Trina Nishimura is the only true Mari in the dub. Deneen Melody's quite alright, she's good but doesn't really match Mari's energy. Trina was much more powerful.

She is already bonkers, the problem child ^^ Giving her BBC or the Queen's English would make into a parody more than it already is, even Eaton school English or some working class accent would really create to much of a tonal shift imo. Kk, hideko Anno already mindfucks his deranged Japanese Fans, but even he has his self imposed limits to not totally drive his otakus insane. Gainax gets already enough death threats from this part of the fandom ^^

I don't understand why they re-casted Mari for this movie. Her VA in the Funimation dub voiced Makise Kurisu in Steins;Gate and Meiling Li in Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card. I wish they kept the original dub voice actress.

I like Deneen Melody's take on Mari just from these clips, but I still don't think she holds a candle to Trina Nishimura. Also not sure about NERV Doggy, especially since Puppy works just fine. (Nervling in the Funi 2.22 dub works as well.)

Deneen and Trina were both perfect for Mari...even if Khara's helicopter parenting over the dubbing hindered what Deneen had to work with.

Trina was so good, it would be impossible for Deneen to match it, despite her talent. Amazon's direction and Studio Khara's script crippled Deneen's chances of standing equal to Trina. That's really sad. Her voice is great for Mari, but clearly it wasn't in favor. Mixing was bad on Amazon's dub, direction was bad, script was gross. This is why localization exists, when people actually care about delivering a good product and performance, you get the wonderful funimation interpretations. I've been a Mari fan since day 1, and I'm sad to see a lack of care in creating an Americanized variant.

They probably kept Gendo's because he also voiced the character in the ADV dubs of the director's cut episodes and Manga Entertainment's EoE They definitely seemed to be trying to appeal to fans of the old dub considering that and the return of Rei's og english voice

Khara, the company that owns Evangelion is extremely strict and specific about their vision of dubs in the franchise, they apparently disliked ADV’s Dub of the show and I guess Funimation’s dub of the first three Rebuild films weren’t up to their satisfaction. So they completely redubbed the show and every movie with new English dubs to match their vision and wrote the scripts in the new dubs and subtitle translations. That’s pretty much the gist of why most Evangelion anime content we have has more than one English track

Deneen Melody (one of my favorite VAs) has seriously done a wonderful job as Mari! Seeing that she's been a fan of Evangelion shows how much she cares about Mari, and how she says Mari is her most favorite character!

Putting aside everything about the two dubs themselves...I'm really not sure why any changes were made to Mari's english-language dialogue in the dubs? Most of the time it's fine to change it because the original lines were stilted and clearly not written by someone with a strong grasp of English. But the lines Sakamoto delivers sound perfectly coherent from a scripting perspecting.

Came here because I just watched the Rebuild Movies on Amazon, and was extremely bothered by the sudden dub difference that I was not expecting. (Besides Shinji calling Rei "Ayanami" constantly throughout all of them.) Mari seems dulled and a little more- sassy? But not in a good way, like I would feel kinda degraded any time I was around her. The Original Dub Mari was Best Girl. "Point Blank, Shithead!" and speaking french while ramming the Eiffel tower into another Eva were amazing. Not to mention her intensity upon using the Beast state in Unit 02. Really bothered by the change, especially in 3.0+1.0.

Controversial opinion, but I think Deneen Melody's take on her is way better. Her lines sound way better, and well actually make her seem more playful than with the lines Trina Nishimura had, and more in tune with Maaya Sakamoto's lines. Nervling or Nervie sounds a bit weird, at least it was Nerv doggy at this time around. Also the voice's volume is louder this time around for this scene. And there's one part of the dub in this video that I found weird with "Your smell, I said I like it. But, let's pretend I wasn't here" if she meant to say that as if to make it so that he pretended he didn't meet her and didn't have any relations to her, she still goes to the same workplace and knows that he's from NERV. And the two parts of the line don't really connect well together logically, though they do kind of connect. "Makes you......pretty interesting, right" actually sounds more coherent. Well, also a very tiny bit because she kindly tells them to take it to the euro branch too, and not angrily saying it isn't her problem. This is just my personal opinion and probably this part is also just my personal taste too, but it also makes her seem like she's too focused on the fun stuff in her life to get angry at someone for just doing their job. And Deneen Melody's lines also are a bit more faithful to Maaya Sakamoto's lines, while still taking a really really hella good stand on its own, like JoJo level kind of posturing, T-posing stuff while doing that michael jackson kind of leaning forward, stuff. In conclusion, I think both voice actors are really good, but Deneen Melody has a way better portrayal in my opinion. I mean, Cowboy Beepshit and the exploited workers aside, the work Amazon has been doing with their shows is amazing with like Invincible, The Boys, etc. And this is just another really good choice of theirs on my opinion too, besides the mistreatment of workers, and the delivery service outsourcing shit and the killings from that, etc.

Yeah, wanna know why the Funimation dubs were as good as they were? It’s because they altered the script a little bit so that the dialogue made more sense. Now i can barely understand what the fuck most of these characters are saying so thanks amazon you managed to be just as Netflix when dubbing this series. Ok thats too mean, the Amazon dubs aren’t AS bad the Netflix’s dub and i know this is more Studio Khara’s fault but still.
