@@Cuzjudd I was a little misguided in my youth. Not a lot, but a little. That was enough for me to repent from my sins and everything blabla you know that story. So, instead of being an "antifacist", left wing radical, powerdrunk football wannabe hooligan and graffiti sprayer, i tried to connect with other people. I wanted to get to know strangers that are different, more "normal" and everything... so yeah i got to know Sara and she had like everything I wanted. It was the perfect match. Also she was looking for a little bad boy. She showed me Marina's songs that was right when FROOT dropped. I fell in love and two years later i think even visited her show in hamburg with a friend of mine. And it was so beautiful, the change that happened with me. But sara, she was getting cold feet. All the dreams she shared with me, the stories we read together that matched us so perfectly, was nothing but smoke and mirrors. She went with the easy catch, a regular guy with a rich father and everything.. at some point i realised why I used to seperate myself from society so much. Why i ran with the outlaws and hated ones. Whatever, he found his bitch in her ;) and the king of the jungle called her bluff, and he didnt even want to put his money where her mouth was. I feel like in a lot of ways L+F was sort of needed reset for MARINA. It was a great album, however I can tell that the album wasn’t made for anyone else but her. Which can be a great thing as an artist to do but at the end of the day, I feel like these new songs+music videos have a much broader appeal and I love the fun, campy and vintage vibes I get from it. It feels like what you would get if you combined her previous 4 albums together and it makes me happy in the inside because it’s taking everything that was good and putting it together.

This music video is so smart when you dissect it -the monster represents fame/hollywood etc -the 60s look is family jewels era marina, she’s fresh faced and playing with it/posing for it kind of naively. she’s got her confidence and sass but the monster is still trying to “own” her. although she feels she has creative control she’s still performing for it -diner film star is electra heart. she’s still dropping hints of sass (evident by the shirt) but she’s dressed the part. EH was heavily studio controlled, we know this. Marina had less creative control. still her personality could not be entirely hidden and moulded by studio -green 80s film set is FROOT. Marina had complete creative control over this era, she’s running from Hollywood now. She doesn’t want fame, she just wants freedom and control over her own life. -THEN SHE BLOWS HOLLYWOOD UP ALTOGETHER. Marina has never cared about fame. For a time in her ambitious youth she thought maybe that’s what she needed to strive for to have the freedom to create, but in the process of feeding the monster she began to lose herself. She ran back toward herself, she said “fuck fame, this is me and you can’t change or own me. I’m doing things my way now”

I feel like the different sets are the different Marina eras. The one where she's running away from the monster, she's dressed more casual and appears younger, TFJ era. The monster being the industry, she rejects it and hides from it. The other set, where she's dressed like in the 50's/60's, and the monster is taking her pictures, represents Electra Heart. Her embracing the industry and letting herself be a product on TV. Then the scene where she's in a diner in the dark represents Love + Fear and, mostly, Froot (since the lighitng and look are very similar to the ones used in the Froot music video). Here she's in the dark, putting out content in a more intimate/lowkey way, not letting herself be persuaded by the industry and making more inner-focused music. The last one, where she comes in dressed in black and blowing up Hollywood represent Acient Dreams in a Modern Land. Now she's loud and bold, more out there, and wants to break down/burn down the industry with her lyrics and music.
@lumpyspacepeebs21843 жыл бұрын
Also at 1:25 : "I got the beauty" focuses on the 60's set, Electra Heart, which had themes of youth and being beautiful, since it was about female stereotypes. "Got the brains" focuses on the diner set, Froot and L+F, which have more thoughtful and complex lyrics. "Got the power" focuses on the green light set, TFJ, her younger self, who felt angrier and thus more powerful with her critical music. "Hold the reins" focuses on the monster, the industry which holds the reins to everything she put out in those eras whether she liked it or not.

I swear to god I've listen to Marina since "The Family Jewels" came out when I was 10 and then "Electra Heart" came out in my first year of middle school. I've loved her ever since. She truly has found her sound and message and its fucking incredible. Marina has always been a good lyricist, but in her most recent albums she become an AMAZING lyricist. She calls out the world and the media in a way that needs to be done. Take Billie Elish for example; no hate to her I enjoy her music, however Billie tries to call out the world in her music and it just doesn't come across well. Marina does it beautifully. I mean even down to the "Harvey Weinstein Gone to Jail" shirt she knows what she is doing and what she wants to say. Some artists get 2 or 3 successful albums and then stop putting effort into their music and just know they will still make money anyways. But Marina has only gotten better and continues to raise the bar for her self, she surpasses it every single time! She doesn't just meet our expectations, she goes far beyond them. I could also go on and on about the cinematography in her most recent music videos. I cannot wait to see what else she has in store for us!
