I was fortunate to have seen Callas on the last tour at the Lyric Opera in Chicago. It was an incredible experience. The voice, as she states, was not what it had been but her skillful use of it was just as great as it had been so the presentation of character through the voice was still extraordinary. What was also beyond expectation was how she used her body position, hand and head movements, and facial expressiveness to create the different characters she was singing. She became those characters without costume or makeup or staging. One could only imagine what experiencing her in a fully staged opera in her prime.

No matter how much Wallace tried to throw her off balance, as he always does, she was cool as a cucumber. And smart as a whip.

Callas should have run the Met. Bing should have listened to her demands because I bet they were all reasonable. Nobody cared about him. He was easily replaceable but she was one of a kind. Denying New Yorkers that talent that is one in a century should have been a crime and he should have been the one fired.

Indeed, and other journalists treated her the same way. There's an awful interview with Barbara Walters from the same year.

I heard an interview when she said she was putting a poker face and that sound wierd for her to say but she seem to be doing it here. You could see she is triggered by the personal questions as she should, but her strength of character allows her to make herself seem cool.

It is amazing watching the interviews these modern times how misogynistic they sound… instead of celebrating this true genius, incomparable , divine voice - they gossip ab her private affairs…

Gracias ❤❤❤

Wallace shows no grace, no kindness, no real journalistic prowess :… he was a provocateur and a not very skillful one - Maria, on the other hand, exhibited restraint, graciousness and a kind of intellectual grit that was admirable

Would a good business woman charge an exorbitant price, in excess of what is reasonable; excessive; extravagant; immoderate? Walking away from the table with nothing for gain? What if, for her own reasons, maybe even a rude Mike Wallace or station executive? Say no, and they beg, plead cajole, pry and twist at you, like vultures at dying, almost dead carrion. Incite a price above the stars in the sky? They walk away, shaking their heads at what might gave been.

Zefirelli was so right :No one acts better than she does. And I strongly believe that when Callas was on stage (and I never saw her on stage) Callas was "out of this world". Bear in mind she didn't see very clearly She was shortsighted.. Only the Music led her. It must have been an almost religious experience indeed.

Challenging questions as it was normal at the time (nowadays interviewer are all a**licker). Callas is so cool and kind but she is also getting away without questions on the tour which notoriously showcased the harsh decline of her voice.
