I finished the game a few days ago, and honestly, this game deserves a better reputation! It's not perfect (as is no game), but the storyline, characters and replay value are all so good and beautifully handled that it has made its place as one of my new favourite games!

It gets terrible again 4th sea onwards. Some of the most egregiously bad RPG design. If you play literally any other RPG you will know how boring, safe these characters are. And Acquire is throwing backtracking and FF6's ruined world at us like it's a new concept, but we only have 2 party members. Oh and they throw enemy recolors at us like it's a brand new concept in the year 2024. It's not a good game. If Square Enix made this game, it'd get torn apart. Too long, no payoff. No backstories. No depth.

I have a legitimate question for everyone who dislikes the changes to Luigi. Aside from Superstar Saga, Luigi has simply been the guy that follows behind Mario, jumps with B, and helps Mario during combat and Bros. Moves. You don't really EVER control him in the overworld unless the Bros. have been separated. So, what is the big issue with Luigi moving and acting on his own in this game? Even if it's AI, this game attempts to give Luigi as much initiative as Mario, making it feel like you are actually on an adventure with him. I genuinely don't understand how this is a negative, so I would love to hear everyone's reason for disliking this change.

I dont think Dream team's world is generic at all, it's far more interesting than the other games in the series (haven't played Brothership though) Like,yeah,they have "generic" themes,but the visuals are pretty cool,and there is a twist to them, *A comercial area full of people and a tourist inscription building *A Red dirt Mountain with a lava and ice top, each one side by side *A mystical forest with a forgotten ruins theming *An Old Magic Castle with an unexplored area that the habitants of the Island haven't Reformed *A dessert that has been turned into a Mining Area *And a beach, which yeah,i think it's the most boring area in the game,but still is pretty cute And without mentioning the dream world areas,which yes are based on the real world areas,but the Surrealist artwork,and the expanded mechanics from Bis makes them fun to explore in my opinion By the way,Good video,I think you were far more fair with the game than the IGN review,I can't talk much because I haven't played the game,but the IGN review sounded more like what the guy WANTED the game to be more than he experiencing the actual game
@Just_ShaunКүн бұрын
I’m so close to finishing the game, and I can’t believe how decisive it is. I really enjoyed the game, but I definitely agree with some of IGNs comments. The plug characters look far too generic to me and lack expression, the islands were awesome but the islets were pretty much all the same. I definitely noticed slowdown in exploration at times, and felt lag spikes during some bros moves (could be a skill issue - Zapperator in particular). The Luigi argument is silly, he was so stiff in previous games, stuck behind Mario, so giving the bros more space while keeping them tethered to each other was fab. The fact that this would be a non-issue if you selected Luigi with B in battles and they removed commanding Luigi in the overworld is enough reason for me to not find it bothersome. The areas where Mario and Luigi are separated are great, and reminded me of partners in time. I just think people are misremembering how Luigi controlled in previous games. The sections with the flowers in floral island and the ball challenges are very similar to the mini games from bowsers inside story. The sections where Luigi acts independently to Mario whether he’s collecting coins or jumped across platforms weren’t in previous titles because he was always glued behind Mario. I was never bothered by Luigi’s ocassional brain blasts because they were never as bad as dream team, where it felt like Luigi would constantly stop us to have to explain how to pull his mustache or interact with the environment. I was critical of Kevin Afghani’s voice performance at the start of the game, because the iconic gibberish sounded off especially for Luigi, but his voice has grown on me. I still think Charles did a better job at giving them character. But I really like the uniqueness Kevin gives the bros. Luigi’s okie, alright, and leave it to me are so cute and charming. Luigi is just living his best life! Bros moves are both nostalgic and unique, the plugs are genius and the battles feel much more fluid than in previous games, with the fancy new art style enhancing the whole experience. I’m so glad Brothership didn’t bring back the arbitrary 2D sections. If I have to rate it out of 10, I’d give it a 8.5 - in terms of ranking I’d say it’s marginally better than dream team, maybe on par with superstar saga to be fair, better than partners in time, but slightly worse than bowsers inside story.

6:17 About that. I've heard many talks about how long it took to get the hammer when it had taken quite a while to get a hammer in 3 of the other 5 M&L games. Looking through the long play videos online for reference it takes the following amount of time for the 6 games. M&L Superstar Saga: 1:32:00 ish After going through the Intro, Starfields then all of HooHoo mountain. M&L Partners in Time: 1:44:00 ish After the intro and time travel plus most of the forest. M&L Bowser's inside story: You lose the hammers but regain them about 35:00 ish which is honestly a more satisfying pace. M&L Dream Team: A whopping 2:10:00 ish! Your comment about Dream Team taking so long is definitely the worst of the 6. M&L Paper Jam: You start with them and never lose or regain them from what I saw. So... 00:00:00? M&L Brothership: Roughly 1:31:00 more or less Tying with the original Superstar Saga after the first few islands. Depending on if dialogue is skipped or personal play time, Superstar, Partners in Time and Brothership come close to the same pacing with the hammer. Honestly, a better pacing criticism should be about how long it takes to get the first Bros. Attack. The other 5 games get theirs pretty early on, often before you even get the hammer. Like, even Bowser's inside story gets the shell bros. attack right before the hammer. Yet in Brothership it takes 2 hours and 44 minutes or so to get the Red and Green shell Bros. Attack in the same long play video. 3 hrs is insane and more egregious than the hammer.

I found a funny video where someone "slapped IGN" every time they disagreed with them on their review. If you would allow me to copy-paste my long, LONG opinion/comment from there, here you go. "Thank you for this video. Made me feel much better for some reason, lol. (Extra respect for not-slapping in a few cases where the critique was actually valid) You know, if the game really only took 35-ish hours for the reviewer to beat, that means they got bored of it quickly because they did not want to play the game. They didn't want to enjoy it. They just wanted to be done with it pronto, so they could write a review as quickly as possible, and that has ruined their whole perspective on the entire experience. I tried going for as much of a 100% playthrough as I could: I completed every side quest, got every unique collectible tracked on the map or in menus (as far as I know), tried punching every ? Block and picking up every coin in the overworld, talked to as many random NPCs as I could... or in short, I actually engaged with the game as much as possible, trying out everything it had to offer... and I finished clocking in just a bit above 60(!) hours! And you know what? I enjoyed it from beginning to finish. And no, I'm not protecting the game blindly, I do agree that it has some performance issues... but only occasionally. For me personally, it was Shipshape Island that lagged quite a bit, and yes, the loading times travelling between islands or transitioning to battles did feel a bit long, but not to the point like how the IGN reviewer described it. And while the change in Luigi's handling is fairly criticized by both reviewers and fans alike, I'm pretty sure the devs decided to make him auto-follow Mario so the game could have more varied platforming sections in it, which is easier to handle when you only have to concentrate on a single character. Imagine hopping through those springy flowers on Floral Island with the classic M&L controls: you land on the very edge of a flower with Mario, but Luigi rigidly following you falls down, and now you have to fall with Mario, too, as a confused Luigi running into the walls down below prevents you from going further. Luigi being able to detach from Mario and think for himself made him feel more natural, more alive for me. He wasn't just a shadow mimicking Mario's movements with a half second delay, he was an actual character. If enemy's controlled by AI are okay, why not a partner character? (And the limited overworld Luigi controls you do have access to can still be used in very fun ways. My favorite way of engaging battles with a first strike was the "Bro Bait-and-Switch" technique, where you deliberately jump OVER an enemy charging at Mario, but then hammer them with Luigi in the back. :D) And the story? Boy, did the reviewer get EVERYTHING wrong about it! Anyone who played previous M&L games: do you remember Bubbles, creator of the Chuckola Cola, from Superstar Sage? Or Dr. Snoozemore, who was supposed to be a very important character but then only appeared like... twice in the entire story of Dream Team? They were uniqely designed characters, yes, but they were given very minimal roles, and that made their overall presence much less impactful. Only the main antagonists and their underlings were present throughout the entire game in previous M&L titles. But in Brothership? (some spoilers ahead, read carefully!) It was such a unique take on Mario and Luigi story telling how many of the new characters who we've only met for the first time in this game, who were designed for this game specifically, turned out to be such important characters, people who you interacted with throughout the entire story. I'm talking Connie, the IDLE kids, Technikki, Chilliam and Burnadette... not a new character, but Princess Peach also had so much more screen time and so much more interaction with the Bros., it was very refreshing. I personally loved how the circle of friends just kept growing and growing for every new "roundtable meeting" whenever the characters gathered around to discuss strategy about overcoming the next big obstacle in their way. Everyone felt so well designed, helping in their onw way however big or small. I kinda grew to like each of those characters, kinda like a... Bond formed between us? :P And yes, the script was a bit more verbose to give each character time to shine, but hey! Most story driven RPGs are like this, aren't they? Yeah, Brothership might not have been the "minimal talking, maximum slapstick" style like most other games, but it had plenty of "Mario and Luigi humor" moments where I laughed out loud, especially since the characters were so well animated and expressive with their new 3D models. (Yes, I did chuckle at every single one of Luigi's landings when arriving at a new island.) I also think it was very clever how the devs handled "backtracking". Unlike previous M&L titles where most areas, including overworld areas felt like dungeons, aka you clear it once but then never go back there 'cause it's a chore to get out and back on track of the main story again, the small islands of Brothership felt really cosy and easy to memorize/get around in, plus the Golden Pipe allowing you to get out of them any time made me want to go back to previous islands and do every side quest as soon as they became available. And finally, let's touch upon the tutorials and "hand-holding". Real fans will know, but Brothership is one of the LEAST hand-holding titles in the series. Instead of building every minor detail of battles into an overly long dialogue, where Toadsworth stops time before every single button press and tells you to do the thing NOW, all tutorials are UI based, and you can mash through them really quickly if you want to (I've seen streamers ignore the tutorials only to be confused 5 seconds later because they didn't know what they were doing :P). Yes, you are given a quick lesson on new mechanics, but come on! This is a family friendly Nintendo game, and after the long years of wait, this might be a lot of young gamers' first Mario and Luigi title. You cannot design a game like this around 30 years old gaming veterans who know from playing RPGs for 5000+ hours what an Attack button is. And even though I've played every game in the series, I did read all the tutorials this time, too, in case something might have changed. (I don't even understand how people want to play any game without knowing how it works/what you're supposed to do. Don't you need to read the rules of a card/board game before you can play? Or do some people play Monopoly just by looking at the pictures on the board and nothing else? If a game, like a Souls game, doesn't tell you what each stat or move does, won't you just read the tooltips or look it up online anyway? Why is it bad if a game offers you an easier way to get yourself accustomed to the rules without any external help? Just because a tutorial pops up, it doesn't mean "the game looks down on you", it just tries to help new players. People should stop hating tutorials with such passion, it's honestly really annoying.) Phew... that was lot off my chest. If you took the time to read my comment, thank you very much. Feel free to rate this comment a 5/10 because it was overly long and subjective and biased, and defending a game that I personally enjoyed playing a lot. :P"

This comment is a 10/10 since it described exactly how much I loved this game and how hypocritical some reviewers are in comparing certain aspects of the game to previous entries. Nostalgia is supposed to be rewarding for those who have played the previous entries(like the reefs). I hate when people use nostalgia as a weapon to attack a new entry that take new creative liberties to set itself apart in a way that stays true to the series(especially when that nostalgia is so bleak that people don't realize they are bashing an improvement).

I'm on the area after brrning sea and So far, the only thing they missed the mark on was dumbing down Luigi. It's like they started working on his mechanics and then gave up. All they had to do is add the last 2 feats he had. We can have him jump but is pointless since he does that automatically and when in battle, they should have just kept it the A button since that it is what you have to select the move with and doesn't really make sense how they did it.

I don't have a problem with Luigi being under AI control. I've only gotten him stuck once, and sure it cost me 20 seconds of redoing work, but it wasn't unbearable. While I could control both bros in 2D just fine, I'm not sure I'd want to control them both in a 3D world and time both bros jumps over 3D gaps simultaneously. This seemed like a natural progression to adopt when going into 3D. I mean, you just showed on your video how Mario goes one path to collect red coins while Luigi goes another to collect green coins, and they use this gimmick many times in the game. Couldn't easily do that in 2D space, and still can't do that if Luigi is always following Mario, and having to time button presses to make Mario jump then immediately having Luigi jump so they can both make it to the platform to get to the next batch of coins (and then I'd have to run back down the other path to collect the ones Luigi would have got for me.) Having played other games where your partner is under AI control and helps with tasks, especially collection tasks like pulling up the Plug Radishes, I think Luigi's AI control is mostly more good than bad. And if you have a problem with Luigi collecting things for you, you don't have to press that L button. You can lead Mario to pulling up each of those Plug Radishes or collecting all the Lumenade fairies on your own if you want to take the extra time and effort. Why have Luigi stand there like an idiot and watch Mario collect the fairies while some of them fly off in another direction. If it makes sense for Luigi to take action on its own to help, why shouldn't he? There are already too many games with two heroes (each of the previous Mario & Luigi games for example) where the second hero doesn't feel like they do enough. They've fixed that here, and in most cases made it optional, so then why is it still a problem? It's not "Mario WITH Luigi" its "Mario AND Luigi", so I like seeing Luigi doing as much as Mario. And if you don't want him to, they gave you the option to keep that finger off the L button. Having the second character just mindlessly follow the lead and only take action during battles is no different than the other Mario RPGs, so I rather like that they've added some difference to the formula here. The one thing I wish I could do is swap the lead when I want to, controlling Luigi while Mario is run by AI. This happens in a few short spots, but if I could control either and have the other under optional AI control, that would really nail the "and" part of the title. I'd also be able to take better advantage of first strike setups by configuring the brothers differently. You've mentioned allowing the second bro to be under second player human control, and that would be solid too, though I play solo and such an option doesn't appeal to me as much as swapping the two bros under single human player control.
@thesnatcher3616Күн бұрын
The only real thing that "controlling" luigi in the older games(you didn't, you controlled Mario who luigi stuck to like a flea) yielded you were extra inputs in battle and in some puzzles, certain transformations required to progress in the overworld and pressing a and b constantly to get them both to jump over a gap. In instances like that, it still might as well have been just one input. But I do agree with your final assessment. It also would have been cool if you could separate them at will. They kind of did what you said in Partners in Time, and it would have been nice to see each bro get a more individual "nerfed" moveset in order to give more risk and tradeoff to separating. Basically it would have led to some sick puzzles and level layouts(for example the final castle in Pit where the babies have to scale the castle rafters in order to open up the path to Princess Shroob).

I don’t get why people talk about pacing issues when you have the ability to fast forward dialogue and cutscenes by holding B. I love Dream Team, but I’m not gonna deny it has a ton of talking and the tutorials are a slog, made worse by the inability to fast forward. But Brothership that option is available, though it took me a while to realize it. Not that I used it often. The game gets very difficult in the last third with how tough it is to read enemies’ attacks. I doubt babies could dodge them. Both Bowser fights felt more like endurance tests with how much difficulty I had countering the attacks. Now that’s not necessarily a knock against the game, but I certainly felt inadequate about my skills. The story was far more compelling than most other Mario games. I feel like people want something simple like Superstar Saga, with more emphasis on gameplay and less complex storytelling.

I agree with you it's absolutely not a 5 I enjoyed the story and the return of a couple bros attacks made me giddy only I did feel the end of the game dragged a bit though that is more because I did everything available when it was available it's the completionist in me that caused a bit of burn out

i feel like most of what ign says with the review can be invalidated in so many ways, most of the issues they had were in the past mario and luigi games as well. And in my opinion, the performance issues on my side weren't bad/ almost unnoticeable at times. Luigi being an npc is actually fine imo, as past mario and luigi games, luigi is always staying behind mario and very close to him, most of the actions you do is with mario and it feels like luigi is just tethered to mario. Pressing L for him to move around to do his action feels like he is not sticking behind mario except for bros attacks or bros moves. The only time luigi is independent in past games is when mario and luigi are forcibly separated, so it feels nice that luigi actually has something to do. Overall this game is an 8/10 for me. It has its problems, but their are so many positives about it that outweighs it.
@Luigi56999Күн бұрын
I completely disagree that Luigi is an npc in fact I believe it’s a little overblown. While I do agree the physics could have used some polishing and optimization and better realization, but I feel some of the puzzles with the Luigi logic are actually fun.

Gave my thoughts on the IGN review & game in a previous thread; leaving it here: '....nah he's def familiar; he's just objectively wrong af here. This game is at LEAST an 8....I'm actually leaning towards 9/9.5. The characters are endearing, the writing has made me belly laugh a few different times, level design & mechanics are creative af, the hub world is well-done & has a fast travel option he never once mentioned; & evolves nicely as the game goes on (as do the islands), the frame rate hiccups reaaaaally ain't that serious & are less of an issue than the were in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (which got a way higher rating even though the frame rate was likewise listed as a negative), the tutorials are mostly subtle & mostly skippable, & it took all of 10-15 min to get used to using A for confirming Luigi's initial selection. And Luigi, while not fully/directly controllable is extremely well-implemented even w/ the AI aspects (to the point I would even say this is the most brotherly they've ever felt) I'm actually glad they bucked tradition & took the risk to incorporate him this way (the contrary being a hill the IGN reviewer is ready to die on apparently)' Might I add that as amazing & expansive as the battle system is; I love that the variety in enemy types AND attacks constantly keep me on my toes

Oh and when does it get more challenging? I agree with IGN with some of the things. I am just after the brrning sea and so far in my 20 something hours there has been no challenge. I have so many items stored from doing all the pointless side quests. I never died once and never had to use items during any battles. It's just too easy. Even my 5 and 8 year old are breezing through it. Story is OK. Same go here do this, go here collect that then beat game. Same as previous Mario and Luigi games. I don't agree with the 5 but.. I would say it's a 6 or 7 if there has to be a number attached to it.

In the first couple of hours it is very slow paced, and in the entirety of the game there is A LOT of dialogue. Quirs a lot of side quest are meaningless, but sometimes fun to do, and the gameplay, mainly battling, is absolutely amazing! If you dont mind long games, you could easily get 30 hours without completing the game yet. I havent completed everything, but I am over halfway done, and I can say that this is a really good game. Slow at times, but really good. I play it casually, a couple of days of the week for an hour, maybe two, and this is, imo, THE way to enjoy this game the most.
