Marilyn Manson or Bloodhound Gang Trivia Part 2

It's time once again for a celebration in sleaze! Why it’s Marilyn Manson or Bloodhound Gang! Two influential 90’s bands with wildly different music styles. Mike, sadly, has encyclopedic knowledge of the inventive, funny and often dark lyrics of Brian Warner and James Franks (aka Marilyn Manson and Jimmy Pop) What should he do with this knowledge? Of course he's going to torture his friends Rich and Jay for sad clicks on KZbin. Well, actually if we wanted sad clicks on KZbin there’s plenty of other things we could do. This is just an afternoon of laughs had by three middle-aged gentlemen in a cold Milwaukee warehouse (how many times have you heard THAT?) While Manson skews darker, and Bloodhound gang is more goofy - if you had a Venn diagram displaying lyrical topics there would be a narrow intersection. Same goes for style. Manson will occasionally dip into the absurd or silly and Franks can occasionally go darker. This makes these two musical icons perfect for trivia! Rich Evans tends to play things safe by attempting to identify the “silly” lyrics while Jay plays it smart and thinks about context and how each line is written, all the while daftly looking for clues in the words that could give away the author. But Mike picks lines carefully. How will these two titans of warehouse trivia measure up this time under the hosting of the sneaky, miserly, disgusting, embarrassing, rude, and demeaning Mike? I met Manson once after a show in Glasgow, in like, I wanna say... 2017 maybe? He came out and was signing merch and some Scottish girl screamed at him 'Manson, you fat bastard!' and then just turned and left. We had to wait like two hours for him to come out, she'd been waiting with us the whole time, all just to insult him. It was fucking brilliant.

We got caught in a crush trying to get a shirt signed and I had to actually lift up my partner and carry her out, like it was really rough, and I guess Manson thought I was trying to lift her over the barrier cause he freaked out and him and his security guy started barking at us, so I tried to tell them 'no we're stuck we can't move' and he was just like 'oh okay' and went back to signing shirts, but we were still stuck and stayed stuck for like thirty minutes, in the freezing cold, in winter, in Glasgow. I know he's not responsible for the crowd, I don't wanna sound whiny, but I feel like it was kinda irresponsible to just watch people get crushed against a fence and not even try to help, you know?

I mean I liked his music well enough but I came to it pretty late, so he was never the 'voice of the estranged outsider' for me like he was to so many others. My partner however was a hardcore fan, she'd gotten into his stuff in high school, and she took the news of his abusive behaviour pretty hard. She felt disgusted for a long time afterwards, that she'd bought all of his albums, been to his shows, etc. She hasn't listened to a single one of his songs since.

Now I've never really listened to Bloodhound Gang, but today at work it was playing on the radio. One of my colleagues asks me if I know what it is, and first I had to say no. Most of those are pretty easy: the Bloodhound gang are about fun and tongue in cheek (or anywhere else), while Manson is just a sick, sick puppy.

Manson gets pretty tongue-in-cheek too, but it's not what he's known for. Marilyn manson as a band is quite literally a parody - but it tends to oscillate between edgy dark humor and serious philosophy & criticism. Jumping back and forth between lines like: "I wanna die young, sell my soul Use up all your drugs, make me cum Yesterday man, i was a nihilist Not today I'm just too fucking bored" And "I am so all-american that I'll sell you suicide, I am totalitarian, I've got abortions in my eyes" Or another example, releasing a song that's essentially a master's thesis on neitzschean philosophy in the same set as singing about redneck blowjobs. It's just really hard to get the full scope due to going a lot of different directions. Whereas bloodhound gang is more straight forward.
