Here we go... I've done it! After several requests over the last year, I have finally reacted to DEEP BLUE SEA! It is, without a doubt, an entertaining movie, but what about the science behind it? Well... you can imagine.

Sphere might be a good one - set in an undersea lab. Get to see sea snakes, jellyfish, and squid and the characters talk about what behaviors are normal for those creatures or not. You could talk about whether or not they are correct. Like, one character says sea snakes only bite at nighttime (which seems like it wouldn't even matter when they are in the dark ocean depths).

Oddly enough, while I have a completely unreasonable fear of sharks (if I'm swimming in any water with my eyes closed and think of them, I'll semi-freak and need to open my eyes to see they're not there), I have long been in favor of shark conservation efforts. So thank you for balancing the fiction with fact. I never forgot a woman I knew from Bermuda telling me how sharks don't really attack if they're full. She said that because of their fishing laws, any sharks that got close to where people swam were full, and so swimmers would exit the water but not panic. When a giant ray came close to shore, however, it was much more dangerous and volatile. And larger, from what she said. This really struck me as counter to our vision of sharks as endlessly hungry and ever-aggressive.

It always makes me sad when people refer to sharks as "killing machines". They only kill what they eat, unlike the real killing machines, humans.
@Bluetrekkie
@Bluetrekkie 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like that’s what this movie is trying to say though. They mention quite a few times that sharks are not naturally aggressive killing machines. But humans have selfishly modified them to become killing machines for their own personal gain, even breaking ethical laws to do so. Whilst the science is definitely fantastical, I don’t think it depicts sharks negatively at all.
@jacoblofthus7908

Sharks are killing machines in the sense that they need to do it to survive and that they're good at it, but not in taking pleasure in the act.

I think it is said in the movie that the facility was a supply base for german submarines in WWII. This is also one of my favorite underwater movies, and as such I tried to recreate this base in SUBNAUTICA. I looked in all the scenes info about how it would look underwater but it was impossible to get an exact replica, considering the game doesn't have buildings of the same geometry shape as those from the movie. With Subnautica BELOW ZERO however, it might be more possible due to the large room. You should do breakdown of "Sphere" also with Samuel L Jackson, Emma Stone and Dustin Hoffman, which is an underwater movie. And while you are at it, might as well do "The Abyss" with Ed Harris, and perhaps "The Big Blue" with Jean Reno.

I also see sharks as just animals and not human exterminators or predator monsters. They prey on other animals, and are prey of other animals... I think Orcas or other sharks. By the way, the bad ass guy in the movie makes another bad ass role in The Expanse (sci fi space series).

I feel like they’re not really used that way in this movie. When touching shark skin it's fine as long as you do it slowly and you're moving your hand in the dirrection of snout to tail. The overlap of the placoid scale pattern makes this dirrection more smooth whereas if you move tail to snout you will be hitting the edges of the scale and this is what can hurt or cut your hand. If you go to a shark touch pool like the ones at the NYC aquarium it's fine to touch the sharks. And if you touch them gently and slowly even moving in the tail to snout direction isn't likely to cut your hand it will just feel a bit rough.

This is the movie that really sent my irrational fear of sharks into hyperdrive when I was like 12 years old. Now, almost 20 years later, I still can't even jump into a swimming pool without thinking about sharks (or cold Norwegian waters where no large sharks (perhaps except the rare basking shark) would ever visit). I've even experienced times where I've gotten anxious closing my eyes in a bathtub. To be fair, I had a fear of whales when I was perhaps 5 years old, so can't solely blame this movie, but it certainly did a good job portraying sharks as nothing but unstoppable killing machines. I really love sharks in principle, but hard to get rid of the fear instilled by demonization such as this.
@Spr1ggan87

I saw Jaws at 5 years old, i still can't swim at 35 years old due to having the same issues you described and have only taken showers as i can't sit in the bath without seeing that unholy face with soulless black eyes and open mouth in my head. It's funny though that we're both from northern territories (I'm from Scotland) where these fish don't live.
@edwardv1255
@edwardv1255 11 ай бұрын
@@Spr1ggan87 (I accidentally wrote a short autobiography) I feel you, man. Through challenging myself, I've improved a bit recently. Even managed to swim in the Mediterranean sea on vacation this summer, albeit in one meter deep water, staying close to other bathers. I can also swim in deep fresh water in Norway, but I'm literally constantly think about sharks while doing so, actively trying to stay calm as to not look like a fish/seal in distress. I also happen to have a fear of flying (though less severe), and swimming gives me a similar feeling to take-off and landing; it feels like I'm seriously risking my life, putting it in the hands of fate, so all I can do is try to repress the fight-or-flight instinct. A lot of things are changing as my son is growing up (5yo atm), and I'm striving not to transfer my irrational fear over to him, which gives me some incentive to work through it. But it really feels like trying to overcome a real traumatic experience.

I think it would be hard selling a movie named Cows, although these deadly creatures kill around 20 people each year in the US alone. Jaws was made in the 70s and there wasnt enough good knowledge about them back then. Sadly, of course. That stigma is hard to loose nowadays. Although I tend to think that with much more educational programs it still can be shifted round and luckily many people are doing a great job in creating better understanding.

I loved this movie when I was a teen. I watched it a few years ago and I thought it was pretty bad, but what I really disliked about it, is how it vilifies sharks. I had experiences with wild sharks and dolphins. Sharks are scary. I noticed I had a big one close when I was swimming "far" from the beach when I was a kid. I almost had a heart attack when I noticed there was a huge fish close to me (it was actually small, less than one meter probably but for a kid it looked huge). I never went alone to swim again, which pleased my mother. But the shark did nothing against me. Very, very silently, it ignored me. It was like a torpedo, it disappeared incredibly fast. My experiences with dolphins are much worse. I was in a boat and they appeared... and started jumping around. The boat almost sank. If they fell over me, they would have killed me. Those things are truly dangerous. They are crazy, they don't know limits. RESPECT MY BUBBLE FREAKING CETACEAN

I have some suggestions for the next movie." USS indianapolis:men of courage". It is based on a real story, usa cruiser was sunk during ww2. A lot of people were attacked by sharks and died. Today sharks are not so dangerous, maybe their behavior changed? For example, wolfs at europe or at usa or canada are not very dangerous, because they live near humans. At Russia wolfs are very dangerous, they attack children and women, pack of them can kill young bear. now people hunt sharks and because of it they started to fear humans... Also "in the heart of the sea" is very good, it is based on Melville's classic. And i personally like the "terror" tv series, but it is more about polar animals.

@@Seamemaria "in the heart of the sea" is best as movie(from those i mentioned), from cinematography position. But it is not pure entertainment, very dramatic(cannibalism), mysterious story of white whale and the ship. @@Seamemaria it was a little comedic thing cartoon network did a long time ago. they had little clips they would play at commercial breaks. I think it was kinda mocking a discovery show at the time where they would do a theoretical animal vs animal thing and build robots to simulate bite force etc. I just remember one of the segments one of the people responded "I think the shark would win because they dont have any bones they are all cartilage" and the narrator inserts "cartilage is a science word"

I dont know why my mother made us both watch this when i was 6-7 years old, i reckon she was expecting it to be "family friendly" despite it being a 15. Since then thats when shark movies scared me. Looking back i see how silly they are now, and i havent made myself watch any recent ones like The Meg. I do actually like sharks. I liked seeing Steve Backshall get out of a shark cage to swim out with a calm Great White Shark. Its shows they arent there to attack us, and actually dont seem to find us that tasty to eat. It makes me sad with the shark populations declining, when they are an important part of the ecosystem. :(

this may come across as shocking to many others, but there are plenty of sea creatures including sharks that are intelligent. they should not be treated brutally. and yes, one of the most stupidest things [ according to shark that I talked to recently ] is a shark bashing against, in and through a boat just to get humans. According to this shark I talked to, only the rogue sharks that have been chewing on too many strange plants in the bottom, act this way. Sharks want an easy to hunt prey. they don't want to get band aids on their nose just to get a meal.

If the events in the movie were true, I assume they would be funded by those who were going to manufacture the drug without making reference to how they developed it. She was fanatical enough, perhaps not to care about peer review process and her reputation but rather just defeating the disease was her obsession. She seemed uncharacteristically stupid to "bait" the shark in the end by throwing herself into an unescapable situation instead of dangling her legs.

If someone would say to me "XX is the oldest creature on earth" I would not believe him/her. My go to answer would be some prokaryote, single-cellular organism. The term "creature" itself is also kinda vague tbh. ^^ Also, just imagine this film using a greenland shark. Slowest chase scenes ever! XD

I would have loved seeing a Greenland shark in this movie, as long as they don't vilify them too, cause they are awesome! And you are right. Probably the first lifeforms to have appeared were single celled-organisms.

Well, at the beginning, the shark was banging on the boat to get some ibuprofen for its headache from butting another boat. I have been swimming with sharks, although initially I didn't realize it until one brushed my leg. Looked to be a mako and well, a size that I've eaten before - it couldn't begin to try to eat me on a bet, were sharks a betting sort. I do have a policy though, if it's killed for food, all of it is to be used. Wasting it is disrespectful to the life taken for food. Still, I far prefer fish like grouper for a meal or ten. Like I said, all of it or leave it alone. Just like my enjoying scrapple, (A Pennsylvania "Dutch" food ("Dutch" being a corruption of Deutsch, who immigrated after the devastation of the 30 years' war and some significant numbers participated in our Revolutionary war, labeled "Hessians" regardless of what region they originated from) which is pork face meat, heart and liver, plus scraps. I'll let the farmer keep the oink, the rest is food. Respect what you eat! And living in PA Dutch country now, the eating's exceptionally good!
