Mariah Carey - Everything Fades Away (REACTION) 💞

Everything Fades Away didn't make the cut for the American Musicbox release, but it DID make the international versions in Europe, Asia and Australia etc. Why? Because Tommy Mottola (Mariah's husband and record label president at the time) thought the lyrics hit too close to home and didn't want the media to catch wind of there being any trouble in paradise. This was back when there was no internet and celebrity gossip didn't really travel across borders. The official excuse was that it was too r'n'b (!) just like Slipping Away, another song with the same theme, which also didn't make the Daydream album and only got released as a B-side to Always Be My Baby. That happened to a lot of Mariah's best songs in the mid-late 90's - sabotage by her own husband and the record label he was the president of. In 2000, Mariah finally had enough and went directly to the Japanese heads of SONY. She and her legal team renegotiated her contract and was released early from said contract even as she still owed them 1 album. She subsequently signed the BIGGEST recording contract EVER, with Virgin Records (her friend Janet Jackson's label at the time), with 100M. But Tommy still found ways to make Mariah's career a living hell by continuing to steal her musical ideas and intellectual property (for the Glitter soundtrack, just like he did #1's) and giving them to JLo*. It would only end in late 2002 when Mottola was fired unceremoniously for abuse of power over lucrative and successful Sony artists like Mariah, Michael Jackson and George Michael who all suffered under his reign. *That's the basic origin of "I Don't Know Her". OAN, You won't find EFA or Slipping Away on Spotify, even in Europe!

This is my era, so I'm showing my age. I bought a 45 single for a record player. Everything fades away was the b side of the single.I wore it out and it is one of my top five Mariah Carey songs of all times and it was crazy that it was never released. That along with Slipping Away and Melt Away. It's a shame because I think it would have given her 3 more number ones.

Man, these 90’s recordings have a certain sound that I really, really miss. Music Box was her fourth album (Mariah Carey, Emotions, MTV Unplugged, and then Music Box) Those are all early 90’s, and since I know you’re a fan of, and really appreciate production, I think you’d like to listen to those first 4 albums. The sound is so live and so raw. Nooooo auto tune. And, btw, I really like your videos. I’m know you say you don’t know a lot about vocals and singing. The reason why Mariah blends really well with her background singers is because she once was one herself, for then pop star Brenda K. Starr in the 80s, who happened to hand in Mariah's mixtape to the head of her label, Tommy Mottola. A few years later, Mariah would explode into the scene, Brenda's career unfortunately faded, Mariah would go on to marry Tommy (and divorce later on) and the rest is history. Mariah treats her background singers like family. One of them, Trey Lorenz, who she sang a #1 cover of I'll Be There by The Jackson 5, still works with Mariah to this day. Mariah also paid tribute to Brenda by covering her song I Still Believe. Looking forward to you reacting to those 2 covers as well.

In the US this song was on the B-side of the "Hero" single released in November 1993. I always remember it as the time after my mom died. I still have the single. Didn't help spirits much at that time. I consider it a favorite too, one of those rare ones. Music Box was better than Emotions in my opinion.

Always good watching your reactions. Like to see people putting respect on her name. I'm going to suggest again from her new stuff Runway. I think you might also like Whenever you call (solo version), and honestly some of her best vocals are on tracks that aren't even full songs. She does preludes and interludes on a lot of her albums and these are like mini tracks to introduce a song or change the tone of an album Midway through and they are basically all chorus and her layering over herself and some of them have some amazing vocals.
