Ok so here is the deal. He wrote the song in rehab in an exercise in which they had to write a love letter to their addiction to their drug of choice (heroin in Josh's case). That being said the beautiful thing about music that it can be interpreted differently for each person and it can be applied to one's life as fit. Addiction is a pretty universal feeling and so it is okay to say you connect to it even if you never smoked heroin.

"My tongues turning black, but I'll take you back. You're still the best, more or less, I guess" This is the part that hit me and made me realize this is low-key about drugs and self harm. This reminds me of cigarettes personally, and how it's easy to just go buy another pack, even though you're starting to realize its not the best thing, and there are better things out there. Anyone else?
@RileyKohler9 жыл бұрын
Yep. It's actually very high-key about drugs, since Josh wrote the lyrics originally as a love letter to his heroin addiction when he was in rehab as a teen. This can really hit home for anybody with any sort of addiction though, self harm in my case. Josh is really inspiring for me. And for countless other people too, of course. I'm really grateful he puts all of his experiences and his emotions out there to the world. It must be insanely hard to do, but it has helped so many, and I'm just so glad Josh overcame his issues and is still alive today.

this song speaks close to me... I couldn't figure out why, but now I realize that it resembles me and my self harm. that's the best part of marianas trench songs, everyone has their own meanings hidden in the songs, everybody can relate because the song reminds them of something in their life. this song is about josh's former heroin addiction, but I interpreted it to myself for my self harm

To just clear things up, this isn't a love song to a person, this is a love song, a parting song more importantly, to a drug. Nearing the end of his high school years, Ramsay developed an addiction to heroin. In previous years, he had struggled with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and depression. He had begun to self-harm at around the age of 13.[3] Due to his drug addiction, Ramsay was kicked out of his high school.[4] He entered rehab, where he wrote several songs, such as Lover Dearest (originally a letter about his addiction), and Say Anything. This is a song about letting go of an addiction, and the doubt and struggle that comes with moving on. The lingering regret, doubt, and confusion that will stay in the back of his mind long after he lets it go and the fine line he stands on, risking coming back to it.

what I love about this song is that it can have multiple meanings. I know why Josh wrote it and what it means to him, but the beautiful thing about art is that you can interpret it however you wish. To me, it represents that hole that's always looming at the back of my mind. I know it's not good for me, but I wish I could just crawl back into that hole. It would be so much easier than dealing with reality.

I think he's saying heroin was he's lover.
@bradleybrewer724910 жыл бұрын
Youre right. The lover is heroine. I'm an opiate addict that has been on painkillers since I was 13 for chronic pain from an entrapped nerve. I was abused sexually, physically, and psychologically as a kid, so the pills were that much more. This songs really deep for me. The best way to explain opiate addiction to an outsider is as an intimate lover. The feeling it gives you is comfort and safety from the pain of the world. Its love and acceptance. Its laying in the arms of your lover in a cool soft bed at the end of a long hot really bad day. She holds you and rubs your back. She runs her fingers through your hair. She kisses your forehead and tells you she loves you. That everything will be ok, and you trust her and believe her no matter how bad things really are. Quitting is breaking up with that lover when you know you need to, but you still don't want to lose her love. You never really get over her.
