For those unaware, the spider guiding Mario to heaven is based on a real Japanese short story published in 1918 where the Buddha glances at a pond through which he can see hell. In its depths he spots a man destined to rot there who had only a single good deed to his name, when he spared the life of a spider that he was about to step on. The Buddha lowers a thread of spider silk down to the man who begins to climb his way up to heaven. Others residing in hell begin to climb after the hell which leads the man to claim that the thread is for him alone. This selfish statement causes the thread to snap, condemning the man to hell for eternity.

The spider thread thing is based off of the story in a dungeon in The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword. In The Ancient Cistern, Link travels through the dungeon, ending up in a hell-like area but is able to escape by climbing a single, thin spider's thread. He is followed by several zombie bokoblins, the residents of this hell area, who want to escape along side him. Link greedily slashes at them with his sword as they try to climb up behind him, being rewarded for his greed by being the only one to escape. This dungeon is later referenced in an ancient japanese story that had basically the same plot, but takes a few liberties with it.

The spider plotline is a reference to a Japanese Buddhist story. In the story, the Buddha sees a sinner down in hell who did one good deed in his life; sparing the life a spider. Buddha lowers a spider's thread down into hell for the sinner to use to climb out, but the sinner refuses to let anyone else climb the thread, fearing it'll snap under the weight. Ironically, his selfishness causes the thread to snap and he's condemned to hell forever.

WOW that second hack was sick as all hell, i'm sad i wasn't there to vote on that one. short and sweet, extremely solid pranks, clean aesthetic, good humor and just enough writing to land the jokes without becoming a dialog box snoozefest. and somehow, despite having seen hacks that convert mario 64 into a point-and-click or a shmup or a rhythm game or a mech battler, the squash and stretch on mario ground pounding still blew my mind. i wouldn't be surprised if other hacks have done that before but it looks fantastic either way

Was the whole premise of the T.R.O.L.L hack stemmed from that one moment in Chaos 64 where Simple said “YOU HAVE FAILED WALL JUMP 80 EXPLOSIONS JUST FOR YOU” or something to that effect on a big boos haunt attempt? I had already thought about that moment when I saw failure meant multiple explosions. Then at 10:10, they specifically have a “don’t fail at wall jumping” trial and I feel like that really cements it. What an awesome thing to reference if it really inspired it, or just a really cool coincidence if it didn’t do it intentionally.
