This was such a great video! Firstly I appreciate you didn't have that Fish-era bias that a lot of people had, and you were so objective with all the albums. I personally prefer H's voice, style and albums so much more. Your list was great and you presented it really well - with really nice insight and objective thoughts on each album. I'm looking forward to seeing what else you have on your channel :)

Steve Hogarth's emotive, beautiful, voice blows Fish out of the water. I also love the symphonic nature of Marillion...after Fish. I love both Marillion's but to me...the present line-up is my preferred.

Excellent review mate. I have just rediscovered the majestically magnificent band Marillion. I loved and still do the first 4 albums with Fish, each one a classic in its own right and subsequently followed Fish on his solo career. I remember back in the day buying Seasons end and Holidays in Eden and thinking wow this is different but still pretty good, then life got in the way and they dropped off my radar. Just done a 2 month tour of India and then a week in “jail” on returning home to Jakarta, Indonesia and I downloaded all the remaining albums on Spotify and basically have not been able to stop listening to them.... I am indeed mad with myself that I denied myself these magnificent albums over the past almost 30 years.... Hogarth lyrics and performance as a vocalist is nothing short of magnificent and the chemistry with the rest of the band is stunning. The textures and depths of lyric, keyboards, Rothery’s guitar and the bass/ drum support is a joy to behold!!! On the cusp of displacing my all time favorite band Blue Oyster Cult.... Agree Afraid of Sunlight, Marbles and Fear are superb albums, as is Seasons End and the classic first 4, I still love Script and indeed just watched an emotionally charged H singing this.... breathtaking. Need to absorb more of the other dozen or so offerings now.....

Thanks for that, always interesting to hear other's ratings. No point disagreeing, everyone who actually clicks on this will know there are 17 albums here that are all well worth listening to. Just to say, for me, the two I'd have to put close or at the top are Marbles (partly because it was the album that switched me back on to Marillion after a very long gap) and This Strange Engine. I hear what your saying about the style of that album, but I like the folkiness, and any album that starts with "Man of a Thousand Voices", ends with "This Strange Engine" and has "Estonia" somewhere in between has got to brilliant. You could just cut it down to those three tracks and it would still be a wonderful album (and I happen to like the other tracks too).

@@gurgisjones1120 interesting..I'm on many of the fan boards, and it's not unusual at all to see those albums listed in those spots. Personally, they sound quite dated to me, and were not nearly as unique as what would come after them. It would be awesome to have a poll with Marillion fans ranking each album. Each person ranking the albums in order and see which one comes out on top. Certain masterpieces will certainly rank high on everyone's list. I love both versions of Marillion but personally....the Steve Hogarth era is my favorite. The songs are more epic, symphonic, almost theatrical and that's where H's gorgeous voice shines through.

My favorite band! Always hard to do a ranking of the albums, I get obsessed with an album of theirs and then listen to it over and over until I get tired of it and then another becomes my favorite... but my top pick always remains (and I must be the only fan to rank this no 1!) Anoraknophobia. I just love that album, the songs, the vibe, the mix of pop, rock and atmospheric songs, everything works for me. Second would probably be Sounds That Can't Be Made, and then it becomes harder to rank. Brave, Marbles, Afraid Of Sunlight are all equally great.

Some of Marillion's music I really like, but because their music is so varied I don't think there's a single album that I really like all the way through. And sometimes, with their longer songs, there are even parts of songs that I skip through. The song This Strange Engine, I find the intro to be boringly plogging and the end to be a screaming mess, but the stuff in the middle to be wonderful. I've actually done my own audio edits of some of the longer songs to cut out the bits I don't like. The song Sounds That Can't Made, my version starts just before the synth solo as I find the first half to be dull but the 2nd half great. And yet, Gaza is one of the few long Marillion songs I feel happy to listen to all the way through.

I personally don’t find This Strange Engine boring or a mess to me it works but I know what you mean about skipping some parts of songs, but when I see those overly long songs live it just works I prefer those skippable songs played live and feel there’s no need for any skipping apart from interior Lulu I wish Marillion would just skip that song completely

I have grown to love Marillion wouldn't like to rate them as it depends so much on my mood. I do love Brave especially the 5.1 mix, Marbles, Afraid of Sunlight is brilliant, Season's End, Sounds that Can't be made, FEAR. All of them are great though. Not so keen on Fish era, for me they were nothing more than a Genesis rip off, however, Misplaced Childhood showed a bit of promise but still too much like Genesis with Floyd touches but too derivative. Clutching at Straws showed more promise and the only one of that era I listen to quite a lot. Their first album especially sounds like Peter Gabriel era Genesis and single with Grendel is a Suppers Ready rip off, same time signatures and even a similar ending, it's just copying. H is a much better vocalist, emotional and original. Marillion for me are now a great band, possibly the best. The best thing that happened to them was Fish leaving.

@@RockersBeerReview I'm old and had been a big fan of Genesis, I remember buying Foxtrot, then Selling England by the Pound on release. So for me Fish era Marillion was just copying. I didn't get into them properly until Brave. My love has only really grown over the last few years. Now they're aren't many days go by without listening to at least one of their albums. If you'd have asked me twenty years ago, I wouldn't have thought they would ever become one of my favourite bands, how very different they are now. I really like Marillion.com and Anoraknophobia for the experimentation but Brave was the first album I loved. I've been listening to Happiness is the Road a lot lately, the more I listen to it, the more I'm loving it, usually play both parts together as one album, it works well that way. Lovely atmosphere on volume 1, followed by excitement on volume 2. Maybe, at the moment it's between Brave, Afraid of Sunlight, Marbles and FEAR which would be their best but I couldn't decide.

If there was a button that could blow raspberries i'd be banging it like crazy! Your bias towards Hogarth shines through, Fugazi and Script are superb albums, and a damn site better than the recent lft music.

I love both eras of Marillion but fish was only there a short time and 4 albums whereas Steve Hogarth has made nearly 4x as many albums and as a great band the bias will always be on his output.

Had to stop watching and nit waste time from the moment you ranked # 13 the album Script for Jester's tears. Obviously your ranking is biased.

This ranking is a joke. Script is the best album they've ever made. Afraid of Sunlight first? With that bullcrap song Beautiful they even ashamed Celine Dion with this one. Gimme a break. 1. Script for a Jester's Tear (2CD ver with 19 minute long Grendel (Fair Deal Studio), their best song ever) 2. Fugazi 3. Misplaced Childhood 4. Clutching at Straws 5. Holidays in Eden (the most honest album with H, who's just a pop singer) 6. Seasons End (for the music) 7. Radiation (for the atmosphere) 8. Brave (cos you gotta be brave coming up with something like this) 9. Marbles (my gf likes it, that's all) 10. Anoraknophobia (for a brief guitar solo in Map of the World) and forget the rest

@@RockersBeerReview Hogarth is not a rock singer, they made a bad choice at the time, now it really doesn't matter. I like dark Marillion about love and lust, about sleeping pills crashed on the floor. This is the real Marillion. They should have changed their name at least.

I'm a huge fan of Marillion/Fish era. You have to realise what each album did represented on their time, masterpiece misplaced childhood was consider one of the best albums by mídia in 1985 and one of the best concept albums ever. And then in 1987 Marillian came up with clutching at straws which I consider the best rock album ever. Unfortunately Fish left, Steve Hogarth joined Marillian but his vocals did not work for me. Saying that, I do not agree with that list at all. Top four albums are The script, Fugazi, misplaced and clutching, on that order. Marillian with Steve Hogarth sounds a kind of boring, sorry it's my opinion, no one cares, I know...

I lost interest in checking your ranking as soon as you ranked 13th Marillion debut album Script for a Jester's Tear. The rest of the Fish era is also very low ranked. This is very disrespectful for such a great band in their origins. Unfortunately in all these bunch of years with Hogarth they have lost identity, personality and authenticity, they have had only flashes with some great songs of the great band they were back in their origins. Even their Marillion logo has lost its identity since the second album in the Hoghart era.
