Real Royalty I think I might have asked this before but if you haven’t and I’ll check on YT, but could you do an expose’ of Mary, Queen of Scot’s please? There’s a lot made of Mary AND her cousin, Elizabeth I, but not much is known about Mary’s life out there about her life once at Hollyrood Castle, her half brother James, her relationship with David Rizzio, her courtship of Elizsbeth’s love Dudley that she sent to marry Mary, her REAL marriage to Darnley and MORE on the death of Darnley, her plot with Bothwell to kill Darnley and the casket letters which sealed Mary’s fate. In regards to Mary Boleyn, who was known as the Great Prostitute, apparently made out the best considering her Father pimped out both Mary and Anne for his financial and political gain. I didn’t know Mary lived out a wealthy life considering she married as you said without permission of her sister the Queen nor Anne’s Father, to a commoner, a soldier. I didn’t think you, as a woman in those times, could inherit the family fortune as it were even though Dad died disgraced. George was a scapegoat for a charge of incest IMO, just to further add charges to Anne including witchcraft she could not escape. Was George Boleyn gay as portrayed in the Tudors? I’m sure that subject as broached with David Rizzio in Reign was so taboo that I’m sure little was ever even known about it much less written accounts about it. I did enjoy your video on these 2 ladies. Mary who started out mocked and scorned for being a mistress and poor Anne who lost her head for love, it was Mary who really got the best and last laugh of them all. But in reality I wish Anne had lived to see her daughter become the first female successful reigning Monarch Elizabeth I. Mary’s decedent is the current Elizabeth, Queen of England?? Wow. The protestant church gained more ground during his son Edwards VI reign, being that Edward was brought up solely in that faith. I disagree. Mary followed the status quo. She let Henry use her and throw her away. If you call that outsmarting a tyrant, then I guess you must also call every other mistress smart. Survival is a guarentee if you bow your head and live your life following what men in society say. Mary wanted to survive in society so in short she got it. Anne wanted to thrive in society . She got married to guy by getting him to divorce his wife and breaking away from the Roman church. She also gave birth to one if the most celebrated queen in history. Her daughter is a queen whose reign is remembered as being golden. I would more agree with Anne having the last laugh because even if Henry didn't believe in her daughter despite disposing her and marrying another who gave him a son. Her daughter brought more glory to her family aka Henry's name than her rivals daughter (Elizabeth sister)or her other rivals son . That was his big obsession and it came from the women he beheaded. Yes, marrying the love of your life is a big deal. But Mary not only had been married before and was the king's mistress. So of course the only guy who would except her is the guy who loves her. If you mean Queen Mary of Scots, I don't think she really got the last laugh. Her later later relatives (aka king charles) gets beheaded. The last laugh belongs currently king Richard 3 whom the current queen is the relative of. I do which Elizabeth had a daughter or a son. All the children of Henry became unstable, controlling and had people with motives to kill them. Henry spent most of his life blaming women for not having son's and his harsh behavior to the women in a way offset his children behavior and their relationships with each other and other people. Their behavior which they got from their power loving father cost them ironically their power.

I watched Helena Bonham Carter play Jane Grey back in the 80s and all I could think of during her honeymoon scenes with Cary Elwes was, 'run, Jane, run.' I really think that not only did Henry knew Anne was innocent, he probably had those accusations against her fabricated himself so he could get rid of her for not having a son and because he was bored of her. Karma got him good, though. Henry died a slow and painful death from his many illnesses and not one of his male heirs survived. I honestly think that's what the Boleyn family did with both daughters. That's how it was done back in that time....when men wanted to make alliances or increase their power, they used their daughters (especially if they were beautiful and a virgin) as pawns to get their own way. The Boleyns were hungry for power and wanted to control the King. They saw a perfect opportunity because Queen Katherine could not produce the son and heir that Henry so desperately craved. So they first put Mary in front of him to be his mistress. And then Anne was put before the King after his interest in Mary waned. The King loved Katherine.....he LUSTED after Anne. He craved her. But she wanted more than a night in his bed. She wanted to be Queen. And the ironic thing is....while Henry had 6 wives altogether, he never got the son and heir he so desperately yearned for....but he DID get a strong successor in the beautiful daughter that Anne gave him....who would become known as the greatest monarch in English history. Queen Elizabeth. Another irony is, Anne thought her happiness and success would be achieved when she became Henry's Queen and gave him the son he so desired. But even when she got her crown, she was lonely and miserable and she kept having miscarriages and she eventually lost both Henry and her own life. Yet her sister, Mary, did the unthinkable....she fell in love with and married William Stafford.....a man who had no money, no land, no title, nothing that would help her or her family rise in power....and yet she was happier living on that humble little farm with William and her children than she ever was in the lavish and opulent years she spent at Court. She found peace and happiness in being a poor man's wife living in the country

The birth of Elizabeth wasn't as much of a catastrophe as it's made out to be. Yes, Henry and Anne were disappointed, but they were positive that sons would follow in the future. Elizabeth's birth was still celebrated, even though the celebrations were smaller than they would've been for a boy. But I really enjoyed the video overall! @@TheYoli182 Accidently actually - one of my grandfather's cousins was a historian & traced back our branch of the West family line to our ancestor, Nathaniel West, who was the brother of Sir Thomas West, Lord De La Warr & first Governor of Virginia (& the man for whom the state of Delaware is named). He had even written a book about our family tree. I wanted t know more, like who his parents were, so I looked up Sir Thomas, knowing he would be easier to trace & his geneology would be the same as Nathaniel's. I saw his mother was Ann Knollys, whose name was highlighted, meaning she was of historical significance. I then saw that her mother was Catherine Carey, whose name I recognized as the daughter of Mary Boleyn.

The Tudor portraits are not very accurate. All guys look the same, all ladies look the same... Also, the beauty standards were different. Back then, it was said about Henry that he was the most handsome prince in all Christendom. He was tall and athletic, so according to the age standards, he must have been considered as really good looking. He started gaining weight after the jousting accident in 1536. Between her father and not being able to say "no" to the King, Anne really didn't stand a chance. Was she a schemer? Probably. She may have challenged Henry to prove his "love" for her, but never could realize what would happen when he took up the challenge. Was she hot-tempered, inconsiderate, demanding, rude? Yes. Most women of nobility were. Also, she could have been sweeter than punch, but without a male heir, she would have been disposed of--look at Katharine of Aragon. But Anne brought out the best of the Monarchy to the people by setting up educational programs, charities, and pushed for women's rights. She was a scholar and an authoress. Most importantly, she is the unofficial Mother of the United States of America.

He did that all on his own. Henry had a lot and I mean A lot of Mental health issues which made him the way he was in the end . He may have thought that he was cursed due to marrying his brothers wife .Catherine of Aragon , but that was a whole lot of BS. Anne and Mary have been the subject of so much amazing dialog with my students about is it better to play the quick game or the long game? Lol Mary played the quick game and was content to be Henry’s baby mama, but in the end she was the only one who got out of it alive. Anne played the long game and insisted on marriage and got what she wanted- to be queen- yet got her head cut off when she couldn’t have a boy. I always thought that if each sister would have taken the other’s strategy, everyone would have survived. If Mary had played Anne’s long game, and married the king, Henry would have gotten the boy he wanted, as one of Henry’s 2 illegitimate children with Mary was a boy. Anne, as the mistress, would have had been baby mama to Elizabeth but neither of them ever would have been queen. Yet both would have survived as none of Anne’s later miscarriages would have been legitimate anyway. But each sister (and their brother also for that matter) would have survived if they had switched roles. All the current monarchs today are descendants of Mary Boleyn even now, we know Henry’s and Anne’s line died with Elizabeth.

Secondly, BOTH of her children produced progeny. Her daughter Catherine had 16 children and her son, Henry Carey, also had 16 children with his wife and numerous illegitimate children. He wasn't executed though so I don't even know who you're thinking of but Henry Carey died at 70 at his house. Elizabeth I was even about to bestow a dukedom upon him when he died. You don't do that to someone who is about to be executed and die in shame. It's only Anne Boleyn who has no DIRECT descendants because Elizabeth I died childless.

I think that Anne of Cleves was the smartest of all of his wives... she knew better than to even try and fight the annulment Henry wanted. And because of her obedience, she ended up with a nice chunk of land and generous annuity. I rather think they would have devised some way to still blame the woman, like her womb was insufficiant, or she made sure she did not have a son by some means. Because to acknowledge that they bear the burden of proof of whether a child is male or female is to lose their absolute power over women. Before this medical fact was established, a man could never be certain that his offspring was biologically his, women understood this, and going thru the female line and considering all children born of a union as the children of the Woman's clan made more sense. No child could be declared a bastard, a woman retained her assets of land, house and goods even if the man abandoned her and the children. He could not take away her money, land or throw her out of the house, leaving her homeless and starving. A woman had a balance of power and respect owed to her, within the community, a girl was allowed sexual freedom and any child born was considered a " child of the Hearth" a clan member. Once she chose a mate however, she was to be sexually faithful to that man. If he did not treat her kindly, she could cut the tie of partnership without his consent and chose a new man, the new man would be expected to depending on the community, become a part of the new clan and accept any previous children, and because the uncles and aunts of the mother trained the children rather than the parents, this helped with preventing personal pressure of expectations or jealousy of a parent to a child. This was and is, I believe, a much healthier viewpoint and balance of power than a male dominated power structure, our society goes by today. To kill your wife or child had consequences then, both sexes before a formal binding were free to experiece sex. With a formal binding, and building a foundation for a solid family meant, both parties were faithful to each other, would work out issues that came up, love and protect- not cottonball a child and work as a family unit within a bigger family unit or clan -- all parties working towards the aim of providing food, shelter, peaceful transactions within and outside of the community. Raise children that could look after themselves and have moral precepts and cultural understanding of their place in the world. To transmit ideas, morality, customs, abilities to succeed and carry on into the future. Children may have had a shorter -what we would consider as a childhood, and would have need to learn a lot of things much faster in order to survive. But they did survive, thrive raise a new generation and pass their knowlege on. How much midwife knowledge and techniques were torn away by a male dominated power base., that denied that a woman had both a Soul and Intellect, and was just a possession to be used, abused and destroyed with a Man's whim. How long have we Women been fighting for Our Rights as Human Beings? Humans have this terrible ability to justify any behavior if it is to their own personal benefit. That is our Achilles Heel.

What I find rather woeful is that the Spanish ambassador, someone who loathed Anne and always referred to her as a concubine and nothing more, said that the proceedings were a complete sham however much he was repulsed by her, he found the charges implausible. Despite masses claiming her to be innocent, the jury set up conducted a very hasty trial that lasted for only around a week till the execution, while gathering the evidence against anne and for the conviction of katherine took three months of meticulous investigation which show how false the charges were. And to make it worse, Henry burnt her letters, took out all the H and A's entwined in a design that were carved into the tiles of Hampton court, burnt all her portraits and every trace of her he could, leaving behind one dubious portrait and his share of the letters in their documented conversations. Some of the H's and A's still survived nonetheless and are still there.

@@colleta2400 This is why I personally believe Cromwell did engineer most of it. Chapyuis made it clear that is Cromwell, not the King, who was responsible for everything. He told his master that the minister "he's blamed and brought about the whole affair". First of all, he had motive. It was clear as late in April that Anne still had influence with the King when Henry slapped Cromwell down regarding trying to pursue an Imperial alliance instead of French as we all know Anne has always favored. Anne was upset about the monasteries and collecting the funds - Anne didn't want them to be destroyed in the manner they were doing because she very much realized the people still needed them particularly the poor. She had a sermon preached basically calling Cromwell out on giving the King bad advice. Shortly after this, Cromwell disappears for a week and comes back and we all know what happened from there. He had a meeting with the King even though there is no written documentation of what was actually said but I think it's safe to assume he most certainly had some mind of plan after he took off for a week. All of the men implicated in the scandal were troublesome opponents. William Brereton was one of the clearest indications. He dominated the monasteries in Cheshire and blocked Cromwell's attempts of reform. Who may have encouraged lawlessness but at the very least covered it up where he was steward. Mark Smeaton was taken to Cromwells residence in Stepney alone and "confessed" and we all know he was most likely tortured - as he wasnt a noble by birth and was of lowly origin versus the others. Thomas wyatt and Sir Richard Page - Cromwell made it his business to acquit them - and the fact that both if these men escaped with their head just shows to what extent he actually dictated it all. He placed spies in her company at the Tower and had the constable report every word she said which is part of the most damning evidence against her that was twisted and embellished. There is even a letter from Anne found on Cromwells desk professing her innocence that likely never made it Henry's person - though that isnt sure or not. Along with all the letters from the constable reporting everything she did and said to HIM. He aligned himself with the Seymour's which were a more conservative party yet it shows how pragmatic and desperate he was to rid himself of Anne. He most likely did have spies in her household and bribed them prior to this whom also twisted and embellished incidents words and the like. Though that cannot be proved without a doubt but it is widely believed by all that he did. Sorry for the long response. I just feel that this is evidence to some degree...

Even though Henry claimed that Anne was an adulteress, and even though he bastardized Elizabeth (and her half-sister Mary), he kept them in the line of succession because they were his daughters and he couldn't bear the thought of the crown passing out of his bloodline (as of course it did). It wasn't just the political difficulty of having a female succession that drove Henry to maneuver himself out of his marriages. The lack of offspring - especially male offspring - reflected badly on the king and highlighted his virility deficit. Henry didn't want to be thought less of a man, so he undid his marriages when they appeared to be fruitless.

Anne was in a tough position. After 6 months at my new company, my dream job, the CEO liked me (and relentlessly pursued me). (I found him repulsive) I declined his advances, and he in turn found pleasure in making my life miserable there. Ultimately I left. I know. Sexual harassment is illegal. I just didn't want any more Stress. Nobody is going to speak out against him, and risk their job.... It's not always great to catch a powerful man's eye 😔

Anne is a remarkable woman. History plots her as this schemer that had her eyes in nothing but the crown bit I mean let's be real here. Were talking about the 15th century. She didnt have much choice once Henry laid eyes on her. Cavendish, wolsey aid made it clear in his writings that it WAS Henry that stopped Anne's marriage to Henry Percy. It wasnt Wolseys idea but it was the bidding of the King. Whay choice did she HAVE but to have self respect and not just lay down and be a mistress. Henry was completely besotted by Anne and I think he would have tried to marry her regardless of what Anne did or didnt do. I also think her downfall is not written correctly either. The majority try to claim it was because Henry tired of her and because she didnt have a male heir. But Henry wasnt stupid. She already had a healthy baby girl and they had only been married for 3 years. She still was perfectly capable of giving him a son. Henry had an accident and head injury and his impulsiveness and paranoia increased. ANNES enemies especially Cromwell orchestrated that whole affair. They played on Henry's emotions and new theybhad to move fast before he had time to logically think it through. Henry kept many of Anne's momentum with her signature and name after he died that was found in his belongings. I dont think he ever moved n from it ans he certainly never loved Jane. He regretted until the day he died.

I just wrote this in a previous comment but I think more simple minded people love to view shocking history like they do movies: Gotta have heroes and villains and it must entertain with lots of drama 😄. Rather than researching and getting to know the real man, it's easier to just project onto Henry VIII any behavior indicative of a villain. Sadly if they started reading books (by historians not just Philippa Gregory) they'd learn that the real story is more rich, fascinating, and full of true life drama just as it is.

When they are talking about the early days of Mary's involvement with Henry, they keep showing a painting of Henry that was done late in his life, when he was fat and very ill. That isn't how Henry looked as a young man (when Mary and Anne knew him). It's leading the audience to believe that this ugly, older guy was taking advantage of the sisters, when in fact, the younger Henry was considered quite dashing and attractive. Not sure why a documentary should lean that way, instead of presenting the story as non-fiction; you know, as a documentary.

Katherine was the only girl he was married to who was in her teens, and extremely older than. His first wife was about seven years older than him. Henry wasn't known for going after the very young ones, with the exception of KH. He seemed to have a taste for ladies in there twenties & thirties, more than anything else. Not sure what happened with KH! Well, other than the fact her family practically dangled KH in front of Henry, like a carrot to a bunny!

You did Tale of Two sisters: Mary and Anne Boleyn Mary and Elizabeth Tudor Elizabeth and Margaret Windsor. No one talks about Mary and Anne Stuart. COME ON!!!!! Their Relationship was Strained with Anne's Marriage to George of Denmark. In Anne's case her relationship with her brother-in-law William of Orange really shaped England. Though Anne never gave an heir to the throne, her Reign was yet another Golden age, not as golden as Elizabeth, Victoria or Elizabeth but She was a great queen. America still was a British colony and the Infamous Salem Witch trials occurred during William and Mary's reign. The so called Glorious revolution really Strained Mary's relationship to their father. The Loving sisters had a really strained relationship in the end. In fact some believe that Anne never wanted George I to succeed her rather she wanted her Catholic Half brother to be her heir, but it was Mary's Golden Revolution that made the Parliament much more powerful. This could be a Potential Material for talking about "The Tale of Two sisters". But Nobody spoke of it as if they were never a part of History.

I just found this channel and I'm honestly excited about it. Only.....a little dissapointed at the amount of adds on here. Every six minutes or so seems a bit much for a long video?
