I will admit to being a hair nervous upon your announcement, but as soon as you got to work, you started doing the EXACT thing I love about all your videos and that, in my mind at least, sets you apart in such a wonderful way. You break down patterns, step by step, like nobody else. You are never just "I changed this shape (and probably off camera)," you are "I changed this shape for this purpose, here's the original shape, here's where and how I changed it and WHY. Here's why it did or didn't work." NOBODY else is that thorough. Least not anyone I've found. I just want to say, THANK YOU for being such a great TEACHER. Doesn't matter what you are making, just don't stop the breakdowns. It was only after watching you that I got brave enough to try alterations. I'm very excited to follow this along with your regular clothing videos. Thank you, THANK YOU, for sharing your attention to detail.

Yes, and she's the reason I was able to even attempt the pattern for the stays I'm making! I'm about to iron my fabric and cut it out to do the first fitting with the actual material instead of cardboard, and I wouldn't have gotten this far without the thorough way she breaks all of these projects down into the "how" and "why" at every step ❤️

This was the first historical gown that I ever tried making at age 16. I remember doing hand embroidery in typing class in high school! My mom helped a lot also. I still have the dress although the metallic silk is looking worse for wear without proper storage and cleaning. It's still one of my favorite movie dresses ever.

A) I love that you're doing the Just Breathe dress. Classic. Should be beautiful. B) As someone with a similar sewing journey - started sewing costumes, but have transitioned into sewing for wardrobe over the past few years partially due to inspiration from your channel and others, but want to get back into sewing costumes again - I love to see you're dealing with similar need to balance and trade off time. I'm looking forward to the inspiration to do the big movie inspired project over the coming months :)

oh wow I know what it is just from the title. So excited! Edit: have now watched the video. Having made an italian ren gown with similar sleeves and knowing people who have done similar we often cut those straps with the bias curving around the shoulders so they stay on better and stay up with you add the sleeves. Something to consider.

Side note, I really appreciate you showing a good closeup of the fabric you'll be using. It's so hard to learn about textiles from many costuber videos, cause for the most part you can usually only see the color and maybe the weight. This on the other hand gives me a very good idea of what fabric you're using even if I don't know all the fancy textile terms!

Now that I think about it I wonder how the 16th century dress this was based on worked. Corsetry and boning seems implausible for the turn of the 16th century (this movie's costumes are based on Venetian styles between c.1490 and c.1510, never mind that it's supposed to be French) and I have made a completely supportive underdress of this period with no more structure than 2 layers of linen but crucially it had straps that go straight up over the shoulders to help with that support. The sketch this dress is based on shows the straps right on the point of the shoulder and the engineering doesn't seem to make sense without boning. Boning just doesn't fit the historical evidence of Italy at this time, so I'm not sure if this sketch might have been a bit of artistic licence or maybe some fitting secret I don't understand. I know your goal is different because you're recreating a movie costume including the wings so it's not historically accurate but my brain went in a different direction to the historical original.
@Oscitant_Otter2 жыл бұрын
Agree that it doesn't suit the time period, and that the dress the way it looks in the film could probably be recreated pretty faithfully without a corset, but it is probably only there to be the harness for the wings.

Thank you for sharing all the changes you made to that corset pattern and why! I ended up doing the opposite for my sports bra half-corset project, I discovered the centre back piece and the piece next to it were both straight on-grain sides next to each other so they didn't need to be two pieces so I taped them together after removing the seam allowances. Perhaps I'll have to cut them apart again if I ever decide to make a full corset wtih thhis pattern, but maybe not. The whole reason I could combine pieces instead of having to make extra pieces like you did is that I'm way less curvy than you are, and there's not really a lot of shape at my centre lower back anyways so we'll see. Gotta finish the top half first. Getting there though, I've got the pieces drawn onto the fabric I want on the outside and I've ironed the fabric I'll use for the inside. I'll have to be brave and hit the fabric store for a zipper though, lacing is not something I want with daily wear and it's going centre front so I can technically cut both back pieces out of the same with just a small dart at the top centre and save more fabric... I also learned a little about boning while doing that 4th mockup, I did one side of the mockup as close to the original boning channels as I could, given all the changes I made to the pattern (it was designed for someone with a much larger bust to waist ratio), and on the other side I just sewed down the seam allowance between the panels and reversed the angle of one boneon a side panel, wondering if doing so would hold in the sideboob a little, and it did so I'm going with that plus a mix of original vs down the seams depending on which side looked better! Also, I go a huge spike of happy when you showed the dress you plan to recreate, I loved that scene so much!
@HikiibatoHada2 жыл бұрын
Great video! Having a longer running project is a great idea and the dress itself is such a good choice 🧚♀️ The fact that you have different standards for your everyday wear versus your costumes makes sense why it would be more all-or-nothing when it comes to how they are made. In this case compromise is not an option and it seemed to have lost the effects you wanted for both! Looking forward to how that perspective changes your approach from now on. :)

Oh my goodness, I hope some independent shop or shoemaker has THE shoes to complement the dress. Today (and tommorow) I am going to try and pattern Princess Buttercups orange-red dress. And one day I will save up and get the appropriate wool twill from a shop in Germany, the woven pattern is very close. But until then. I am going to make a just slightly more modernized version for my winter dresses. One in merlot wool (that I have) and one in near prussian blue wool (that I soon will) medium weight surge. Stabilizing the hem with flannel, as an experiment. Flatlining with standard cotton lining, because I have decided I am going to be lining everything now. Buttons up the front, instead of lacing up the back, inspired by Princess Grace of Monaco's wedding dress. Gorgeous and practical. Pockets. Because we all know they're there. Secretly being a skirt and blouse. Versatility. What else can I say. Taking some (but only some) of the volume out of the sleeves, I don't have enough fabric for those dirigibles in the original. And instead of those darts under the bosom, I am going to pull the front volume into slight blousing while lowering the bodice down into my natural waistline. It will be more flattering on me that way. Even better! My long thick flannel kirtle/jumper will fit just right underneath, for a winter petticoat. And with the way the caller is, I can wear my warm high neck blouses, letting the collar just peek out from underneath. I plan to do some decorative stitching on everything.

Did you make the dress that you're wearing in the intro? It so perfectly fits the 'gamine' dress designs you compiled and created for your 'analyzing my body type' video! I haven't watched more than just clips of Doctor who, but that outfit with hair and all looks like something Clara would wear. I love the neckline, it's almost sweetheart but with more straight geometric lines, those shorter sleeves you mentioned on Clara's altered collar dress, and perfect princess seams! It looks so ready to be worn with little short biker boots and a structured leather jacket.

@@MariahPattie Lucky! My former husband has that gene. Me, I sweat buckets. Once he and I were helping to prepare the land for a LARP - clearing brush, mowing, cleaning a cabin, that sort of stuff - on a very hot day in July. We had a bonfire to burn all the detritus and he was tending it. At one point I took him some water he turned and said, "Look dear, I'm glistening." and he had tiny beads of sweat on his forehead. Meanwhile I'm under the shelter sweating my boobies off. Ugh!
