@@Celisar1 My goodness what a strange thing to say. Merkel got a PhD in physics & you think that is not excelling. Indeed Thatcher was amazing, she had a first class brain in both science & law, but that does not mean Merkel is not also exceedingly bright. Plus Merkel had 16 years as chancellor & no one pushed her out. She went of her own accord due to the debacle of 2015 immigration. She was graceful in her wrong decision. I personally like & admire both women.

"I reckon I'm too old." No, Lady Thatcher, you were still young enough to remain the Prime Minister of the UK back in the mid 90s. You should have retained your career for at least another decade. While I realize that everything comes to an end eventually, I wanted you to be the leader till the very last moment of your life. May God give you another chance to be the Iron Lady with her dedication to her people. I really miss you.

Sadly, the "conservative" politicians we have in the US, in the legislative and executive branches have no notions of principles-they turn with the wind and ignore the virtues of decency and honor. Margaret Thatcher gives hope that in America someone like her will emerge in the US and restore it's position as the leader of the Free World and as a beacon of decency, hard work and honor.

@roisingrant
@roisingrant 10 ай бұрын
@@gailcrook2687 Agreed, she did wonders for people who would previously never have afforded to become homeowners. She reduced income tax too. Not only that, but in several industries she encouraged employees shareholding in the company they worked for, giving employees of specific companies far more of a say on their own pay and conditions than the centralised national-scale Unions did. Private ownership stimulated the economy vastly, leaving more disposable income as Brits no longer faced steep Union charges and rent payments, and even profited when their company's shares were on the rise - it's just that the British people had to pay for their 1945-1979 socialistic errors until around 1985/86. This happened through cutbacks on the largely unprofitable coal industry; the strikes for which were led by a self-professed Marxist. Thatcher left 15 coal fields open, which could provide enough coal for Britain to remain self-reliant on the fossil fuel, and ensured there would be no import duties to pay and no excess coal that had become too expensive to export. Jobs were lost, but jobs were found again. It meant a career change for many as Thatcher saw a progressive way forward through Conservative values. When Thatcher left office, the capitalist structure had been repaired in full, the economy was booming, and Brits didn't know how good they had it. As far as the Iron Lady was concerned, her work was done, and she had hoped that Major would've been considerate of her efforts and continued to uphold these values. Instead, he caused chaos and undid many of her efforts - including selling off the 15 remaining coal fields, leaving Britain dependent on European imports. The Conservatives have been letdown after letdown ever since. David Cameron was passable, and I suppose I liked some of Theresa May's policies (for a "modern" Conservative, that is) but she hadn't the gall that Maggie had.

@@johnjames6620 I admired her dedication to her job, and it’s clear to me that she wanted the best for Britain. However, there will always be people who need help and in one of the wealthiest nations on earth, there’s really no reason for anyone to live like a 16th century peasant. Yes, people need to work to better themselves and strive to be productive, contributing members to society, but that’s easier said than done. There are numerous reasons why someone may rely on benefits. Mental illness is a big contributing factor. The world isn’t fair, nor is it black/white. I agree that there should be strict rules regarding welfare, but not so strict that those who truly need it end up suffering. Thatcher also failed to understand that Britain’s days of global hegemony were long over and that Britan’s importance on the world stage was diminished. It’s like some Italian politician trying to convince citizens that Italy can regain the glory of the Roman Empire. A lot of promises, a lot of feel good speech, but was Britain objectively better when she left? That’s debatable. Still, an incredible woman through and through.
@johnjames6620
@johnjames6620 Жыл бұрын
@@JustinLHopkins I think she would have agreed that there will always be people that need help. Maybe, her approach was to help them to help themselves rather than just endless handouts. I think Britian was probably a lot better off after she left, not least of all because many middle-class families then had equity in their homes, which thereafter became quite substantial with the rise in property prices. What improvements were thereafter done by Blair and the Tories? I don't think much, if any, and sadly, like the USA, Canada, Australia and many parts of Europe, the UK is now increasingly going downhill.
@JustinLHopkins

@@johnjames6620 I have to agree with your general opinion, and I certainly think she was a charismatic and effective leader. One classy lady too. I suppose it just depends on your perspective and what you consider to be improvement. I don’t think the western world is going downhill, I think it’s simply changing. The world is becoming increasingly complex and with that comes immense and rapid change. It’s hard to keep up. Of course the west won’t always be dominant as all power fades, but I don’t think it will be any time soon. What is your opinion on the whole Liz Truss fiasco and are you supportive of Sunak?

@@JustinLHopkins I am not British, although my 2 daughters live in the UK. Liz Truss appeared wishy-washy and it seems that Sunak was elected by default. The West is definitely going down in my view. To those attacking Theresa May. May has taken strong action against Russian state aggression and against the Assad regime in Syria. In 1995, Yeltsin was in Russia. When Thatcher was in, it was the reformist Gorbachev. Neither Major or Thatcher had to deal with Putin and I think May acted strongly when she expelled Russians.

The problem is not so much Putin but inept Western leaders. Its amazing that people see Putin's aggression in Ukraine as negative but don't see the same when its the USA that's aggressive. USA had a problem with the Cuba missile crisis but then expects Russia to not be fazed when USA is interfering in a country on its border. Sadly, the USA and Canada and Australia and to some extent the UK and others are a disgrace!

I lived in London during Thatcher's leadership years. The level of discontent with her towards the end of her premiership was palpable. To me, it will always ultimately be a failed leadership. In any case, let's forget the past... we have simply continued to go towards a corporatocracy rather than a democracy, partly with Thatcher's involvement. She certainly played her role in that (sinister and hidden) shift, which is continuing to slowly unfold. Western nations are now ruled by _private corporations_ masquerading as legitimate governments. If we need smaller governments, and I'm not saying we don't, which civic-minded politician will responsibly now please put up their hand to identify themselves as superfluous?
@Hannodb1961

For what its worth. At least when it comes to corporations, you have some degree of competition to regulate the market. Governments are monopolies, so that encourages poor service, bloated budgets and corruption, with no recourse. Even worse when you have a first past the post electoral system that basically reduces your realistic choices to two, and then even worse when there is no real difference between the two candidates.
