low mids boominess that it has. I have that microphone. The best setting for this microphone is presence boost only.

You talk about the clipping like its a bad thing. For this song, through the SSL preamps it seemed to to be quite lovely. Clipping on soul vocals gives it an old OLD school classic vibe for songs like this if you ask me.

Digital clipping is actually bad. You need a compressor when tracking vocals.

@@jackieclark8253 Name any Pro Engineer that doesn't. Its important to control dynamics. Typical vocal chain often used in the industry is Mic Pre amp -> Compressor -> EQ -> AD Converter. Virtually every Beyonce or Adele record ever recorded was recorded that way.

Did he really record this at home, though? It sounds dead dry, so it was probably recorded in a studio? I think it would be helpful to indicate what was done to treat the room at “home” to make this recording possible without picking up unwanted reflections, etc.

That microphone is a Dynamic mic. It works really really well in any acoustically untreated space! SHURE SM7B👍🏼

You don’t need one, but it’s recommend. I personally recommend a Fethead as you don’t need two cables and can directly connect it to the SM7B.
