Really is crazy how detailed everything is. I’ve been wanting a pixel art revert for Mario side scrollers for a while. Mario wonder was solid but the movement and momentum definitely left a decent amount to be desired after all the modern platformers that have come out. Great vid 👍

the amount of care and love put into every tiny detail in Rainbow Stars is insane. the little things like the water reflection, Starry's expression changing in the overworld if Mario falls into the water, the subtle blurriness effect with the binoculars for the depth perception and Starry commenting on your jump here 18:46 (since if you get there from the right he doesn't have that first line of dialogue) are the kind of things that make this project such an amazing love letter the Mario games as a whole ^u^

Early impressions of starry gameplay mechanics: i wish he worked more like cappy but not in the same way, let me explain. Give starry a dedicated throw button like cappy rather than an equip then throw, and tie the up and down angles to holding up or down when you hit throw (diagonals work too.) Now instead of a bounce like cappy make starry give mario a small momentum boost in the direction he is moving. The immediate use is simple, throw starry forward while running to get a speed boost for a second before returning to normal speed, more use cases can come from it being a more simple and dedicated tool for mario. For example: throw starry forward mid air before a dive (like cappy) to get a momentum boost during your dive making it a really fast and long dive (rather than a double jump like cappy) similar to a long jump but in mid air, which can also lead to rolling out of your stardive like you would a normal dive to take advantage of its property to keep your momentum. Another example: throw starry up before a jump and jump into starry for a momentum boost mid jump for a bigger faster jump, which can also lead to throwing starry after landing from a double jump and triple jumping into starry for a insanely big jump (a star jump if you will.)
