Nick,..first off, thank you for your service, dedication and sacrifice! I am also thankful I found your channel. New subscriber now!. Our son ships out in Sept. He recently came home after doing PT with the recruiters and changed the order of preferred MOS. His first choice is Recon. I watched your video of the difference in Recon and Raider. My question is: when a young Marine quits the tryout phase and how they weed out the ones that cannot make it. What happens to those that quit and walk away from the pool? Do they get thrown into their 2nd MOS choice? Rotated back into the "tryout" phase of becoming a Recon Marine? Thx for any feedback.

I want to be a Recon Marine so bad I had this dream since I was 8 and did wrestling for 3 years to toughen me up and learned that I can achieve anything I want as long as I work for it. What's holding me back is my simple battery charge due to anger issues but I'm working on getting it dropped as I pray for a second chance while I prepare for the Marines and Recon. I don't know what else I could live for if I lose this opportunity if the charge doesn't get dropped.

Great video! Your production skills just keep getting better and better! Next up I think you should try and get your audio post happening a little better. The timing of the dialogue edits could be better in spots, especially against the music. The dialogue needs a de-esser and you should roll off the bottom end below 80Hz or so to tame the thumps. And the level of the voice over jumps up and down a bit, you should squash it with a compressor/limiter. But overall great video. You are kicking butt man!! Cheers!
@agmsmith40796 жыл бұрын
Nick Koumalatsos ... cool, don’t be staid to automate the music and the voice over too. Like at :22 the music should swell up a few dB until your VO comes in at :43. At :43 you can bring the music back down a few dB. The phrase “those who went before me” at :55 gets lost in the drum rhythm playing behind it, so cut the VO and move it a little later or push the VO up a little bit. Putting compression/limiting on your VO can help with this too. After putting a compressor on it, you may not need to automate the VO up right there. But for clarity it might work better to slide it a hair later so the percussion rhythm right there doesn’t mask the words... the next few VO phrases are really quiet and hard to hear until 1:13 when the phrase “And dedicating myself to the completion of the...” comes in pretty loud. Also the “p” on completion pops, doing a “wide band” de-esser will tame that “p” and the other plosives that happen throughout the video. If you aren’t recording VO with a pop stopper in front of the mic, you should. The Stedman metal pop stoppers work great and don’t dull the high frequencies at all like the fabric pop stoppers tend to do. At 1:30,you have a lip smack. It sounds like a like click. You should just cut those out because they can get distracting to the listener and when you start using compressors and limiters they can cause the compressors to freak out and over compress. One thing that might be cool is to put a little bit of reverb on your VO so it doesn’t feel soooo disconnected with the epic ness off the music. Not s lot, just a little out of a small hall or small plate verb reall quiet in the background. If you have a Predelay setting in the verb, set it somewhere around 20 or 30ms. And if you have any sort of high damp, high frequency roll off or low pass type filtering in the verb, make sure you set it (or them if there is more than one) to somewhere around 4,000 Hz (4KHz) or lower otherwise the verb will add a weird sizzle to your voice. Sometimes a long delay can be cool too on VO... so the. It kind of feels like your voice is echoing through the ages or something like that. One other thing I would play around with... it’s great how you have “spirit, heart” in the hole in the music right before 2:07... but the the phrase “a recon marine can speak without saying a word, and achieve what only other can imagine” should slide later so that the phrase starts at 2:09 or 2:10, after the music hits the braaam. Right now you have that phrase in the riser from 2:07-2:09 and the high pitch of the riser and it’s growing intensity distracts from the VO, so sliding the VO over a little will put it over the braaam which is more static and not changing intensity. That will help the VO stand out... and you can automate the volume of the braaam down a little bit after the hit to make a little more room for the VO too. That should time out well too because then the “only other imagine” should fall right on the fade to black or picture. Anyway, these are just some suggestions. Try them and see how they work against picture. Another general tip/trick we usually try to maintain as much as possible. Any time there is a big hit in the music, don’t put dialogue/VO on it, put it around it (before and after). Same thing with big sound effects like explosions or booms. I noticed at around :48 onward you were cutting the VO so it leads into and over the music hits. Like “I accept all CHALLENGES involved in this profession”, “forever shall I STRIVE...” etc. challenge and strive are placed on big hits in the music. You did a great job cutting the visual to those hits, but now you are also cutting the VO to those hits instead of around them... think of those hits has mountains and the space between as valleys. You want the VO in the valleys between the hits as much as possible. It’s not always possible. Sometimes there is just no way around it. But in that spot especially it really feels like you have a lot of room to slide the VO around to get it in between the music hits instead of on top of them. Anyway... some food for thought and some things to experiment with. Have a great time in Greece!!! Finish your book if you haven’t already! :-) Cheers!
@agmsmith40796 жыл бұрын
Nick Koumalatsos ... to show you what I mean about the verb and delay on the VO, here is a video I did a quick mix on for some friends of mine... kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3O5XoGPpqikhbc The VO is taken from the films and is was bone dry and felt really disconnected from the music. So I put some reverb and delay on it and it did the trick. This amount of it would probably be too much for your video because the music you are using isn’t as ambient. But you can hear the “effect” it has on the voice and the overall impact to the story. If you listen all the way through you’ll hear the one problem I had with it, right before the groove kicks in.... the VO gets buried a little. I had it louder but because this video is supposed to feature the music, the composer and the video producer asked me to duck the VO at the climax so you could hear the music... oh well! You win some, you lose some! Hahaha. But it does sound pretty epic. Anyway... it’s an example of how you can add some verb and delay to a VO to increase its impact/overall “epicness”. :-).
