Marie Antoinette & Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia are so similar in many ways. Both were doomed the moment they became the Consorts of their new countries. If only they were like Catherine the Great & Catherine of Aragon (both teenagers) who integrated themselves to their new countries (Russia & England) and made an effort to win the love of their people.

Her marriage was an alliance to keep peace, she didn't have a job. Her husbands duty was to make provisions for the people, job creation, food supplies such as giving grain, seeds, and housing. Each government has learned a valuable lesson from the lack of or failure to govern. MA's cheating is a result of her husband.
@SocialExperiment23221 күн бұрын
She did try to win the favor of the French. They hated her no matter what she did. Even her own husband distrusted her and didn’t defend her from any scrutiny. She was completely alone while also surrounded by a million judging eyes. At the point of Louis gifting her a whole building was when she started to give up and hide from France but even then she sought to do good. They blamed her for everything meanwhile her King could not make a decision to save his life and put France in an economic crisis. The people were starving. If anything it was the Kings fault although I also have sympathy for him for he was just put in this situation that he did not ask for and he knew he wasn’t fit for. They were children used as political puppets by their parents and in the end they were the punching bags of the country. This revolution was nothing but a pointless bloodbath.
@ScouseJazmin21 күн бұрын
I wouldn't say either of them were doomed. Marie Antoinette was amazingly well-liked by the people of Paris when she first arrived, and Russia didn't have a particular problem with Hesse or Alixandra - and these positive relationships might not have lasted forever, but they could have lasted a lot longer if these women were a little more savvy. They both represented countries that would go on to become enemies, and some dislike was inevitable, but they both made some very juvenile, entitled decisions that didn't help their situation.

So many comments, yet not one expressed sadness or sympathy for the starving mothers and children of France who endured unimaginable suffering, while she lived a life of luxury. The same holds true today-people are captivated by celebrities but show little interest in the struggles of single mothers working two jobs. But I digress.

That is largely a myth. 18th century press engaged in a good deal of fake news of people not having more than a "pile of salt" to eat. In truth, French peasants, particularly in the countryside, had liberal access to victuals and were, for the mosy part, staunchly monarchist all along. Food shortages were experienced mostly DURING the revolution in Paris, a situation resulting from poor revolutionary administration and not attributed to the style of life of the king and queen.

Did you not listen to the video? She was a spoiled girl who didn't care to learn her studies, learn the people of France, gambled and wasted away TONS of money of lavish things (which was funded by the taxpayers of France hard earned money!) They continuously spent and spent and ate marvelously without care that their people were literally starving, and paying off HER spending and debts. She was awful!

Bit of a mistake. The aunts were NOT the sisters of Louis XV, they were his daughters and hence the aunts of the Dauphin Louis- Auguste, not his great aunts
Women in history were constantly used as political pawns they had no say or influence in their own fate. She may have been extravagant in her lifestyle but she did try to help. It wouldn't have mattered what she did to be honest she would have still suffered the same fate.
@Crystal11Skulls24 күн бұрын
How did she try to help? She gambled away tons of money. She spent and spent for a lavish life with the decorations, outfits, food and items. All of this was funded by France's tax payers. So what attempt did she make to help the people, and not herself and her lifestyle?

I learned in college that this is an enduring myth. 🙂 Jean-Jacques Rousseau attributed these words to "a great princess" without ever naming her directly in his book, "Confessions". I have read conflicting accounts about when this book was written (1765? 1767?) but either way, it was written when Marie Antoinette was still a child. Historians think these words may have been linked to Marie Antionette about 50 years after the French Revolution in attempt turn popular opinion against the extravagant behavior of the upper classes.
