It didn't storm the scene when it came out the song didn't do much they thought her vocals were fake her team had to promote the song to get it heard ... It was total B's the crap she went through when she came out she had to prove herself her talent to the world hence why she did the live unplugged album with an actual audience. Thinking her vocals were computerized edited tampered with .. well didn't she prove em all wrong 🤣

@@feliciasanders2066 Yet it ended up the first time a female artist reached number one on the charts and Whitney who stared her career year prior came just after her. Just because there were other prominent people doesn't mean she didn't make a huge impact. She mixed multiple genres of music in one and popularized the use of mellisma in the mainstreaming. She ended up popularizing and influencing pop/hiphop collabs with a formula we still see today just a few years later. She's literally untouchable.

@@codywalsh2075 I totally love this song, some of her later tracks, much like Celine Dion, can end up up feeling like it is all about “here’s my range and what it can do” and goes into “show-off” mode. I remember the first time I ever heard Mariah Carey singing, "Vision of Love". It was June of 1990. I was listening to the radio. The DJ announced her as a new singer. I listened and was really digging the song. Her voice kept progressing as the song kept building to that ultimate climax where she hit that amazing high note. When I heard that note, I stopped in my tracks and was absolutely dumbfounded. Had never heard anyone sing like that. I got chills and I'll never forget thinking that I had waited my whole life to hear her voice! She blew me away. I became an instant fan and now 31 years later, I am still loving her. How could anyone have known back in 1990 that Mariah would end up having one of the most successful singing careers of anyone in history? There's not a week that goes by that I don't listen to something from Mariah. She truly has been the most impactful singer of my life. Love her music. So incredibly talented.

Her first single was a song in a 6/8 Time Signature, something she apparently loves, as she has done many songs in it since. A lot of my favorite songs are in 6/8 and this is certainly one of them. She came into the music business with vocals never imagined before and made clear that she's building on a tradition of SOUL and R&B first & foremost. A true Vocalist debut, a true songwriting debut and one that made clear this one was to be a Legend.

I remember watching her perform this song on The Arsenio Hall Show! His show was known for the epic live performances! Mariah didn't disappoint! Great reaction guys!! Take care.🙂

I watched those performances on Arsenio also. She actually sang VOL on his show twice. The first time was her TV debut, if I remember correctly and she didn't sing the high note. A few months later she opened the show with VOL and closed the show with, "Love Takes Time". Her first time on the show, she was a bit nervous. Her second appearance was FIRE! She sang the hell out of both of those songs. I still watch those performances on KZbin occasionally.

I loved her autobiography. She is so deep and has had a very hard go of things. I remember when this came out and I was like whaaaaaaaa? She is so off the charts. As a person, she is an incredible survivor. Much respect.

One of my favorite Mariah Carey songs was "The Wind." Before that, I had no idea that Mariah had any jazz sensibilities. However, for a debut song, you must hear Whitney Houston's "Thinking About You" (no video) or "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do" 1985 Live duet with brother, Gary Houston. They are definitive of the the songstress's vocal flexibility.
