This is a charming scene, for many reasons. First, she's not totally glammed up as she usually was, so along with the spectacular outdoor background, her realistic and natural-looking clothes make her more down-to-earth. Second, she sings an innocent and simple song, very well. Third, she's interacting with a little boy instead of an adult man. All of this is very different from the more familiar Marilyn movie appearances.

@@brendanmorin9935 I never said she shouldn't. I'm an extremely sexually expressive woman myself but when you use it specifically to jumpstart your career, you're downgrading yourself to what you can offer men. It was highly un-feminist as everything about her career was sex-appeal to the male eye. Not surprising given the time period.
@ccgrey87315 жыл бұрын
@@nette9836 But remember Marilyn was making a living for herself at a time when many woman didn't. She was an independent woman. Marilyn also started her own production company which was unusual in the 1950's. The thing is that 20th Century Fox saw her as a marketable sexpot and Marilyn wanted to succeed. It's not difficult to imagine that she felt elated by the attention and adoration of the fans after growing up with no real family and having been sent to live in an orphanage and then a series of foster homes. No one wanted to keep her and give her any stability or security. I'm sure the sexual abuse she experienced during that time also contributed to her feeling the her looks and body were all anyone wanted. But she worked hard on improving in acting and took it very seriously. In a few of her early roles Marilyn got to play against the sexy blonde type she was usually cast as. In Don't Bother to Knock, she played a character that is mentally disturbed. In Clash By Night, her character works in a cannery and rough houses with her boyfriend. Even her Paula character in How To Marry A Millionaire isn't a very sexual one. Marilyn's worst role was the popular The Seven Year Itch. Her character didn't even have a name and clearly she was highly exploited just as a sex symbol. I think Marilyn would have been much better off without being in that film. That film made it difficult for her to get different sorts of roles. But she did follow it with Bus Stop which was actually a big contrast. Sadly Marilyn was never able to play the parts she wanted.

No they didn't. She wouldn't be known as one of the greatest actresses of all time if she was underestimated. This is the problem with modern people they do not understand how Hollywood actually worked back then. I'm sorry that you want to make Hollywood out to be some monoliths as if Hollywood has always been the same as it is now where it's about corrupt douchebags telling people how to make a movie. There is a reason why most of the older directors and producers and actors and actresses always come and say that they had more freedom back then than they do today because today you're actually told that you have to be a specific way it's why audience's hate modern movies.

@EternalFlameOfGod2 ай бұрын
@@charlessoutherton8946 I agree that she definitely didn't want to play the dumb blonde character, but I would disagree with this idea that women back then ever really cared about whether they played the Damsel in distress or not. It's a modern phenomenon, only modern people say that women back then were complaining about not being able to play the hero. Women back then just wanted to tell good stories, Doris Day is famous for literally saying "I just want to make people laugh and cry like a good actress.". I do apologize if you feel like I insulted your intelligence. But there is absolutely a difference between old Hollywood and new Hollywood and it's not even close. Most old school actors and actresses had fun today people are depressed.

Kind of agree although its rumored that John Kennedy asked to be introduced to her with I'm guessing an idea of her immediate attraction to him and power... His only intention was to take advantage of her. She somehow also became involved with Robert. Marilyn wasn't a total loner, she had friends who took her in and let her live with them as family and she was close to her half-sister (same mother) ... yet it seems she felt so alone. Lastly, Marilyn had a power that the u.s. gov wasn't happy with her having, she was the most popular and therefore most influential person in the u.s. at that time, which made her 'dangerous' especially by today's standards, no entertainer is allowed to become single-handedly as influential these days ...

My mother took me to see this movie when I was a little girl. It made a great impression on me. I kept singing the theme song about the river of no return while I reenacted her scenes in our basement. The Misfits with Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe is quite memorable. The scene where Marilyn Monroe bounces the rubber ball connected to the paddleboard was another scene I tried to reenact as a nine year old. I believe that was Clark Gable’s last movie. Mom also took me to see the memorable movie Niagara with Joseph Cotton and Marilyn Monroe. Thank you mom for introducing me to the world of cinema. Thank you Marilyn for your wonderful contribution to the arts.

She legally changed her name to Marilyn Monroe on February 23rd, 1956, so I guess she ended up identifying more as Marilyn Monroe.

This is the first movie I saw as a 5 year old kid at the drive in back in the 50’s.Its been my favorite movie of all time.I know it’s just a B western but when I saw her up on that giant screen for the first time even as a kid I couldn’t believe how beautiful she was.I love her singing.I think the Hollywood studios missed out on her singing ability they were to busy trying to make her look like the dumb blonde.I wish she would have made a lot more records back in the 50’s.I really thought when she recorded Kiss from Niagara that it should have been big on the radio but the studio did not promote it.The good lord definitely broke the mold after he made her.There is no woman in Hollywood that has ever come close to her.Never will either.

She suits the denim cowgirl look so much :) She was a good actress and naturally pretty before fame ....she didnt need the eye lifts and the nose/jawline surgeries ...makes me sad whether she felt she needed them or was coerced into having them.

NeoScota Oh please! I hate the silly stories that biographers made up. Half the surgeries she supposedly had didn't even exist when she was alive! The x-rays someone produced saying it was proof of MM's, surgeries had another woman's name on them. There's literally NO PROOF she ever had any work done, only rumors... repeated again and again and again. Sigh.
@whiteeaglewarrior3 жыл бұрын
@@Father-Nature I was a nurse in surgery and theatres, and can see she had work done. No doubt put under pressure from the film bosses.

@@whiteeaglewarrior Oh, you can "see" can you?! Thank you for your professional opinion on someone you've never met yet alone even examined close up! I thought someone in your profession would prefer EVIDENCE rather than salacious conjecture from gossipy biographers. Side by side her Norma Jean pics look the same as MM ones aside from make up, hair and lighting.
