Mariah set the vocal bar so high that only the most confident, skillful backup singers in the business could work with her. (Imagine the pressure of singing backup to one of the most dynamic voices in the history of pop.) And she must be a lot of fun to work with because many of them have worked with her for many years.

Fun fact - the audience was instructed not to clap or stand during this whole performance but this song in particular. They were recording it live to release as a single. At the beginning you can hear the audience start to snap their fingers, then it just stops lol. At the end you see a few people stand up to clap anyway in clear defiance, and a wave of people followed. She was too spectacular to stay quiet. You have to watch this entire performance, its only about 6 songs and they're all amazing. Curly hair Mariah is my fav too!

She still has those same background singers. You can see Trey Lorenz in her living room performances. Mariah has always been very supportive of her background singers (which why she still has alot of the same ones still to this day, almost 30 years). Shortly after this performance, Trey Lorenz was offered a record deal, and Mariah helped co-write, and co-produce, and add backup vocals to some songs on the album.

Trey Lorenz was one of her first back-up singers during promotion for her first album! I don't think he was always on tour with her (for awhile she just had the three ladies) but they remained close and had a lot of fun together. Now he's back on her touring team and they still do this song together during shows - and he even steps in for the Boys II Men parts when Mariah sings One Sweet Day.
@luisalmeida534 жыл бұрын
There's no studio version for this song. They decided to do this cover for the show. It went #1. Trey, her background singer, is a special guest on this song. He's got a #1! 😉 On the performance of this song in MSG, she had Wanya Morris, from Boyz II Men, do Trey's part and it was amazing! Put Triumphant on your list ! Stay safe! Love and peace from Brazil! 🇧🇷

Yeah, Mariah had to jump through so many hoops just to prove herself. Not only did she have to do this to silence the critics but also do a cover song to further prove its live and unplugged. Which worked out to her advantage because she became the only Artist to have a Jackson 5 song cover go Number 1, which was never officially released as a single, and was live. But due to high demand at radio by fans the song took on a life of its own. This performance is one of many where you can clearly see when Mariah shines most is when the audience is giving her that love and energy she needs to pull through. 🙏 Check out the Sweetheart music video next. Its a whole mood. 🌻💜

Glad you enjoyed this performance, Jack. She brought justice to a wonderful Jackson 5 hit and you should definitely take a listen to the original sometime. I should be working right now but I'm too busy watching your videos. :) I know you are going back to do regular music videos but an idea for the next time you do one of Mariah's live performances - there is one titled "Vision Of Love live at Paris, CB Tour - 04.11.03". This was from her Charmbracelet Tour, which was from 2003-2004. For me, personally, this is my favorite period of her career as there was a maturity to her voice, it was full, rounded, and supported, and she was practically perfect in every register. The version that I am listing has no video to it, should you want to react to an audio-only experience. Otherwise, there is a video of it but a fan mashed up several live performances from that tour to present something for the video. Either one would be fine to react to but I am listing it as my request. We all see Mariah's live performances on TV shows but the fan footage from her concerts is what is truly golden. She has strength, clarity, and agility in this performance and I would love to know what you think, aside from being a vocal beast...lol. I'm pushing an obscure clip like this because more people need to hear this type of content from Mariah to truly appreciate & understand why she is the legend that she is. Peace!
