The humanity and genius of these two magnificent and loving souls is unmatched. I have never heard Dr. West share his extraordinary intellect so magnificently and take it to such heights. Only a genius and spiritual leader with such extraordinary presence like Ms. Williamson could cause that to be. I believe that you Marianne and Dr. Cornel have both given us a "Unified Field Theory" of spirituality and politics. Many times what you spoke brought tears to my eyes. As an Israeli-American transgender woman, I believe that you both carry the true heart of the Judeo-Christian message that the love of God is the love of ALL humanity. Sadly, in both countries the most visible and vocal religious groups do not see this at all. Thank you for such an encouraging talk!

As a fellow transgender woman I also value these voices greatly. I am, however an atheist. But I too believe their spiritual and political ideas are key to solving our cultural woes. Violence is to he abhorred, but it is likely. It is imminent. The power of the state comes with inherent violence and changing it does too.

And what form will that take - is the question? Where do we find this thinking and attitude, where it is most needed? Where is the coordinated effort to challenge the current culture and attitude, that seems either organically, if not instinctively able to keep itself entrenched, or is just much more effective at using the social and technological apparatuses, to perpetuate its culture? Where is the coordinated effort to foster the culture of liberalism? What are the social methods that instill it? The romanticizing of the resilience of the common people, have not brought much progress for those on the bottom rung of society. The comparison between Black people and Jewish people, may be instructive to use, if we were honest or open enough to delve into it. How both groups have responded historically to their oppression, is really not as easy to compare, because of the sensitivity and contentions, that exist within the historic relationship, between the two groups. But, for Black people, if we simply examine our similarities, in a very limited and specific area, it would help us realize that we may need to reconsider or question many assumptions we hold about our particular resilience, in face of our oppression. West often speaks about the power of the blues, and if not as a tool, an expression of Black resilience. Williamson spoke about comedy's role in Jewish life or culture. Comedy is also said to be an expression of Black resilience, but the comedy that the common Black people, employ among each other, often acts counter to this narrative that our intellectuals like to paint. Self deprecating humor is easy to do when you know you are better than what you make fun of. For Black people to rely so heavily on this kind of humor, is risky and has often proves dangerous. Many violent acts have followed the put-down joke aimed at a Black person by another Black person. I'm not sure who these neo-liberals are, who demand of Black people to ignore despair. Ironically Williamson used the term pathologize, which also Michael Eric Dyson, alludes to, when he speaks of Black people speaking out against us killing one another. He and others have said to talk of us killing one another "makes us look pathological". Dyson among other leading African-Americans, put this in the category of what they call "respectability politics". The application/ definition of which says, that when a Black person does something for the sole purpose of appeasing White people or the society in general, so as to receive less criticism or even harm. They wrongly apply this to calls by Black people for Black people to have regard for our lives. Who is worried about who here? Those of us who appeal to Black people to value our lives are concerned about our lives. We did this in the 70's when the late Congressmen from Md. Parren J. Mitchell coined the phrase 'Us Killing Us Equals Genocide' to try to curtail the high rate of violence in our communities, even back then. Hip-hop had a 'stop the violence' movement or campaign in the 80's. Dyson is like a self appointed spokesmen for H-H, but he and others of H-H, are outspoken in and in unison saying Black on Black crime "is not a thing" What is also bad is that everyone seems to act as if this 360 degree turnaround in attitude, has always been our stance on violence among us. It seems everyone is somehow worried about how it will look, if we acknowledge the disparate amount of violence in our communities, as if the perception of us acknowledging it, is somehow worst then the reality of it. This is true of any of the problems we have yet to rectify. There is a lot of rhetorical talk among Black people about our "allies". Kendi Ibram seems to demand all White or non-Black people to be proactive allies. For him it is not enough not to support racism or not be a racist. He says everyone must be actively working to end it. Significant numbers of other Black people, have joined him in this demand. How can they demand anything less of Black people ourselves to improve our own lives - our condition and position in society? How can we, out of one side of our mouths, proclaim to the world that our live matter, and on the other, be as indifferent to such widespread death among us by us? If I want any help from others, it would be for you, in private, to tell your Black friends and colleagues that this attitude is counter-productive to the well being of Black people, and the country as a whole. Many of us will say in public, that they resent your attempts to take charge, when you are apart of our organizations, surely you can take any response you might get in private. IMO, the best help we need at this time, is for a friend or ally to be honest with us - to not tell us what you might think we want to hear, but what you know we need to hear. Ai 41:41 Williamson said "one of the darkest elements of the neo-liberal establishment is pathologizing human despair". At 42:14 she said despair is psychic pain, and you must reset your thinking, behavior, and civilization". If the attitude that Black people killing one another is "not a thing" is not pathological, it is certainly a manifestation and a perpetuation of a state of despair. I share Williamson's view that to treat this pain, thinking and behavior has to change. Many areas of life in our society need this remedy. This area is as deserving of any, in applying this remedy. Lastly, as a kind of comprehensive solution, I suggest someone of the stature of these two or an organization, initiate on a national level, the suggestion of the people giving themselves a 'peace dividend' I will reply to my own post and present my thinking behind a 'domestic peace dividend'.
@siriuslyspeaking97203 жыл бұрын
As a presidential candidate, Andrew Yang has offered the concept of the 'Freedom Dividend'. I asked that all presidential candidates promote the concept of a 'Domestic Peace Dividend'. None responded. A 'Domestic Peace Dividend' is focused on cutting cost and changing the attitude and thinking of the people. It would reflect a change in the mindset of the American people, especially those living in urban and suburban areas. We know that Conservatives will demonize any new safety-net programs as Socialist. Liberals and Democrats don't seem to emphasize the concept of 'we're all in this together' which in essence, is basically what patriotism and socialism are. Conservatives/Republicans propagate this idea in the form of patriotism, but where is this taking place on the Liberal/Democrat side? President John F. Kennedy's statement about not asking of the country, but asking of yourself, was too one-sided, but sometimes people make extreme statements to make a point. Government is created to serve the people, and we are supposed to be the government. Liberals also need to emphasize personal responsibility and morality. There has to be balance. Someone with a high profile has to start talking about the cost of not only wars, but also the battle that has to be waged against the increased destruction caused by storms and other natural disasters; the rebuilding of the infrastructure; the cost of violence, that is passed on to our health insurance premiums - among other places; and the cost to incarcerate criminals, and fund the policing of our communities. How much is wasted on prisons, large police departments, emergency room treatment, and medical rehabilitation caused by violent incidences? The notion that there is a lot of waste & theft in government should be revisited. Is the price of toilet seats and hammers still highly inflated? Theft, fraud, and waste in government and the private sector, should also be discouraged, frowned upon, and prosecuted. The U.S. military in Iraq resorted to trying to pay Iraqis, to not fight against them. If the American people stopped engaging in the behavior that creates all this waste, they could demand redirection of the saving to themselves, in the form of funding for job training and development, education, housing, drug and mental health treatment, healthcare coverage, scientific research and development, etc.. As it stands now rebuilding the infrastructure and rebuilding from the increasing destruction of storms and other natural disasters, will be taxing enough on states and the national budget, now we also have to recover economically from the pandemic, whenever it ends. As it states now we waste far too much on things that don't directly affirm life. All this is happening in a more competitive global market. The 'Green New Deal' proposals would not appear as extreme, if we lived more mindfully/conscientiously. It's not rocket science, but who is saying the most simple and fundamental things we need to be hearing and considering? The simple question of, in a world of limited resources, how much wealth and thus power should one person be allowed to amass, should be the fundamental starting point when addressing disparities. Also as a society we must as in a competitive situation there will naturally be those who win and those who don't. How should society view those how don't, and how should those who don't view themselves, is the second part of that question. Another fundamental question is, what is a fair amount of compensation for a person's labor or contribution to the production of a product? As race is so inextricably linked to economics and class, the unresolved problem of the color-line that W.E.B. Dubois spoke of may very well be resolved by resolving the problem these questions represent in the 21st century.

The root of the problem in our society is the intensive focus on the external (capital, acquisition, status) at the cost of the internal (meaning, purpose, individual contribution and agency, a sense of belonging). In such a dynamic, people will always be alien as individuals and whole groups. If the problem were simply resource-based, we'd have scarcity; instead, we have greed -- so the problem is moral and spiritual. I'm grateful that you both are some of the only people really addressing this from the unique platform you have. Thank you!

I've been saying for some time now that we need an examination of how we define success in America. It's too often perceived as the accumulation of money & power. Greed has become the number one value in the US and is being thought to the youngest children with Capitalistic propaganda. We need to re-evaluate how we define success & teach the "spiritual values" West spoke about.

In fact, Ive encouraged YT channels I enjoy like Jackson Hinkle to do a Livestream on the subject. While politics is important so is the politics, psychology, & spirituality of the individual and how our politics & economic system has influenced it. I certainly hope Marianne and Cornell can figure out an avenue whereby we can all join together in dismantling a broken global social matrix and replace it with one that's sane and inclusive. Any thing is possible when we join together with love. I am ready to sign up now!

You are both in a chiros moment, with the most beautiful and inspiring voices within the song that is emerging. Thank you, from the heart.

Two of my favorite, inspirational human beings! And Dr. West's thoughts about who should be our role models, that moral and spiritual greatness is what we should look for and emulate is so true. And of course, these can be renowned people or the people who are actually in your life. Being an admirer of James Baldwin, I was excited when I found out that he also admired Leo Tolstoy, who is one of my favorite authors. It's almost like finding new friends, and finding out some of their "friends" are yours as well, whether living or dead. But also those around you; my mother was always a model for me. She was not an activist in the traditional sense, but her humanity, gentleness and openness to everyone was a profound lesson to witness growing up, as well as those I have worked with whether in a job or some kind of volunteer work, or just even striking up a conversation with a stranger in line. The opportunity to be open to others and enjoy SERVING with others is one of the secrets to your happiness and the happiness of those around you.
