So Mario the music box was made because the creator of the game was going through some real rough depression, so as a coping mechanism they made a game containing all of their darkest thoughts and then made their comfort characters (the Mario bros) the protagonists.

"The" (or coronation day as most people call it) is actually pretty neat but from what i remember, the game wasnt actually fully complete and some endings/lore tidbits were left out of the game because they werent ready (i think, could also just be the developers hiding it through said coder knowledge). It is a interesting game though and theres a 44-some minute video explaining the whole thing which is worth a watch if your ever bored.

@@CorpseSyndrome I may only be one person, but I want to say that I DO enjoy the game. I enjoy Mario and I have never been somebody to normally enjoy horror games. If it wasn't for this game I probably wouldn't be as comfortable with horror as I am now. I still am not the kind of person to play corpse party or the like, but this game holds a special place in my heart. Honestly, this fan game was and still is one of my driving passions that makes me want to learn to be an indie game dev. I may not be that far yet, but if even just a small spin off of a bigger project I wanted to make a game inspired by (Mario) The Music Box some day!

The issue with Mario horror games is that Mario is such an inherently silly character it cancels out all the horror elements. You can't have dark themes of death, murder and suicide with a guy that jumps around, collects coins, eats mushrooms to grow bigger and goes "Wahoo! Yipee! Letsa go! Itsa me, Mario!" How is he meant to react to a horror situation? Sure he's killed plenty of enemies, but they don't actually die as they just puff into smoke. He has no concept of what a corpse would be because dying in the Mario world is puffing into smoke and respawning with your extra life.

The thing is, Mario and the music box genuinely has a ton of effort put into the art and a decent story, but the bros don't really add anything other than recognition. Scott doing the Mario voice even further emphasises that they DO NOT BELONG HERE. They could have made an original game and sold it if they cut the bros out. I think they could have at least incorporated more of the Mario universe if your going to a horror setting with it. Maybe use a fire flower to light dark halls that you can lose if you take damage. There's the deviant art route where you could make more grotesque versions of the creepier monsters like boos or dry bones. The art is really good so they could probably pull it off Maybe have stars be a temporary shield from ghost attacks. In terms of actual Mario content, there's only a few references to the poison mushroom, 64 piano, and an obvious Luigi's Mansion joke.

There is still absolutely zero reason for the Mario Bros to be a part of the story. You can swap them out for literally anybody else and nothing would change. It just comes off as a desperate attempt at shock value going for the whole 'this ruins your childhood' approach. The only problem with that is I'm not a 15 year old, so this stuff has no impact on me. I'm either rolling my eyes or laughing at just how dumb this whole thing is in the context that this is happening to Mario and Luigi.

I actually think something like this could work as long as Mario and Luigi are in character and you manage to maintain a Mario like vibe, maybe by going for a more cartoony horror like style. I never really minded Mario and the music box because seeing 2 cartoony Plumbers go up against something like this is pretty funny and makes me wish they took advantage of that. We could’ve gotten an interesting story about Mario and Luigi taking on an adventure that’s a lot more serious than what they’re normally use to, yet they still make it through anyway by being themselves and using the same cartoony antics they’re known for, which would be another cool way to handle Mario horror. Also, you’re technically wrong about the whole “ nothing would change if Mario and Luigi were swapped out”. Sure, it kind of sucks that more Mario stuff wasn’t incorporated but since The Mario bros are beloved characters people care about them a lot more and want to see them succeed. You’re right about it in universe though.

I think the Mario 85 demo works well for what it is and I think pretty much everything surrounding it is solid except for the weird hitboxes. MX's design and dialogue in particular I think deserve some praise, his design is very simple and composed of only a few colors, which works considering the color palette of the NES, however what makes him imposing is his sheer size and build, while most spooky gamemen tend to lean on the skinnier and lankier side, MX puts all of that aside and chooses to be far more bulky and stocky, which not only fits his character but gives him a unique kind of imposing feeling to him, you can actually believe he's capable of smashing through those pipes towards the end because of how toweringly huge he is. I feel like the design of his face is also underappreciated, where most spookymen have sharp teeth and bloody eyes, MX has none of that, having square teeth and pitch black eyes without any pupils, which I feel was a good choice as it contributes more to his square and blocky but built demeanor. His dialogue, which while memeable, also feels fresh compared to alot of other dialogue written in these types of games, he talks like an uncle trying to encourage their nephew at the start, reassuring them by calling them "champ" and such, which makes him feel like more human,, which gives the idea that this is more of a personal thing between Lucas and MX, but quickly drops that as soon as you turn your back for a more blunt visceral yell, you can interpret the more passive dialogue in two ways, he's either trying to lull Lucas into a false sense of security, or he's taunting and mocking Lucas because at this point Lucas knows full well that something isn't right and knows MX is behind it, he's just keeping up the facade to further rub this in. the sound design is also very good, MXs vocals sound quite nice while not being too bitcrushed. Being able to actually fight back against MX aswell makes 85 stand out amongst the rest, as you not only have to actually use the environment around you to dodge MX, you can also stomp on his head to briefly stun him, it's not much, but it makes the game MX is playing with you feel like, well, an actual game where both parties have options to fight with, it's not a completely one sided fight. it is kind of sullied by the wonky hitboxes, but I think it still helps the overall experience. Alot of spookymen in these exe games say "do you wanna play a game?" or some variation, but don't actually treat it like a game, basically locking you into one set thing, while MX actually set's the playing field and let's you get the upper hand if you wish. Coronation day, or The, is also a very interesting creepypasta but the spritework doesn't do it any favors, I feel like it works better as a mystery game rather than a horror one, and it's uniqueness and mystery certainly makes it stand out, it's just the spritework that needs a touch-up. It's quite hard to make something spooky out of Mario of all things, but I think 85 in particular did a good job with the concept and I hope to see more content for it soon.

The funny thing with these mascot horror games is the good ones involve putting in effort, which for a series that has better games and better horror games people who aren't willing to dedicate a lot of time to it won't really get out of it. Scott even says 85 was cool at the end, showing that putting the effort in on stuff like that and for example music box allows you to come out with some form of respect for the craft. Horror is more mystique than in your face, and the ghost sprite peach one, was ome of them.
