This is Marillion's 2015 Record Store Day vinyl release, Grendel, originally from 1983.
Note: This is a picture disc, and I had to process it quite extensively to get rid of most of the background noise a picture disc makes.
CD: DRx - Not in database
Vinyl: DR12
dr.loudness-war.info/album/vie...
Gear: VPI ClassicII, Benz LPS, Accuphase C2120-AD30, Arturia AudioFuse.
Enjoy, and buy the artist's album!

@@normansgarden6271 maybe ,,,,but as a totally different band,,Fish's lyrics are way to personal to be believably song by others , nothing against ' H ' ( kinda pretentious , but it's your trip ) But he didn't live those songs, yeah they were at a crossroads musically as happens , different personalities growing , maturing ect, k move on, with Floyd yeah Waters left and nothing against Gilmour , brilliant musician, but they were not Floyd albums anymore ,good work but not floyd, I dont know if you have seen Marillion with Fish but live... H ,,,,LOL.....cannot do them, his stuff yeah excellent , so did he bring new life? yeah on CD not live, novice fans that may be fine, but us diemhard nut fans no,,,just liken Genseis isn't Genesis without Peter. Purple without Gillian nope, Rainbow without Dio nope, Yes without Andersan ,,maybe ,but changing singers especially ones with iconic personalities and voices 9 out 10 does not work , but hopefully we as people have grown to respect other people music tastes . the Sabbath Zeppelin stupid war I grew is long over and we all can just enjoy our own tastes and let others ,,,,,respect

In Switzerland, in the eighties, they were really famous, a big number! They toured often, and visited more often than Genesis, and the people loved their lyrics...better than Phil Collins even! And the music was so professional and progressive, so they put them often on radio stations with a lot air play! FISH became a huge name, many that didn't used to listen to prog rock, had to admit how good he and the band were...Grendel is another masterpiece of them, between a lot good early records, I still like to hear them after that long time...its true, good music don't rust or get dusty...still fresh and actually because of the good songwriting...i am a fan of Fish...he was the soul of the band🤩😂🎶🎸🎹🌟🌠🌟🎵😜✌️

@@henrikfalkenfleth5321 Yes, unfortunately that is a fact. They lost the spirit, heart and the voice. Changed to pop rock that don't hurt anyone. Like they had no teeth, somehow. Compared to Tra la la rock bands still supportable, but if you loved Marillion, that's not enough. Fish was a poet, with a message. That's it! Prefer the classics, they work better for my taste. Back in the day this song was shouted for at every single Marillion gig...and never played! Saw them at Nostell Priory in 1982. First on the stage with Jethro Tull headlining. By 1985 they were headlining at Castle Donington and Jethro Tull were way down the bill with T-shirts saying "we're in a field in Nottinghamshire but we're not telling anyone..." In between, lots of gigs all around, including Nottingham, Sheffield etc. etc. Then Fish left and I never saw them again. I did see Fish at Sheffield Crucible though. You can hear on this why they got rid of Mick Pointer.

Wonderful epic stuff! One of the most ambitious prog songs ever. Too bad it wasn't released in any Marillion's studio album but only on the «B'sides Themselves» compilation. The only flaw is that the song is too reminiscent of «Supper's Ready» by Genesis, particulary during its martial section (near 13 minutes).

Oh yes. I am not perpetuating this myth at all. They are two different bands and to be enjoyed on their separate terms, but ever since Grendel people have dismissed Marillion for being a Genesis clone, and as we were talking about, Grendel seems to be the cause of it.

@OsvaldoManso
@OsvaldoManso 4 жыл бұрын
@@michaelpugh4894 I love both bands and for me they are indeed very different. However, Marillion was obviously influenced by Genesis and there's nothing wrong with it (on the contrary). In «Grendel» specifically, I find the "martial section" at around 13:50 very similar to "Apocalypse in 9/8 (Co-Starring the Delicious Talents of Gabble Ratchet)" from «Supper's Ready». Other song that always reminds me of Genesis is «Script for a Jester's Tear» (a personal favourite), but only in the beggining. When Fish starts singing a capella "So here I am once more..." I always remember that 10 years early, in «Dancing With the Moonlit Knight» (also the first track from «Selling England by the Pound», as «Script» is) Gabriel started singing a capella "Can you tell me where my country lies..." Lead singers have also things in common - they both are very charismatic (I'm talking about Gabriel and Fish, not Collins and Hogarth) with a sense of drama and theatre. But overall they are very different - Genesis are much more folky and soft (although they could rock hard like in «The Knife» or «The Return of the Giant Hogweed»), Marillion sound darker and harder most of the times (although they could make beautiful ballads, like «Lavender» or «Sugar Mice»). The good thing is we can enjoy both. The bad thing is they are not around anymore at least as they used to be.

This is actually a demo. But many swear by this demo version instead of the version released on the EP. So much in fact that the demo got its own RSD release, this record.

beautiful, but still they had to find their mature true voice: some parts (the central one in particular) is embarrassingly derivative (Genesis). They grew up to be a nice band, saw them live for the Season's End tour, and Fish solo in the same year. One of my favourite prog bands
