I don’t use the parcel hook normally, but it did get me out of a pinch. Years ago my friend told me to drive because she had a few drinks. She threw her keys but threw them into a drainage by accident. I hyper extended the parcel hook on my explorer, tied shoelaces to the key ring. With the hook, I was able to grab on to one of her key rings and was able to get the keys back up.

Hi Marcus, I use the toothpick to open up zip ties, use the parcel hook to put the chain back on the bicycle (not often but thankful when it happens and I have the victorinox it feels so nice to not have dirty fingers) My first knife was a Climber that I used for scouting. I donated that to my brother, I now EDC a cybertool 34 for work, and have a champ that stays at home. A jetsetter is a new addition to my keys as I don't want to EDC the Manager as it's been discontinued and prefer to keep that at home. As a side note on your pen technique in the hook, put the end of it right against the hinge with the L shape facing down, it'll sit better in there than what you demonstrated in the video!

As a Cub Scout leader, I gave the Super Tinker to my (8 y/o) Scouts because of the scissors. For me, the Compact and Explorer are my two favorite EDC SAK’s. I like the Explorer over the Huntsman because it includes an inline Phillips driver and scissors. To save the blade, I also like how the Victorinox can opener has a sharp edge; I find it perfect for opening packages. Shockingly, the awl and magnifying glass have proven more useful than I anticipated. I used the awl the other day to modify a Gatorade cap to work on a water bottle rocket launcher built for 2L bottles. Similarly, I find the magnifying glass helpful for reading small printed serial numbers on products in an office setting.

While you peobably won't need that hook every single day, I've still found it very handy in situations where I have to pull or tighten some wire, rope, zip ties, springs etc, also some random cases of improvised problem solvings. It is a strong hook and the knife makes a decent handle for it. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone carrying parcels with it, but the more you use it for different tasks, the more new uses you find for it.

I am pretty eager to see what victorinox comes up with for bladeless options and if TSA says anything. From what I have read, they still have issues with even the small scissors sometimes. On the removable blade front, I thought I read a recent policy where if something had removable blades, even if no separate blades are apparent anywhere, they still weren't allowing them. Would suck to run into that with a nice custom and no time to do anything about it.

Tooth-pick: Not the best, but you wipe it off with a tissue paper and a bit of water. Bantam combo tool: It's also a can-opener. Not a great one, but can be used for that. *Explorer:* No, wasn't in the video, but arguably one of the best all-around Urban EDC Victorinox models out there. Definitely worth a look. (Also has the magnifier from the much thicker Swiss Champ. And, as you get older; that magnifier becomes a lot more useful.)
@geraldmcmullon24657 ай бұрын
I have the Swiss Champ since 1989 (older than the one shown). The pilfers are still good. I do not attempt to twist or pull on objects that are well beyond a short tool and not heavy duty. There is enough torque for small hex nuts. I hold wires that I solder and screws held in place when starting to tighten. The scissors have a screw and that has become loose and will not remain tighten. The later version has riveted blades as well as the hook on the back for parcels but doubles up to hold the pen for better grip or even blades from electrical saws for small tasks or in difficult to get to places needing something different to the wood cutting saw. Although I have doubts about the fish scale remover it is a good pry bar for staples. All the other tools I have used. Main tool use are scissors, nail file (metal saw), blade, Philips screw driver and the insert small flat head for (eye) glasses and magnifying glass. So my choice starts with mountaineer then ranger and champ.

The issue with the Victorinox is that the uses are limited by your imagination. In the case of the hook, I used it a lot in the field, in camp, for countless uses such as removing a stake from the tent, I also used the pliers to carry hot things But at least for me, in an urban environment the queens are minichamp, compact, explorer, and cybertool (additionally they can be supplanted by a swis champ carried in the backpack).

Backstory / trivia on the Victorinox parcel hook tool: In the early 1990's in Switzerland, it was introduced on pocket knives to aid in carrying old newspaper bundles that were criss-crossed wrapped with twine. The twine would bite into your hand when carrying heavy bundles and this was a tool asked by Swiss customers for their pocket knife to make it more comfortable to carry them to recycling. Recycling laws changed at that time in Switzerland compelling residents to recycle old newspaper, in addtion to recycling glass, aluminium, plastic bottles, etc. This is why the "hook" is relatively narrow, the optimal diameter for a few strands of twine...

Scissors are a must for me! I've carried the Executive for something like 30 years. I've tried several others but like the Executive's form factor; two layer, 75mm, twin blades. After watching lots of video's, and hearing others worship of the Compact, I purchased one and have been trying it out. What I like about the Compact is the more robust blade and scissors. I miss the file on the Executive that also doubles as a phillips screw driver and also miss the small blade. I also really like the lighter weight of the Executive. The Compact has certainly earned a place in the rotation; but the Executive is still my go to EDC Knife. To be sure, habit plays a large part in my preference! I will confess that of late the Compact has been my EDC of choice, I've come to appreciate the more rugged blade. What I miss is the nail file that the Executive has.

The best step up from the Classic Sd is the 74mm Executive. I do prefer the larger scissors and larger file on the 91mm Champ but then you have to get a mountaineer which is so close to the more useful ranger and more bloat with the Champ. Executive keeps it simple. You could also make a pouch to store spares from the Swisscard to get larger scissors, the mail file/screwdriver and letter opener/blade and add longer pen, tweeters and toothpick from 91mm range creating a different form factor to the Swisscard.

There’s a lot to unpack here. First my top 5 would be in no particular order: the 580 clipper, the sak card, the cybertool M aka 34, the compact and finally the mini champ. With regard to your custom tool I would have had the driver in the center the scissors knife and combo tool on the sides, I would have kept the hook and toothpick for reasons I’ll explain in I bit. I’m a firm believer that a pliers based multi tool (what ever you decide to carry) and a sak knife go together like PB&J, one can not exist without the other. So I normally carry the super tool 300 or wave depending on the day, and one of the sak knives I mentioned earlier. Add a bit kit and I can handle just about anything my day might throw at me. When it comes tools I like to have variety, not too redundant but to sparse either. So for me a tooth pick is a must, food always does with food does in people’s teeth, but I do clean it regularly. Finally why I love the hook, and will seldom leave home without it. It was summer time and I was walking to my car after an appointment, and you guessed it I locked my keys in the car. Fortunately my windows were slightly rolled down enough for me to use the saw on my leatherman to cut a tree branch, then use my paracord bracelet and compact hook I was able get my keys back. To conclude I’d rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. Great review I enjoyed hearing your thoughts. ❤

My first SAK was Grand Prix model. I used it for 25 years then retired it in favour of a cheap multitool, then quickly upgraded to a Swisstool Spirit X. Nowadays, the Deluxe TInker with a file would be my perfect knife. Since the Champ was on a REALLY good sale at just over half the price of a deluxe Tinker, I bought that instead. (It actually cost most of my Canadian Tire money + $10 in cash) I figure for the price, I can carry the extra mass. But the fish scaler was the first tool I use: had to fish a sheet of jammed paper out of the office printer, and didn,t want to touch the hot drum. The magnifying glass is surprisingly useful for reading the price per gram or per unit in stores. But I doubt I'll ever use the wood saw. The Grand Prix knife is in its leather belt pouch in a drawer under my bed.

The toothpick is worth having, but never for putting into your mouth. It's a light-duty and non-marring pry tool, it's a way to grab and pull a nail nick of other tools you just can't open. It's a cleaning stick that can reach into places you can't reach with anything that isn't pointy (and it won't scratch most of them). It's a "toothpick" because of its size and shape, not for how you ought to be using it.

Pliers and parcel hook are good for working on a bicycle. Pliers can unscrew nuts. As to weight of carry, I carried a Huntsman and never noticed. I now carry a Handyman, same size as the Cybertool 34, and barely notice. Trick is to use a pocket clip to hold it vertical. But I also don't often wear jeans, so I guess of you like your trousers to be figure-hugging with tight, useless pockets, you need a Compact! 😉

I use the toothpick on my Victorinox regularly! I'm usually at a restaurant or on break at work when I'm using it. I wash it with soap and hot water after each use. Then I wipe it down with an alcohol swab.😉

I really need to look into the custom options I would live to have something like your custom white Nox. I actually use the hook with the file on the back as a file, using the nail nick on the end is perfect for pressing in on standard bicycles valve stems when changing tires, Twisting in small hanging hooks which I did recently, pull tabs on cans. There are other uses, but I'm glad its there.

my ideal SAK would be… a Companion Lite Deluxe Plus… with the diamond file on the back of the hook… in purple👌

I always carry my Compact. Once we had to make room for a small excavator at the office, so we tied a thin rope around the pine tree branches and I held them in place with the hook. PS. I even use the toothpick rarely. I wash and disinfect it in case I have to use it. Every single time.

I carry the Cybertool L. It has everything I need, but I don’t need the fish descaler or the magnifying lens as I’m young and still have good eyes

I carry a Bantam in my pocket everyday, and keep a Compact and a Camper in my car to equal a Huntsman and have some redundancy. I love your Compact Cyber Tool. I think it would be really great if someone could take your custom and adapt the retractable writing pen from the 58mm, then add one more layer with the magnifying glass and a custom awl? The tool that normally comes on that stack is a phillips screwdriver, but with a bit driver you wouldn't need it.

Great video! For me the hook is essential both for carrying plastic bags from the supermarket and to untie knots (especially when I’m playing with paracord)! For the pliers, I prefer the handyman, and I’ve had to release some bolts from my bike once and it handled great. Just subscribed, loved your channel!

That’s a really good tool set on your custom one. I’d be happy with that but the one I keep thinking I’d like would be the 84mm Sportsman but with the addition of scissors. That would be sweet. Like you I’ve had the very rare moment of using the corkscrew to save the day. Party at my sister’s and her corkscrew snapped. My moment to shine! I’ve actually put the parcel hook to use recently too. The side panel on the bath got knocked and pushed in slightly. The gap was too small for a finger or almost anything else but the parcel hook was perfect to get in there and pull it back into place.

I have yet to get the cyber but absolutely love the bantam, rambler and tinker deluxe, carry the 3 everyday. Have so many others, like you first one as a kid in the early 80s. Keep it up, love the content. Now I will be looking at getting the cyber next

I use the hook for pulling out the small metal steaks out of the ground (I have kids in sports and we put up tent thing for shade and need it to steak it down)

Do you throw always your fork and spoon after use? No you clean them. So just clean the toothpick. Wipe it of and clean it more thoroughly when you can. Thanks for a good video.
@jaymarble72947 күн бұрын
Or throw away your toothbrush after each use? I think the reactions about the SAK toothpick are on a kind of loop. We just decided that off all the things we put in our mouth and reuse, the SAK toothpick is the deal breaker. I use and reuse mine all the time...Sometimes I do more that just wipe it off, like wash it with soap and hot water.

I use pilers very often it is very, surprisingly very durable when unscrewing nuts, cutting cables, crimping cable end caps. I've had SwissChamp since my 18s (present from grand father) and for a long time I carried it everywhere in my pants pocket, it's not that heavy. Unfortunately, phones are bigger now and documents, in the form of various cards, also take up a lot of space, so I carry it in my backpack. As for the hook, yes, I sometimes use it when I had to unexpectedly buy a lot of groceries from the close local shop and the bag cut into my hands. I just hate their springs in scissors, I wish the use WENGER (owned by Victorinox) scissors and pilers in all models (Victorinox Evolution S54).

I've seen leather with the awl. It was a quick job! But I've made several belt holes which is a mistake. You're supposed to cut the side by the buckle and re-sew the buckle.

I've had the Cybertool for ages, but when I saw the Compact today I ordered it right away. It's got everything I need in only 2 layers. A winner. I like your custom version, but for me it's already too big. And if you use the needle on all you family, why do you need use the tooth pick? I use them all and all the time! You haven't mentioned the file on the parcel hook which actually gives it a use. Thanks for the video, informative and entertaining as ever, you're a star!

I have a Spartan that I EDC. I keep trying to convince myself that i should get another model, but i can never actually decide what i need more. I really like having a nail file, but i also love the small blade and they're mutually exclusive. I also like the scissors, but i dont want a three layer knife. So, i always argue myself into buying another, and then argue myself out of it.

carrying a firestarter is a great advantage, just like learning to change a tire. You never know when you will need it and it might not be in an optimal situation, so yeah use them and learn how they work.

I took huge inspiration from you and this video, and just recieved my own version of the cyber compact in the mail today, made by Wes and sent to europe. It is a wonderful combination of tools in this small package, althought I made a few variations compared to yours.

I liked your video but I must say that you didn't mention that the Huntsman has a saw as well,and it is something I find useful when cutting wood for kindling.

So how does it carry, I’m in between getting the 2 layer (without scissors) and the 3 layer like yours (with scissors). Does it feel too big?

I actually have used that hook on a victorinox to carry a couple of those plastic bags you get in the grocery store. I had come across the info somewhere that that is what it's for so decided to give it a try; not so good, easier to just use your hands in my opinion.
