Hi there, I really enjoyed watching your video. I just wanted to tell you and others watching this that lichens take a very long time to grow. For that reason it is good practice to never take lichen of the rocks or trees directly. Please only use lichens that have fallen on the ground and are no longer attached to rocks or trees. Even if the lichens seem to be very abundant!

Yes, this is important! The book I was using at the time did not mention this, but I have since then learned more about it and I am more mindful of that. Will pin your comment so others can see it :-)

I love finding these channels where people are experimenting with natural dye. I just started doing it and had some success with black bean water, and then my second black bean water didn’t go so well. So with a bunch of leftover gel food coloring I had from my years as a pastry chef I decided to jump on that bandwagon. I do enjoy doing it and hope I can find some lovely people who would like to knit with the yarn. Thank you for sharing your insights and I hope to get back to using more natural materials in the future.

We learned to plantcolour yarn at school in Norway. In highschool. We learned to weave, draw, paint and ceramics, also. And we learned to make metallic jewlery and some smal things from wood. To knit we learned in childschool. And we learned to saw and embroidery in childschool. All the Girls in clas made themself a miniskirt. Guess the children in other countries learned such things at school, too
@Mariaandtheforest3 жыл бұрын
thats very nice! I personally learned some of that in school in Norway too, but it was because I went to Waldorf school. My siblings do not learn these things in school that much, except for the knitting.

I spent one semester in school in Norway and knit a pair of mitts and made a skirt. I grew up in Jamaica and when I was about 7 or 8 stitched a few things with cross-stitch, but nothing else. And they did offer art. I am in Canada now and I think they do some woodworking in some schools, not sure what else. You are very fortunate to have learned things in school in Norway! All of those things give you a chance to try various arts and crafts and definitely enrich your life I think.

So impressed with the colors you were able to get! Thank you for this. Also, if you put your plant materials into a mesh bag before putting them in the water, you won't have to pick the plant pieces out of the yarn afterward. You could also pour the dye through a strainer and back into the pot before putting the yarn in the dye bath. For the lichen where you want direct contact by layering the lichen, you could put your yarn in the fine nylon mesh bag that won't interfere with the yarn taking the color.

Maria, as ever you teach me something new in every video ! It was lovely to meet one of your sisters too in this video, along with a brief glimse of one of your brothers. You seem to have plenty of siblings willing to lend a helping hand, and they are so fortunate to have an elder sister from whom to learn such interesting skills.

I'm so glad to hear that Mark. Thank you. yes, I am lucky to have 4 younger siblings. They are all very important to me, and I am very happy to be spending some time with them. Glad they have grown to be sort of interested in what I do, so I can persuade them into helping me out once in a while 😉

This was such a fascinating episode. I would love to try to dye yarn. You must be a very patient person. I love that you are passing down the wisdom of our grandmothers on KZbin! I’m very excited for my daughter. She’s moving from Minnesota to Tromsø to start a masters program in indigenous studies. I’m hoping that she will learn some of the old ways and wisdom before it completely disappears. Thank you! ❤️

Hi Julianna sorry about my late reply, this comment got lost in the system. I am so glad you liked the video. I am actually not so patient haha, but somehow I manage when I find something interesting. How cool your daughter is moving to Tromsø, and what an interesting subject, I have to check that program out. I really hope she will like it there

How awesome with the yarn dyeing! As I've mentioned I'm a paper crafter, and we like to come up with different ways to dye or stain paper, so your coloring process was extra interesting. Most paper crafters use tea or coffe to make the papers look really old. Avocado peels is also often used, gives a pink color. I believe turmeric (gurkemeie) would give a strong yellow color. I was LOL when the axe sceen appeared, haha ha! Ha en härlig uke! /Ditte

Hi Ditte! We are thinking alike here. Part of why I do this is to figure out if I can do it with paper as well! If I get around to it and it works I will make a video about it, now I know it might interest at least one of my followers haha. Avocado peel would be nice to try out, I have seen it can give beautiful colours.

Ole.

Very interesting. I wonder if the color is fixed or not after washing. I love those natural colors . It's different than all we can find in clothes stores. 👍🧡
@Mariaandtheforest2 жыл бұрын
I am glad you think so :-). The colour lasts pretty long, even after washing. But sun can eventually make it fade.

Did you test the lichen for ammonia reactivity before using? If it was an ammonia reactive lichen you might have gotten much stronger reds or purples. Also, there are ethical issues to address with lichen collection, since many are very slow growing. Usually it’s ok to collect 10% of the lichens of a particular species from the rock or wood, but many natural dyers use only lichens that have naturally become detached from their substrate.
@Mariaandtheforest10 ай бұрын
No I did not do that, maybe I need to try it next time. I have learned much more since then and now I do not forage lichen unless it has become detached like you say!
@moinalykke83973 жыл бұрын
Kan det være at du bare bruker blomstene til reinfann? Bjørkeblader gir visst alt fra gul til grønt igjennom sesongen og gult og grønt er de enkleste fargene å få til av det vi har tilgang på 😅
@Mariaandtheforest3 жыл бұрын

@Mariaandtheforest3 жыл бұрын
your concern is valid, I did not use mordant, so the colours might fade. However both the lichen and the rhubarb leaves contain their own mordant, and therefore you can do this the same way as me and most likely have a long lasting result :-)

Maria, you have learnt arts and literature... my suggestion is: KEEP WRITTEN RECORDS - pencil and paper. When you retire at night, sit down at your table, and: 1. Keep a general "Daily Diary"; 2. keep different books with all the proceedings you use to "produce" your "items" - this is very important, in order to re-produce your "items". These records must be as precise as possible. The more precise, the better; 3. keep a book for the money - what gets out, and what comes in. Go to bed early at night! "Early to bed, and early to rise, makes a girl healthy and wealthy and wise." (Benjamin Franklin) P.S. Do some little social life. But beware of alcohol! Drink plain water!
