I was a MSTCS who later retired as a CWO. In A-School we were primarily taught meteorology and oceanography. Pollution response was taught as more of a collateral duty. Later I specialized in MER and ended up working for an oil company on their pollution response management team. Yes, they do pay very well. Nice video, thanks.

I was an MST in the late 1970’s. I took water samples on Weathers Station Hotel off Virginia, flight weather briefings for pilots at Clearwater Airsta and ran a side looking airborne radar on a C-130 for International Ice Patrol and Icewarn on the Great Lakes. I also had to wait for two years to get into Class A school. The rate was changing when I got out and turning more into a Port Safety type of job. As a side note recent Commandant Zunkunft was my boss on the Taney when he was an Ensign.

This was a very helpful video, thanks! I'd be interested in a video about those who join the USCG after graduating from college, if you haven't done so already.

As one of the “original” MST’s 1968 if memory serves. I find it interesting how the rate has changed its mission. To be flexible with times is always a good thing.

Really appreciate all the work you put into your videos! Your interview with that ME convinced me that coast guard is the branch I want to join. It would be really cool if you could interview someone from HITRON

Thanks for this, I just took the ASVAB and qualified for every A School. MST, after this, is still one of my top choices. I’ll go that route if I don’t make the Officer program

Hey man, love the vids! I had a few questions.. I’m looking to join the coast guard. I’m 100% in to doing it! My question is, do you go to boot camp with a rate or do you have to go in un-rated?
@militaryjourneymen
@militaryjourneymen 4 жыл бұрын
unrated
@knuteklotz6095
@knuteklotz6095 4 жыл бұрын
Right now there are very few ratings that a recruiter can “guarantee” you. Those rates that are currently critical to the Coast Guard, (AST, ET, CS, & OS). All other ratings people must join “unrated” as you ask. That is for joining full time or “active duty”. For “reserve” or part-time we are hiring for any open positions, so essentially all reservists are hired for their particular rate already.

Yes, tours are 4 years. However your first tour may be shorter, depending on when your name comes up for A school. Your tours can also be shorter based on various voluntary scenarios.
