It's because Mariah never wanted to work with Narada Michael Walden in the first place. Tommy Mottola phoned Walden personally to request that he produce a hit song with Mariah for her debut album. Mariah was apprehensive and feared that her music would become "too schmaltzy" like his work with Whitney Houston. For IDWC, while recording, Mariah sought to redo "licks" multiple times during the process, and Walden agreed. After she recorded more vocals, Walden refused to incorporate them because he felt the song was complete. Tommy Mottola encouraged Mariah to follow his advice but acknowledged her discontent. Mariah never collaborated with Walden again, later stating, "The label was very excited for me to work with him because of his collaborations with hugely successful vocalists...it was very important for me to keep my identity as a songwriter." The point is Mariah was never happy with the final album version of IDWC because the finished product is not what she wanted it to sound like which is why she wanted to add some additional vocals after the initial recording process. She didn't want to work with Walden but again, Columbia Records President Don Ienner and Tommy Mottola strongly suggested it and after all it was just her debut album. So she really didn't have much choice on the matter. I think she got more freedom on the sophomore album because of the success of the debut. This time she worked more with Afanasieff (because of his work on Love Takes Time) and for the uptempos she chose Clivillés and Cole.
