I served 10 years in the Swedish Military. The Marines here are supposed to be sub arctic capable and we trained annually for that. Serving in the far north with the arctic rangers changes you. It gives you perspective on how easy it is to operate when it's nice and warm. You learn to appreciate literally everything. -33C sucks and all equipment needs to be maintained DAILY to function. You have to constantly stay on the move to not freeze. You need to drink MORE water than when it's warm. You need MORE food as your body uses more calories. Even just taking a shit is a fucking mission in itself. Proud of the time I did. Love this country to death. Regards, Sgt. Runner357

@magnusm4
@magnusm4 5 ай бұрын
It's not our home turf that's the problem. Your biggest obstacle is getting past our shores. Sweden has Gotland, which has vision and control over the entire Baltic Sea. You control Gotland, you control the Baltic And sending troops by sea is very dangerous. As any infantry is vulnerable to planes and our robots. We don't have many ships. But our robots are made to sink several ships before they sink ours. So expect most casualties to arrive before any actual battle can arrive on land.

Currently doing service up at I19/A8 as a medic. Just a fun fact for those of you wondering what it is like: Last week we had temperatures down to -49°C and winds. In the cold and snow weapons stop working because of the freezing metal and changed properties of the rifle and powder inside the bullets. And worst of all, people bleed out faster in the cold. Most trauma casualties are found hypothermic and this happens even in warm temperatures. This phenomenon was actually discovered during the US time in Iraq. And when a patient is hypothermic they bleed out faster, leading to more hypothermia, leading to worse blood loss. As a medic we exercise this by being sprayed with cold water and thrown into the snow for a while before medics come and get us and let me tell you, when its -30 and you're all wet, you really do not want a war where you might end up with blood loss on top of that.

The big explosion around 9:30 was a “trumladdning” (“drum charge”), which is a linear charge designed to be pulled through pipes called “vägtrummor” (“road drums”) that are preinstalled under lots of roads throughout Sweden. It’s a way to quickly make roads impassable. The rifle you asked about near the start was an AK4 rifle, which is a version of the G3 with a stock and forend from Spuhr.

All roads tunnels railways Bridges dams and other types of infrastructure was built with secret self destruct points built into it atleast up until around 2000 and this was the standard all over sweden. this meant that there was special secret hollow places on bridges for example where you either placed the explosive charges or where you simply tossed it into. this meant no young man had to sacrifice himself for the greater good. there was also backup bridges ready to be put up all around sweden where the road was deemed strategically important. these bridges was hidden close to the water or directly in the water in special bunkers. the planning done under the cold war was truly bonkers in a good way when it came to strategicall planning for when we defended the homeland.

My Swedish Grandfather was volunteering helping Finland in WWII while the family was poor with my mother and sister who he left for some years. He come back and made another 4 kids. I found out why some years ago. We have 50% Sami Blood. The Sami who are our indigenous people. They have very common habits as the North Americas Indians ( When they were active ) and they are spread in Northern Norway, Sweden and Finland and still. They know how to handle coldness. I was in the Special Coastel Ranger forces in the Swedish Marines and totally love to be out in the fields whatever weather. Nevertheless, Finland has since the 1200 Century always supported Sweden and been the toughest warriors in the war campaigns against Russia and supporting the Swedish Kings and mostly Carolus XII who was a real badass King. Nowadays the Swedes has the most advanced military vehicles and that are made for extreme coldness. Only Problem with the Swedes we have not been in War in 210 years, but I am quite sure the Viking DNA will quickly blossom and we will be Brothers in Arms with the Finns who in my opinion are more Swedish than ourselves...

The I19 Regiment is was founded in 1892. During the Cold War the main roads were prepared with tunnels for adding explosives. This been my regiment for the last 35 years and I'm still active there. The history of this regiment goes back to 1841. It were sprung out of Västerbottens regiment when the need of a more northern regiment became a fact back then. The garrison in Boden is the largest in Sweden with I19 Norrbottens regiment as the center piece. The explosion you saw is a very common strategy used for blowing up roads. Beside many roads you have marshlands so if there is a destroyed road you cannot just go beside it without going through the marshland. I can tell you that it is not easy to march through that area. The most difficult enemy in this area is the terrain and climate, mostly for the enemy while we are trained in it.

From wikipedia, translated: Norrbotten's regimental motto is "They have never folded or for its own part lost", which is said to have been said after the battle at Villmanstrand. The one when Västerbotten's regiment participated with a battalion that remained in the battle, when the other units retreated. The Norrbotten regiment, which was formed from the Västerbotten regiment in 1841, adopted this motto. According to legend, the regiment remained in place (against impossible odds) because it still had some officers who had been fighting in Charles XII's army. (Carolus Rex, the warrior King). Also, the text at the start of the video translates to "The lock in the north" which refers to the old, interconnected, fortresses surrounding the city of Boden. The name implies "Here, but not any further". The forts where built to stop a Russian land invasion, were manned during both World Wars and the Cold war, but were decommissioned in 1990's. The forts never saw any action. So, I guess now the army refers to the Norbotten regiment as our lock in the north instead :)

Currently serving in Luleå, the neighbour town to Boden, at their air force base F21. Last week we hit -30 degrees celsius and of course we got sent out in the woods to live in tents for a few days😅 Even though it sucks at the moment it’s such good training to complete tasks in brutal conditions. Everything becomes so much easier when you have experienced insane cold and darkness 80% of the day!

I served at I19 twenty years ago. Loved every minute of it. The weather is indeed bitter cold, but the level of training is fantastic. It really teaches you about how to deal with the arctic climate. During the arctic soldier course we learned a lot from the Inuit. One trivial thing, was that our captain often used a three finger salute in the field, that we had to replicate. The pinky and thumb had to touch, if the remaining fingers were bent. It meant you were too cold. Can’t remember what we had to shout, but it was something like “nanook nanook” to confirm we could continue. As said, fantastic place.

Im a tank gunner in this regement. The regement (Norrbottens regemente) has been operational in different capacitys since 1841 thereby all the history references, some of which are back from when war was top fed muskets, cavalry and canons. As for what serving in northern sweden is like, the summers are actually a lot warmer then you might think; often between 20 and 30 degrees c. The winters can be tough mainly because of the dark (you barely see the sun in mid winter) but there are som really cool highs as well, as shown in the video.

My grandpa was Swedish, and his parents came to the USA at the turn of the century. He was so nice and kind. His dad created a construction company here in the Detroit area, and him and his twin brother and older brother grew up working with their dad. After Pearl Harbor, my grandpa and his twin brother enlisted to join the army. His twin was rejected because of having a heart or lung defect. Anyway, he was involved in the Normandy invasion. The details are hard to know exactly, because he never talked about the war except on a few occasions, but supposedly him or his platoon were supposed to be on the first wave at either Omaha or Utah beach, but because the army needed camps and such to be setup up ASAP as soon as the beachhead was secure, his construction experience was noted, and he and/or his platoon were put on the supply line that followed the first wave. He spent the rest of the war in norther France and the Rhineland. He later revealed when he was in his 80s or 90s (he passed in 2014 at 93) that he spent a lot of time building coffins for fallen soldiers during the rest of the war. I have a lot of pictures he took of the destruction in Europe that he captured, and I hope nothing like that ever happens at that scale again even though it has to some extent. War might be interesting, but it is not something to be revered like how a lot of action movies I grew up with made it out to be. My second cousin has been in the USAF since right before 911, and I know one vet that served in both Afghanistan and Iraq over 20 years ago now. He has a lot of PTSD issues, and my best friend who is close friends with him knows about that more than he does.

This is where I grew up. In March-April, when the sun has come back and turns the snow into pure white light, the beauty of this winter is really overwhelming. But you have to get through the months of constant darkness and cutting cold. At below -30°C you can feel your eyelashes and nostrils get "sticky", like they want to freeze together when you blink and breathe. You learn from childhood to stay warm, to layer clothing, to make sure you are always dry - and to love the outdoors in any weather. In really cold temperatures, you have work slow and watch how much you sweat. It's hard to imagine how disastrous it would be to come here without experience of living in the arctics or subarctics, or not having the proper equipment or knowing how to make a shelter find food.

The rifle you asked about is the Ak4. It’s the old 7.62 service rifle refitted as a DMR using a kit from Swedish company SPUHR. If you are looking for top of the line scope mounts, SPUHR is the way to go. Regarding the delaying action with explosives: Historically some infrastructure in Sweden has been prepped with what we called “detonation drums “ which is more or less what they are lowering the charges into. Not really incorporated (at least not known to the public) in new infrastructure but from the Cold War there are bridges and stuff stilled prepped for specific spots to place explosives

The reason Boden is a military town is the Fortress that was in use between 1907 to 1998. 20 years ago it had a regiment of every sort but today it only has two, though I19 as the vide mentions is working up the ability to train Anti-Air Engineer and Signal troops. All these used to have regiments represented in Boden Lv7 S3 and Ing3. The artillery regiment A8 mentioned in the video is a re-branding of A9 that was moved to Boden 4 years after the original A8 had been closed. Since A9 got it's original garrison back in middle Sweden it was decided to rebrand A9 to A8 and give the new regiment the name A9. Why i'm so upset about this is that A8 was the first regiment to close in 2000 and they had the best food in the garrison. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaLHfpdubNdjkLc here is an untexted video on the Boden Fortress

History - Short - "Norrbottensbrigaden" -> Before we downsized our defence force the Army branch had a lot of educational regiments up north (Military service time units). These regiments built up a conscript based force in the north compiled into a lot of brigades (Wartime organizations are built up not of regiments except for a few exceptions). What this clip show is what we do today. With a smaller manpower pool we now have one brigade and to that a number of "freestanding" companies to bring in more power from. Short Norrbottensbrigaden, as you see it in the clip, is a young unit but the units that buuild it up have a long history in the area, in its basic setup. The weapon you asked about is a Swedish licenced HK G3 (We call that AK4) setup as a squad DMR. Its that and the KSP58 (M240) that use the M80 ball, 7.62 round, in the squad. "Homemade" food - One of the most defended units in the brigade :) :) ;) The brigade have units that cook real food, for the soldiers. So good getting the real deal over the MRE whenever there is a possibility to. When the squadleader delegate someones to pick up some varm real food, the moral, in the cold, reach the moon. When snow cover the north the day temp run between about -10 to -23. ( 14 to -9 F) Without wind chill, in general, Dec to Feb. Sometimes we get the northen wind and the temp drop lower. Lately the temp been around the -40 (-40 F) for some time. One need to coachtape anything metal on the personal gear so one not get freezeburns or even getting you skin stuck to metal surfaces.

About the soldiers main gun. From the 1960´s we had AK4. That weapon is a modified Swedish version of the German Heckler & Koch G3. Those are upgraded with red point sights and are used by Hemvärnet (Homeguard) , a voluntary branch of the army. I´ve seen several videos where people misstake it for FN FAL. From the end of the 80´s and onwards we use AK5. The weapon is developed from the Belgian FNC 80 automatic carbine from FN Herstal and is chambered for the 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge. The first versions of the weapon had a longer barrel and a different stock than todays version. Sweden and Finland has done a joint deal with the Finnish company SAKO (owned by Beretta) for two different AKs (5.56 and 7.62), sharp shotter rifles and sniper rifles.

You asked about things needed to keep attention to while fighting during these conditions, and a few things which I haven't seen in the comments: Water, you don't sweat when it's very cold so it's easy to forget to hydrate, and since you now and then end up shivering from the cold, your body consumes more than you realize. Being fatigued (because as you mention, it´s tedious to move around in snow) and dehydrated is a bad combination. We kept the water bottles inside the coat close to the chest to keep the water at body temperature as well, since that meant the body didn't have to use energy to warm up the water. And eat whenever you get an opportunity, we kept a mixture of nuts and raisins in our pockets. As some have pointed out the carbine is an AK-5, but you might know it as a FN FNC which is the weapon it's based on. The wooden stock is part of a KSP 58 light machine gun, originally the FN MAG.

People in the US are often unfamiliar with the Winter War in which Finland was invaded by the Soviet Union in 1939 (I think). Stalin, who at the time was SOMEWHAT allied with Nazi Germany (they both had plans of carving up and invading Poland), tried blitzkrieg tactics that were not really conducive to Finland's terrain. It was not a total victory for either side, and you have to hand it to the Finns for their ingenuity during that war, but it did convince Hitler erroneously that the Soviets were weak, which supposedly led Hitler to believe Operation Barbarossa would be easy.

That’s my old brigade… Did 15 months there.. We did loads of training in -32f (-35c) every thing gets harder due to the cold. During winter you are happy if you see the sun 1h It’s history goes way back check the history about the fortresses in Boden they were built 1900-1918

While I did my military service in Stockholm in an urban warfare specialist battalion back in the early 90's, I exist because my dad hooked up and later married a local girl from up there. So I spent a lot of summers and winters there. The helicopter school were close to my grand parents' home. So the sound of Hueys had quite a bit of nostalgia for me. Sweden have had a strong presence up there since the early 20th century when they built Boden Fortress.
