Hi folks! Thanks heaps Charlie for reviewing my video, much appreciated. First off apologies for the multiple domains not working - my main website is actually my drum lesson website for the last 15 years - www.icanplaydrums.com. www.jackbennett.com.au was randomly down but now up, and hanzenfeet.com doesn't exist anymore because, well - too many websites! I moved all my Hanzen Feet vids into a separate playlist on my youtube channel. OK let me try and answer some of your questions! The location of the video is the 12 Apostles in Victoria, Australia. I've had a fascination with filming drums/perc outdoors for the last decade, if you're interested in seeing drums in the snow, or Europe or whatever, check www.jackbennett.com.au/outdoors . Filming outdoors is a lot of fun but takes an extortionate amount of time to setup and packup! The only filming crew is my wife (if you pause at 2.18 you can see her over my right shoulder, flying the drone lol), and we basically do between 10-15 takes of the tune, resetting the camera positions each time, so that tripods aren't in any of the shots. Everything is filmed to a click, coming out of the blue UE boom you can see sitting under the treble keys on the frame. Later I re record the audio in protools back in my studio (the audio from the cameras is horrible, lots of wind that is impossible to remove without distorting everything else). From there I just line the audio up with the video in post production, and kapow! Editing time. The instrument! OK I have since sold this and bought a commercial 4.3 Adams, but at the time I really wanted a 5 octave, but didn't have a spare $25k sitting around. So I got www.marimbaaustralia.com to build be one for about $5 - $6k-ish. As we know 5 octaves are seriously long, and the only room it fits in is my studio which is heavily carpeted (because I film a lot of drums), so the sound is very dead and doesn't really do the instrument justice. Really the only way I could get it to sound decent was to drench it in reverb, which kind of suits the outdoors vibe of the video.. but yeah, that's the best I could do in the situation. The bars are purple heart, a decent alternative to padouk, but certainly no where near as good as rosewood (which is really difficult to come by these days, especially for a boutique builder). I hope this answers most of your questions, anything else just let me know! Thanks again Charlie, love the channel!

I feel like perhaps a little more lift on the strokes might help the sound? He seems to keep his mallet heads low by default. Yeah, I recognized the Australian coastline almost immediately. Large parts of our coast look somewhat similar; eroded sandstone cliffs and headlands, punctuated by sandy coves or beaches of varying size. Definitely beautiful. The coast stretching south of Syndey, down past Woollongong is great. We have a LOT of coastline here!

Did anyone else notice that the marimba didn’t have wheels. It has to be assembled exactly where you will play it.

my teacher told me that in over the rainbow all the gongs on the walls made the marimba sound like that so you don't actually need microphones. and there could always be a mic attached to the marimba or out of the frame above the board

Holy shit, I just looked up an interview with him. Literally all my friends say PUURT (like hurt). But it's apparently PEERT like Peer? Holy shit, I've been saying it wrong for 20 years. Well, I'll just chalk that up to my virginia accent I guess :)

Not gonna lie, for the amount of gear there is a very underwhelming and anti climactic performance and it’s a shame he had to choose such an irritating pop song

@@Marimbalogy the performance is good. But still I'm not a fan of easy pop music, and whenever I heard some kind of pop music on marimba it gets in my nerves. Than spending time playing an ostinato meanwhile I play a pop tune on the marimba it's just a huge waste of time. But that's my opinion.

@@andreapedron4163 Personally, I would be hesitant to tell someone else how to enjoy making music. At the end of the day, you need to do what makes you happy. If this guy is happy playing pop songs and drum set at the same time (which by the way, is by no means easy) then good for him. If you're happy playing Sirocco, then more power to ya!
