I know that DBS is not the best Shark movie, but now looking back at it... it's actually not that bad, it use Animatronic with little of CGI (Since there's tons of Bad CGI looking shark), the Animatronic itself wasn't bad either Yes the story is kinda cramped/since its only 1.30 hour long movie, need some more backstory for Shark modification (Maybe gen from other shark) and development for each character, the Movie did implied that Shark can't Swim backwards which it kinda tried to say these aren't normal shark (Since its genetically modified) but they could've just stick with Realism a bit more

Eve nif the laws of physics woork differently in thie universe of this movie, how did the shark know that it could do that? Sure, they're super smart, but that doesn't mean it has knowledge and a depp understanding oif phsycis. Being intelligent means that it could learn and understand physics, but it still has to learn it first.

The sharks swimming backwards was supposed to be the first clue that there was something “evolved” about the sharks. They even say in the movie when it happens that sharks can’t do that and everyone that doesn’t know about the genetic tampering seems surprised and worried at what they just saw. Now I’m not sure if any amount of “gene therapy” could actually make it possible for sharks to swim backwards but the movie does let you know that it’s something they shouldn’t be capable of under normal circumstances. I actually loved when it first happens because if you know about sharks it makes you stop and say hold on a minute something is off here. And later you find out why. Seemed a bit odd to criticize that part so heavily since it is somewhat explained .

You're absolutely right, they do reference this in the movie, although I suppose my main criticism was, like you say, gene therapy changing physical morphology. I'd get it if the gene therapy had caused them to develop additional fins that allowed backwards swimming motion.. maybe.

The characters themselves are also blown away about the sharks going backwards as it’s not possible and say it themselves, and that it must be one of the many side effects of the treatment so I don’t think this was an accident or them not doing some research at least haha

My pet peeve with movies like this is they say that the shark can now swim backwards but all it’s fins and it’s tail are completely normal for a shark so essentially the shark is so big brain that it bends reality and physics which would have made this movie so much cooler if it wasn’t just an oversight

In movie logic it makes sense, but physically sharks like Makos and Great Whites can’t swim backwards. It’d be like the movie saying that human is so smart he managed to figure out how to fly by flapping his arms.

THANK YOU for referencing the "tiger" shark being a repurposed animatronic mako. I remember being a kid seeing this in theaters and thinking "oh cool, they've got some mako-leopard shark hybrid" and then one of the characters refers to it as a "normal" tiger shark. Also, near the end of the film the CGI mako shark has nictitating membranes, which of course actual makos don't have. Always drives me nuts when I watch it again!

For the last couple of hundred years, Shark skin or shargin has been used on the handles of British Military swords. I have one that is 170 years old and the skin on the grip is still in good condition and not at all slippery in the hand.

Every time I see that scene where the sharks first swim backwards on camera and SLJ says “tell me I didn’t just see that” I’m convinced he’s talking about the sharks swimming backwards. But then he says “the sharks recognized that gun” and I’m like 🤦🏼‍♀️ But yes, Deep Blue Sea is one of my favorites. And LL Cool J and Thomas Jane were the two who definitely should have survived. Satisfying ending.

Just found your channel recently, and I've been very entertained. Great channel. Deep Blue Sea was the first shark movie I saw in the theaters. My sister was manager of a movie theater. I worked across street from it and would go over after work on preview nights. Midnight showings back then were for employees. They had to splice the reels together and watch them to make sure it was done correctly. A family friend was previewing this one, and no one wanted to watch it with him. I decided to stick around. I loved Jaws and Jaws 2, didn't like Jaws 3 or Revenge, but figured give a shark movie a shot. I didn't catch the license plate Easter egg. I did predict the Samuel L Jackson death though. He started his speech, and I turned to my friend, "hey, they always have a speech like this in a movie. It's inspirational, and gets them through it. Not saying it'll happen, he is standing somewhat close to that water though, wouldn't it be cool if a shark jumped out and got him?" "That would be funny, but no one does that in a movie like this." After it happened he looked at me, "you aren't allowed anymore 'cool' ideas during this movie." We both still jumped from it. I broke his 'cool idea' rule later in the movie. You mentioned the mama Mako death being a straight rip off of Jaws, did you notice all of them were? First shark is killed by a gas explosion (Jaws) Second shark is killed by electricity (Jaws 2) Third shark underwater explosive (Jaws 3) After the first two sharks died, I said to my friend, "they have not once mentioned underwater explosives, but they're going to find some underwater explosives and use that to kill the third shark." "They won't do that. Why would you think that?" Told him the Jaws endings, "and they're at an old WWII submarine base. They'll find some explosives, watch." When they found the explosives, he just looked at me with a "are you fucking serious" look. I still love the movie. It is so bad, but so damn entertaining. I loved sharks as a kid, Bull Sharks are my favorite, and they were followed by Makos. I was expecting the sharks to be Great Whites, and was pleasantly surprised to see them go with Makos.

Brilliant analysis i am from the era of jaws went to see it twice when it came out with my best friend who is no lo ger with us and i remember everyone jumping out of thier seats when the bead appears from the hole in the fushermans biat happy days and of course it was filmed on marthas vinyard. Love this chanel sharks are facinating animals . Why can they fit in the corridors, turn on ovens, swim backwards, stay stationary, use hunting techniques that aren't natural to this species of shark? Writers say because they're genetically modified. I say because the writers are lazy.

Way too smart. I don't care how smart any animal or human is, there are some things that they wouldn't know. Inteilligence isn't knowledge, it's more like the ability to understand and learn things. Sure the shark is super inttelligent, but it's never seen an over used before so how would it know that turning on the oven would flush LL out becfause it would get hot in there? And how would it know how to turn it on since it's never seen an over before, much less someone turning it on.

I agree with your ratings for Deep Blue Sea! I love that movie! I do love quite a few shark movies like Jaws, Deep Blue Sea, Blue Demon (it was a shark horror/sci-fi movie that was released back in 2004. It was a cheesy low budget film but Blue Demon is still one of my favorites). I've always loved sharks and shark movies. There's just something about them that has always grabbed my attention. I wish I was smart enough to go to college and become a marine biologist. I most likely won't ever get that chance. Anyway I'm glad I came across this video. I love watching shark scientists and marine biologists react or critique shark movies.

I'm only 3 minutes in and I already want to say thank you for your bit about dermal denticles - I have watched a few (more than I care to admit, lol) marine biologist movie reactions and you are the first to mention that the shark's skin IS in fact smooth in one direction. I remember learning that in marine biology years ago but literally everyone else has just said "it's like sandpaper", leaving out the directional tidbit. It's the little things in life :). (Oh, and also thank you for saying it means "skin teeth", not "tiny teeth" like someone else did....)

this underwater base of theirs would be doomed purely by design alone... it has a direct line access to the surface, while it also has underwater opening for the sub... you know, the room where samuel l jackson's character ended up shark food, that pool can only work if its perfectly sealed to maintain enough air pressure to keep the water out, but with a direct line access to the surface thru that elevator shaft, all the air in the base would be pushed out thru that shaft as the water floods in thru that pool. that room would have to be completely and perfectly sealed from the rest of the base to work, no pipes, no nothing, wires could be allowed as long as you make a perfectly airtight seal that can withstand the same pressure as the water has at that particular depth, it would have to be perfectly sealed off, the way in and out would have to be a air lock, like that you would find on a space station or space ship.

When this movie came out, it was a pretty big deal in the scary movie genre, because it was the first to do one thing...can you guess what? It was the first ro have a Black character, survive ro the end of the movie...that's right, LL Cool J made history by being the first Black actor and character, to live through the entire scary movie!

Oh my goodness! When this movie came out my little brother was like 9, I believe. My dad and I were going to see this movie, and my little brother begged us to take him too. However, My brother was scared of everything. I tried to explain to him he wouldn’t like it. But he kept begging, so my dad finally said yes. I think we were 10 mins in or so when my brother said he was going to use the restroom and he was still gone. I went to check on him and found him sitting on a bench in the theatre lobby. I asked him if he was sick or something. Nope, he was scared to death. 🤦🏽‍♀️ Refused to come back in. He didn’t sleep well for weeks, constantly having nightmares. 10 mins, he only watched 10 mins of the movie! Years later I took my family to Hawaii, for a nice family vacation. He was now like 17 years old. This boy refused to go into the ocean past his ankles. And would only swim in the hotels pool. It all stemmed back to the movie, Deep Blue. He still has an irrational fear of sharks. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Not sure if anyone noticed that the 3 sharks in Deep Blue Sea ALL 3 sharks died the same way Jaws sharks were killed in the first 3 movies! Explosion Jaws 1, Electrocution Jaws 2 and Explosion Jaws 3. I have seen this movie 100 times today was the first time I heard about license plate and Hooper from Jaws. Very cool thanks!!!!

One of the most entertaining movies of all time. Holy mother of christ I love Deep Blue Sea so goddamn much. I prefer The Shallows by just a little bit and I do prefer both that and Deep Blue Sea over Jaws. I adore Jaws but I just prefer these two. And there’s something so frightening about sharks in a hallway. Deep Blue Sea STILL being the only film to ever use this concept is just ridiculous. Complete Bollocks. And god the first 30 seconds or so of that score is sooo haunting. In my opinion it’s the best score in a shark film. And come on we all know how good that Samuel L. Jackson kill is. It’s honestly a masterclass in effective jump scares. It’s completely unexpected and it really set a new bar for jump scares. Sadly we still get truly awful jump scares in some horror films. (Side-note: the characters in the film mention that sharks can’t swim backwards. It’s a side effect of their new biological make-up and enhanced intelligence. This also goes hand in hand with why they are able to stay still, which by the way I love that they’re so smart that the massive one at the end stood still waiting to attack knowing that the other guy was going to jump in and try to save her. And maybe it also did that to make him watch her die? Anyway it’s a movie explanation but it’s a good one. It’s the same reason for their massive size. Admittedly it’s ridiculous that none of the other characters notice this and freak out when they find out that Dr. McCallister was using growth hormones on the sharks.) But yeah Deep Blue Sea is seriously great and I watch it every year.

i love marine creatures including sharks, this channel needs to grow bigger. if i may be so bold, could you make a video about shark's misconceptions and myths? you could go more in depth analysis in each and every myth.. also, i've been curious about those saving shark videos, releasing fish hooks, saving beached sharks, i mean..you could react on em and explain what should and shouldnt be done in those kind of situations..please?

I saw this film 29 years ago...and saw some scenes again last week. I agree 8/10 for entertainment I think dr. Susan felt really awful (and relieved) when she electrified a shark, in order to save herself, but pretty bitter and guilty cause she killed a shark. She almost cries when she see's it dead floating in the messy lab. Poor shark 😢. It's a touching scene ❤

This movie was a guilty pleasure for me as well. I'm mostly proud of young me figuring out that sharks moving backward looked totally wrong (I was a Discovery Channel and Nat Geo kid). And then of course as you pointed out, also the horrid lame attempt at a tiger shark. And have we ever figured out why cinema is addicted to doing shark roars? I'm really binging your channel now that I've found you (and I also have other shark films to catch up on!).

Hi Leonellus, I would safely say there are no shark species that can physically stop moving midwater column and stay completely stationary. The manta ray is one of the only species i can think of, off the top of my head that performs a somewhat "hover" motion mid water, to allow itself to be cleaned by cleanerfish. There are lots of sharks that can stay stationary however on the seafloor and pump water across their gills using their spiracles. Hope this answers your question, and please do feel free to ask as many as you'd like!

I know there was a National Geo show called Shark Wranglers about scientists catching sharks to tag them. But there are actual shark wranglers as a job. They are part of an Australian tuna fishing company that catch tuna in a circular net and tow them back to Australia live. On the trip back small sharks get into this net and these guys go inside the net and 'wrangle' them out over the top of the net instead of killing them. Watched a documentary about it. These guys are nuts!
