Atomic Blonde still managed to have believable action with a female lead. In most of the fights, she knows that she is at a disadvantage so she uses the environment as a weapon to even the odds. In the stairwell, she is trapped and cannot do that so she almost dies.

Any action scene with Charlize Theron is good. I gues it comes down to picking an actress with phisicality to match. Scarlet Jo's Black Widow is another good example. She gets her ass handed to her on daily basis when coming across a very strong apponent. Her skills and experience is what keeps her from dying. And the directors magane to showcase that very ell on screen.

Brawl in Cell Block 99 is clever because you'd expect Vaughn's character to crush that man's head in like in every other grindhouse/gory movie, but no. He only stomps halfway in, grinds his face across concrete, then flips it over to show his face completely peeled off. Like damn Zahler is scarily creative when it comes to gore.

Kate Beckinsale in the Underworld movies made me believe in Girlbosses. And it's funny, because that saga if full of both the best and worst of movie fight scenes. You just have to look at Marius and David walk menacingly towards each other in the middle of the final battle in Blood Wars, just to scream, and do nothing (search the Return of Selene to see what I mean).

The marvelous thing about the bench fight in the first Bourne film is how it develops the character - Jason Bourne is largely an unknown to the audience and to himself. The fight is a moment of realization to the audience and himself of "Hey, I can fight."

Marcus, I happen to know the reason the French Apartment fight in the Bourne Identity was the best in the series. They trained for four weeks and shot for a week and a half to nail that scene. Matt Damon decided he didn't want to do that for every fight from then on out, so they adopted the "Quick Cut" style so prevalent after. It was clearly a way to hide the fact he wasn't a skilled martial artist.

As a teen girl, I was working towards my first black belt in the 90s and yeah, I had Cynthia Rothrock to look up to, but I loved watching VanDamme and Norris rep my fighting style and aspirations. What annoyed me wholesale was that men were not allowed to fight woman back then. It had to be woman on woman fights only and I felt that held my training back as, when I was partnered with a man in the ring, he’d be hesitant to fight me as that wasn’t what was done. It’s shifted now and I can celebrate the equality of men fighting woman on screen as equals (and least more so than it ever was before). Of course, I get punched much more often by men now too, so…. equality! 😂

I understand that there are critics of the “shaky” Bourne fight scenes, Supremacy in particular, but bear in mind that he’s meant to be this super über spy who’s adept at adapting to his circumstances with speed, efficiency, lighting fast reflexes and brutality. It’s not clean, it doesn’t make sense but a real fight rarely does. Jeremy Renner was great in the third Bourne, I wished his character and Matt Damon’s character had met up in the last instalment. The Raid fights are without a doubt in a class of their own as is Jackie Chan, but it’s hard to argue that their influence on the action genre isn’t evident in cinema.

I can't think of a favorite trilogy so I'll cheat and say the Lethal Weapon franchise. The action isn't top notch but we keeps me coming back to the films is the story of Riggs and Murtaugh throughout the series. Richard Donner, Joel Silver, and Shane Black managed to take a cheesy cliche plot point about "unlikely partners forced to work with one another, one plays by the rules and the other is a loose cannon" and created an endearing story about love, family, and forgiveness. It comes off really sincere thanks to how well Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are together. They play off each other so well, and have such great comedic timing. Add in the fact that with each addition in the franchise comes great reoccurring cast members that add to the family, memorable inside jokes, and a great story that in my opinion could not have ended any better that by the end of it you feel like part of the family. It's honestly one of my favorite film franchises to watch of all time. I'm filled with excitement at the beginning of my watch and a bittersweet feeling by the end of it. Truly a great film franchise.

I though Vince Vaughn was great in Freaky, even though the movie was so-so. I think I mentioned it before but I'll mention it again because it's a point your brought up in the video, about how the violence in Craig Zahler's movies being quick and brutal to emphasise how dangerous and critical the violence can be to the story. The same goes for the violence in the TV miniseries Shogun, this years (2024) remake. All of the fights in the show are quick and decisive and it makes the tension leading up to violence that much more palpable. I love Train to Busan. Phenomenal film. Nobody can ever tell me Con Air isn't a masterpiece either. I will hear no criticisms. 🤣

I never got the impression Eli was blind, as he always looks right AT people, in their eyes, and turns his head to look when people are coming at him - I always thought he just knew how to read braille, and the twist was just that Commissioner Gordon finally got his Bible, but he couldn't use it.

Just found your channel, so I don’t know if you haven’t looked into yet, but Blue Eye Samurai has some really good fights built around its narrative and used real stunt people to previz most of the action! I feel like there’s a different “heaviness” that comes from referencing actual human movements when translating it to animation.

That's Chin Ka Lok (who is a good actor, director, action choreographer and martial artist himself) doubling for Jackie. He did that for most of Jackie's movies and the most obvious one is in Thunderbolt where he doubled for Jackie for quite a majority of the movie doing all the more complex kicks. I would still prefer covering Donnie's Hong Kong movies over Jackie but the majority speaks. Also there some incredible well shot fights from Scott Adkins movie like Ninja 2: Shadow of a Tear and Undisputed 3 as Boyka. Sure they're B movies but that doesn't make them any less awesome. Adkins is so underrated.
