Marik's Top 10 Most IMPORTANT Cards

Marik Ishtar held hatred in heart for the Pharaoh - And for good reason, as he and his family lived a life of suffering in his service.
Marik, however, refused this unfair fate and set off on a crusade to defeat Yami Yugi so that he could claim the title of Pharaoh and free himself, and his family from their duty as Tomb Keepers.
But because of all of the pain, hurt and hatred Marik had endured throughout his childhood, he also had a second personality known as Yami Marik - Who was even more twisted than the regular Marik and was only held back by the love that he felt for his family.
So today we’re going to look at Marik and Yami Marik’s ten most important cards, how he used them to torture his opponents, and whether or not they’d be capable of defeating the Pharaoh in the actual TCG.

Joey's interaction with the anime lava golem is why the red eyes archetype fusion spell can only summon the one monster to the field. Lava golem proof if you only have 1 monster!

In MD, before tears got restricted into oblivion, Egyptian god slime and muddragon of the swamp was a fun duo to bring out. Not that it actually protected against things like swordsouls or branded, but it pretty much solved the mirror.

Yami Marik didn't use the immortal phoenix mode against Yami Bakura. He actually used the ability to transfer all of his life points into the Winged Dragon of Ra's attack points.

Egyptian God Slime can also be made by tributing Metal Reflect Slime. I found good use of it in stun decks in MD, especially with Banisher of the Radiance.

In Duel Links, Yami Marik has a Skill that essentially gives him all of Ra's missing abilities, most notably the "Gain the attack of the monsters used to Tribute Summon Ra" effect.

Makyura’s old effect was really cool since it allowed you to activate traps from your hand when its send to the grave but I guess it was changed because of how powerful of the effect was at the time.

Even today this effect would be broken af. Traps are balanced around the fact that they need to be set before being activated, meaning that traps tend to have better effects than spells.

Regarding the ban on burn cards, from what I remember, it seemed more to be a case of all pure burn cards being banned for some reason rather than them being powerful. My guess is that Kaiba thought they encouraged boring play.

I don't know if it's because he thought they would cause boring play, but yes, all pure burn cards were banned in Battle City. It's also an interesting note that even if they weren't, one additional Battle City rule would have kept players from just spamming the same burn card if they managed to get all three copies in hand at once, as Kaiba placed a hard once per turn on all spells (i.e. you could still activate multiple spells in one turn, but they must all have different names).

Good guess... but the real reason was because of the safety reasons. Experiencing pain from direct attacks is okay, but because Duel Disks are still being tested in this tourney, they haven't worked out the kinks on burn cards. The burn aftereffects can last past the actual game where it can he scarring. Hence why burn cards are illegal in the tourney.

12:18 Imagine if they made a Mystic Mine Retrain, based around Malik's Nightmare Steelcage 16:53 If they gave support to Malik's strategy (the one focused on the Slimes to Summon Ra), I wonder if they would get stuff focused on stall and burn damage. Something like for example: adapting Viser Des's effect so you can banished it from hand or GY as a quick effect, to negate a monster's effect, and if you negate a monster's effect on the field (or replace it so its effect becomes "at each end phase, inflict 500 LP of Damage to this card's controller"), that monster becomes unable to attack, change its battle position, or be used for the summon of a fusion, synchro, xyz, link or ritual summon. That way you can mimic , kinda, Malik's playstyle of "torture the opponent slowly" (LP damage), while he assembles the requirements for his egyptian god Maybe say it can only be tributed for the summon of a fiend or a divine-beast's monster's summon (so you can use lava golem or ra's sphere mode) 21:18 The only way I can think of to adap revival jam as a retrain (without) becoming insanly busted would be make a new jam that if it leaves the field by an opponent's card effect or battle, it can summon either a token, or the original revival jam. and that while the retrain is on the GY, you don't need to pay LP for revival jam's revival effect. and if revival jam leaves the field outside battle, you can summon the jam retrain

While my favorite thing about Marik is how he brought the insanity to the show, it is a shame he focused more on torturing to death his foes instead of out-dueling them. He is my second favorite Yu-Gi-Oh villian ever, his and Ra's English Version themes are so very good. Despite all that, he is beaten out by Yubel, my absolute favorite. Years ago in Nightmare Troubadour, I Dueled Marik countless times until he gave me The Winged Dragon Ra. That was so fun getting to summon amd use it...I miss that game... Lastly looking forward to Jaden's, Jesse's, and Yubel's videos.

Quite the interesting variety of monsters picked for this list, even if #1 wasn't very surprising. I'm just surprised Zera the Mant made #10, considering Marik never directly used the card at all NOR was he shown owning it at any point. Since Marik is likely the last DM-era character to have truly iconic cards, moving onto GX-era chars makes the most sense to me. Maybe start with Jaden if you're going to do that.

pretty late but this holds up Neko Mane King was used as Anti Tearizu because Neko Mane King stopped their field mid combo and the one Penguin monster could turn it making it into a gamble for the Tear player. Mushroom Man #2 was used to… block Kashtira since they all relied on summoning with their own effects and were all too high to be summoned normally.

It should be noted that Meteor of Destruction had no LF cost. It was a free 1000 burn card in tournament with 4000 LP. It was banned in Battle City since Kaiba banned all cards that could inflict damage directly or destroy a monster.

Maybe could've also mentioned another TCG form of Ra, a pretty cool take on its anime phoenix form - Immortal Phoenix: ATK 4000 / DEF 4000 Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned by its own effect. If "The Winged Dragon of Ra" is sent from the field to your GY while this card is in your GY: Special Summon this card. Cards and effects cannot be activated in response to this effect's activation. This card is unaffected by other cards' effects. You can pay 1000 LP; send 1 monster on the field to the GY. Once per turn, during the End Phase: Send this card to the GY, and if you do, Special Summon 1 "The Winged Dragon of Ra - Sphere Mode" from your hand, Deck, or GY, ignoring its Summoning conditions.

I guess for GX, the big ones are Judai/Jaden, Yubel, Cyrus, Alexis, Chazz, Ed/Astor, Jessie, Zane, Darkness, and Sartorius are the ones that come to mind.

I run Metal Reflect Slime & Egyptian God Slime in both my Sacred Beast and King Tiger Decks on Master Duel, the former also in real life! In the case of the former, I use it as an additional means to get Continuous Traps into the Graveyard to power up Uria, but in both cases it's to get out a 3000 ATK monster who not only has destruction protection, but also redirects attacks, mainly away from the kitty (and if you can think of a better reason, I'd love to hear it!)! I also run Sphere Mode in my Kaiju Deck, alongside Lava Golem, I don't think I need to explain the thinking there, but I also run one Ra, cuz he'll be sticking around with 4000 ATK! I mean, hey, I've done something right, that Deck got me up to Platinum, so! Twice! (That said, Godzilla is pretty much the reason I got into the whole Japanese Monster stuff in the first place, such as Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon, so... And I have a playset of a lot of the Kaiju cards in real life!)

A play I do against lava Golem is, they bring it out, play creature swap and give it to them. It then really depends on damage nullifiers like magic cylinder and other cards

What made Lava Golem a true threat was it's burn damage combos. LG delt 1000 points per turn and people loved using one or two Nightmare Wheel cards on it. Nightmare Wheel deals 500 burn damage per turn so two dealt 1000 points. Doing this delt 2000 burn damage per turn and could potentially win you the game. That combo was a menace to deal with back in the day. I doubt it would work at all these days.

In duel links, lava golem has been nerfed a bit. I use it a lot and the burn effect these days is only 500 damage. Pair that with owners seal and you have a 3000atk beat stick that the opponent paid for (though you pay 500 life per turn)

Doubt it. Makyura once got me an unofficial 0TK (I won on my opponent’s first turn; Card Destruction triggered it) in an Exodia turbo deck back in 2008, because of all of the draw traps in my deck. I assume there have been more printed since then.

No, there are better traps these days and ability to turn them into essentially spell is going to be game breakingly strong. Imagine getting droll locked on first turn or grave digger trap hole'd or that suddenly your solemn in hand allowed you to play through multiple hand traps. Traps gotten too much support already, they shouldn't get more.

A good thing to note regarding Meteor of Destruction (as well as other spells that just burn the opponent) in the anime is that it was banned by Kaiba BECAUSE is was a direct burn card. Sure, there's the side effect that allows you to force an opponent's monster to attack you, but aside from Joey using that to force a tie to save Yugi, why would you EVER use that second effect? The only reason other burn cards were legal is due to reasons such as Lava Golem getting summoned to the opponent's field (and being directly comparable to Blue-Eyes and Black Luster Soldier stat-wise), thus allowing them to use it against you if you don't have any protection.
