He strives to develop a movement of men who respect and honour women with the aim of changing the culture that validates violence against women.

Right off the bat, if that opening joke is "awkward" and "shocking" doesn't that mean we live in a culture where women are respected?

It's shocking because it's unspoken truth, not because it's uncommon due to respect to women. Quite the opposite: something that's "in the air" but not talked about as much as it should've. The purpose of Buller's speech, or one of the purposes, is to convey the importance of speaking up (ex. his aunt wasn't sent back because she spoke up and said the most painful truth).
