Why did retired US Generals and contractors make a fortune from the war, but the Afghan people lived in poverty? Over 300 million a day for 20 years was wasted on Afghanistan and all that money went to the corrupt Afghan government, corrupt US Generals, and corrupt US contractors.

Yep, it sure did. And that was the whole point. You don’t think the U.S stayed in Afghanistan for 20 years to help the locals do you?. There is an a old saying “War Is A Racket”. It’s usually waged to enrich a tiny minority at everyone else sees expense.

Same as here. Presidents salary is $400,000 - Clinton's Rich, Bushes Rich, Obama Rich. And most weren't rich going in or THAT rich . The cabal has been printing $ if they need it. From what I understand in the UK pensions are gone and in US social security is gone or really low and probably 401's. That's why Cuomo and others were killing our elderly !! Nancy Pelosi's salary is like $180,000, yet she's either billionaire or millionaire. They send our illegal taxes to other countries and they get kick backs. Rather than let us keep our hard earned $, they'd rather help a foreign country that probably hates us. They use our sons, father's, brothers, etc... in a made up war only to profit and then turn around and tell va hospitals to withold meds and shit. They have killed so many Americans, they better pay !!! I heard Bush Jr was purposely blowing up buses on foreign US bases with soldiers in them for insurance $ or something. They get off on killing people, that's Lucifer for ya !!

According to a journalism professor on a radio talk show I was listening to some years back, people just weren't interested in the Afghanistan war. It didn't garner the interest of people, like say, Kim Kardashian's latest fashion choice. So, the media didn't bother reporting on it. She also explained that so many of her journalism student's had no idea what was going on in the world at large.

SO GRATEFUL! Moved to tears, literally, hearing 2 Amazing Women speaking with such Integrity, Wisdom, Courage and True Vision. May You Be Supported & Blessed in Every Way! The creative, yet skillfully researched and documented cartoon book:"Addicted to War: Why the U.S. Can't Kick Militarism" by Joel Andreas is a great, relatively clear and easy read. It really helped me shift the conditioning I had received since early elementary school, about what our "Great Nation" is currently motivated by, and pointed to what is truly the current main driver, Profit for a few. Sad, yet when we know the issues, we can create new possibilities. May we create a World where all basic needs are met for all people, and that all can thrive, which given our over inflated lifestyles, may look more like "Living More Simply, So Others Can Simply Live." Blessings Upon Blessings Marianne Williamson and Sarah Chayes! A true breath of fresh air. ~Dr. Suzanne Lerner

Its not women or men, from left or right, that determine outcomes, its the ethics, courage, and resilence to corruption and the influence of life or death king or queen makers that run the show from the shadows. As we know there are few who can withstand and truly stand up. Systems entrenched in centralised power only become more corrupt and powerful. To weaken the UN/WHO/EU/Crown/Pentagon grim reapers of war and poverty we must start creating our own decentralised self governed communities and economys and pur our power and energy there vs into feeding those energy vampires.

Wait…. Why is she skipping the part where the Taliban offered to hand over bin Laden? …the fact that the stated mission was to get bin Laden, not topple a sovereign nation’s government?

Actually she gets asked that question in an interview with Democracy Now and says she doesn't know enough to confirm or deny that, which is kind of surprising coming from someone in her position. In any case she does acknowledge that at some point there is officially a shift from fighting terrorism to nation-building. Of course there were people all along with all the right/obvious arguments and regular (if insufficient) press coverage existed that demonstrated how wrong everything was about that intervention. It's not one of those "had we known then what we know now", the basic facts were clear all along. Even the hunt for Bin Laden was some more obvious demagoguery that was never going to reduce terrorism in the least given that Al Qaeda was now a worldwide self-franchising virus due to Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld wars and that the new branches of al Qaeda that had no need whatsoever for Bil Laden. The Bush years continued to provide Bin Laden with the ultimate victory of spreading terrorism instead of fighting it, even as they were hunting him down. And still you don't hear the pundits acknowledge that, i.e. how we so clearly aided radical islam instead of thwarting it. "Getting Bil Laden" was so ridiculously prioritized by Americans in general (rank and file) that it ended in Obama pursuing the mission to try to get the rednecks to hate him a little less, avoid the backlash, which obviously wasn't enough. Plus it was carried out fully illegally as an assassination, and the guy who actually executed him is now some sort of star getting interviewed left and right, some sort of hero. Absolutely revolting. The reason they switched the mission statement to include nation building was so contractors (including but not limited to mercenaries) could go in and make some money. Everybody should have known what was going on all along. For all their brutish worldview and ways, the Taliban are not necessarily the worst among the actors on that scene in the past twenty years. Blackwater, Pakistan's ambiguity, the CIA's history with the Mujahiddin, all of it was out in the open, all along. If we'd never been Afghans themselves might have overthrown the Taliban.

The US doesn't have any foreign policy - there's a phrase in an old Tom Clancy novel where a US CIA officer says that "Foreign Relations means fucking other countries." That's what happened in Afghanistan; except that the US taxpayers are who got screwed. The US Military/Industrial/Congressional Complex - as usual - made out like bandits.

@celesteconverse

It's not capitalism that's the root of this evil. It's corruption of the capitalist system by the people in our gvt. Our founding fathers said our system of gvt could not survive unless honest people served. That is why they limited the amount of time a person could serve. We now have an oligarchy ruling us. The citizens of this country have to fix this.

The first question that arises at the outset of this long winded interview is what the hell was Sarah Chayes doing in Afghanistan? Who appointed her as a spokesperson for the Afghan nation? This notion that somehow this American was there to impart good in Afghanistan by supposedly contributing to progress speaks volumes about the arrogance behind such notions. They do not want you there. You do not speak for them nor represent them. Lest there be an inkling of doubt to this response, I adamantly disagree with the Taliban policies and practices. However, I also acknowledge that the U.S. and all her western allies that participated in the debacle in Afghanistan have no say in how the country should be governed. When the U.S. and her NATO allies had maximum forces in Afghanistan they did not sue for peace or tried to negotiate a political solution. Instead they went on an orgy of killing, maiming and destroying. More than 170,000 paid with their lives as a result of this invasion. The Taliban are a part of Afghanistan whether the west likes it or not. The aliens in this scenario are those that traveled thousands of miles to drop tons of bombs and destroy the fabric of that already fragile society. Though I vehemently disagree with the Taliban, it’s not up to me to decide the fate of Afghanistan. The change that will eventually come to Afghanistan must come from within. As for those Afghanis that sold their souls to the U.S. they will soon find out that life in America is not what it is advertised as. They will find out about the grinding poverty in our inner cities. They will see for themselves how shamelessly we allow the homeless to flood the streets in major cities across this country. They sold out their countrymen by cooperating with the foreign invaders and of course they are scared for the treason they committed against their own nation. All of this could have been avoided were it not for the arrogance of claiming the right to kill whoever was deemed beneath our “American exceptionalism”. Finally, all those that authorized, directed and participated in these wars against the people of Iraq and Afghanistan are war criminals and unfortunately true justice will not fall upon them. The American motto from all sides of the political spectrum is: “We need enemies to justify our existence.”

Afghanistan’s reasons for existing could be the same as America’s if people weren’t so greedy, fearful and uninformed. Afghanistan is clearly complicated. So many tribes, limited resources and complex networks; it reminds me of the US and how people don’t trust the police. Sorry for your losses.
