I'm actually not sure myself but I believe the actual blade of Rivers of Blood isn't made of blood magic or something but just coated in cursed blood. The rough looking edge may actually be from many MANY years of use - Okina is supposed to be a master after all, one that apparently ended up serving Mohg.

Something else for the Hand of Melania is that she can slide her hand up the blade so the "grip" slots into a retractable bit in her prosthetic's forearm, giving her significantly more leverage.
@saltefan59252 жыл бұрын
The slot seems to be in part connected to a spring, which with the change of pivot point gives her both leverage and the ability to "bounce" the blade with a cut. The blade is as tall as her, and she looks to be roughly 8 feet tall so more leverage is very handy (pun intended)

I just wanna make a correction on the Serpentbone Blade: when you actually look at it being held in game you can see that the guard isn't parallel with the blade. Well the part on the blade's side is, but the part on the serrated side curves inward and around your wrist. If you use it in your left hand it actually goes around the outside of your forearm, which provides significantly more protection and makes me thing it might be intended to be left-handed.

I've been using it as a left hand sword, paired with RoB (pve) I only just discovered RoB, even just using it in solo play I feel like I'm committing a cardinal sin

@@TiddyTwyster Yeah it's pretty cool, but I've never used it because I've seen how easy it makes the game lol. Though the Serpentbone Blade has the same Ash of War without the blood blade- Double Slash, which can be found in Sellia and applied to other katanas and a whole host of other weapons (including greatswords and halberds lol). It's one of my favorite AoWs so I put it on a lot of weapons. If you like the moveset and want a less OP katana with similar range I'd throw that on a Lightning or Keen Nagakiba, it's pretty great.

I thought the uchigatana was the transitionary design between the old tachi and the katana we know and love today. When I think "budget katana" I think of tabagatana (lit. bundled swords) which were mass produced to be the standard issue sidearm of the ashigaru.
@velazquezarmouries2 жыл бұрын
An uchigatana can also be a tachi blade on katana mountings like a handachi
@santojorge2 жыл бұрын
the uchigatana is not a budget katana, it IS what we think of as a katana, specifically the curved, medium length sword used by the samurai after the Muromachi period for combat on foot and later in the Edo period as one of the two blades they would carry (along with a wakizashi). Japanese has three terms for sword, "tsurugi" or "ken" referring to straight double edged swords in general, "katana" meaning single edged sword in general, and "tachi", japanese single edged curved swords (like the wakizashi, uchigatana and odachi). The "budget" version you're referring to were the uchigatana made in the Kamukura period, when the main style of combat was using a odachi, a long single edge sword, on horseback. construction quality increased with time, with the odachi falling out of style in favor of the naginata (polearm) on horseback and the uchigatana for combat on foot

I had the feeling that the meteor iron one was fairly weird for a katana and after taking a look at it's point in game I belive it's more of a Dao than a japanese blade. The combination of the handle shape and construction plus a less defined angle in the point kinda point that out to me

The Uchigatana was a budget sword because back at the Muromachi period, they were made only for Ashigaru, aka commom foot soldiers, who couldn't afford a quality sword like a Tachi. Later they decided to make Uchigatana for Samurai and above. These were good quality, and expensive. But they were still Uchigatana, nonetheless.

Curious about the Nagakiba. How does a small grip area provide less leverage? and does that mean the Nagakiba is less effective than a traditional nodachi/odachi?
@Tay-v6v2 жыл бұрын
Physics XD. I think it is related to the equation moment = F x d. The further the distance from the pivot, the greater the moment. The pivot could be your hand near the guard when you maneuver the blade, and also the center of percussion when you strike the target Or, if you ever go fishing, try lifting up the rod with your hands together versus your hands being spaced out. Heavier cutters generally have long handles because leverage is important to control the blade and also generate more powerful cuts. However, a smaller handle means that the blade can pivot about better in one hand. But don't worry about it too much. "traditional odachis" is an umbrella term with surviving specimens having very different handling characteristics and different handle lengths, and if the tarnished is strong enough to lift a slab of iron in one hand, he has enough strength to wield the nagakiba effectively.
@SmittyWerbenjagermandragon2 жыл бұрын
the Nagakiba went by the Washing Pole in older souls games, refering to the Nodachi used by Sasaki Kojiro named the Drying Pole or the Laundry Pole. it is said that his strokes with the weapon were unusually quick and precise for how long and heavy it was. I'd say that From Software wanted to emulate Kojiro's slick use of his weapon, but making a Nodachi and slapping the Curved Greatsword moveset on it wouldn't work, so it got the katana moveset.

Katanas aren't generally hard. Their spine is usually soft (due to blast furnaces not being widely used in feudal japan.) and only the edge is hardened. There is some argument about the edge being quenched to be even more brittle than European swords (so it holds an edge better, but chip faster) but I've never found anyone measure that so I'll assume it's just a myth.
@MrJinglejanglejingle2 жыл бұрын
Its not actually a myth. Japanese Katanas, the old ones, the traditionally made ones, have a tendency to chip FAR easier than European blades. Now, does this mean they chip after a few swings? No, of course not. But after a few hundred smacks against shields and armor, it might start to form a chip somewhere. Unlike European blades, which generally held their edges for... Years, honestly. Then again, just like the European Longsword, the Katana was never meant to be a true battlefield weapon. Its a backup weapon for if you lose your first weapon. That usually being a Mace/Club or Spear/Yari. Because the Spear is the most broken battlefield weapon during the age of melee combat, and the mace/club is meant for cracking armor, which swords just... Weren't designed to do.
@emmanueldy91302 жыл бұрын
@@MrJinglejanglejingle I would like to add that with where Japan is located metal armor wasn't widely used, so they didn't need to create weapons capable of withstanding iron or steel defenses

@Tay-v6v2 жыл бұрын
@@MrJinglejanglejingle "Unlike European blades, which generally held their edges for... Years, honestly." False. European blades made with superior modern steel can dent and chip in relatively short stress testing, like any normal weapon outside of folklore. (laws of reality apply indiscriminately) In fact, while more resistant to chipping softer steel is more likely to roll and dent than harder steel.
@emmanueldy91302 жыл бұрын
@@Tay-v6v Oh I didn't know that, thanks for the correction. What I meant by withstanding is basically they didn't need to worry about full plate armor, so their swords were more used for slicing and cutting. Hope this clears it up

Screw Rivers of Blood, and screw Moonveil. I parry them a lot, but screw those two weapons, way to common and they are way to powerful, especially Rivers of Blood with decent arcane, if a player runs up behind you even if you have good poise while you are in a fight with someone else or if they are fast enough you are basically dead, same with Moonveil. Moonveil has stupidly good stagger and melts my high health, and Rivers of Blood procs bleed to much with the percentage of damage it does combined with it's damage making it stupidly powerful. Also, most can't even use them well but still get carried, but when one with a little bit of a brain has it it's a death sentence to anyone.
