I think Marina is the type of artist who really masters their craft, she has combined her strenghts and made this record. I remember one interview in which she mentioned she can't belt like most pop female artists, instead she reinforces a really unique timbre and she's really confident on her lower/middle notes and falsetos/"lyrical" aproach (vowel shapes and melismas, etc). This record has surprised me as much as Froot. I also love the fact there's lot of guitars (which is very trendy and she knows that, a recored based only on this 70/80s sound trend would be boring cause I think this is kind of over) plus insane bass lines. The lyrics are deep but also funny, she doesn't take herself so serious, which is really necessary for a pop record imo. Favs: Venus Fly Trap, I love you but I love me more and New America.

I'm probably biased because I'm such a huge fan of Marina's music but I love this album a lot. I thought the highlights (Purge the Poison, Ancient Dreams, Venus Fly Trap) were so great they overshadowed the weaker parts of the album (Flowers, Goodbye). Tho I definitely get your criticism, I'm just more lenient because of how much I enjoy the singles.
