Wow, I'd no idea Marianne Faithful covered this Lennon classic. It's perfect for her. Her voice is bittersweet, genuinely expressive of a tortured, ethereal soul. Rare, visceral, beautiful. The accompaniment compliments her voice and the song rather well. Hers easily compares to the original, perhaps even surpasses it.

An emotionally charged version that only Marianne could deliver - masterful; perhaps the only song that the ultimate cynic Lennon wrote that's worthwhile.

I guess I can see where you're coming from, though fwiw I think Lennon's very best work came out while solo. This is one of the very best during that period, one among many imo. Harrisson, too, by far, did his best work post-Beatles.

A somber record to begin with but, Faithful only deepens the mood in Britain's post war years. A depressing period for the working class of the land, a bleak landscape of poverty and a daily grind of futility. A Schopenhauerian philosophy put to music.

She left out the very last verse about "following" too, but changing you to _us_ ("they're telling you still), and to _we_ (re still being peasants) are the 2 small yet great lyrical changes she made to Lennon's original. @@jackd1582
