I took advantage of an error on the right side of the finish line. There is a small polygon that considers itself to be the beginning of your current lap, rather than the end. For the moment that I manipulate my item, I am over that spot (and the game considers me to be in 8th place). This is also possible on Koopa Troopa Beach. If you go slowly, you can watch it happen, but I went so quickly that you can't even see the change onscreen.

it's called luck manipulation. the order and time of every button press in a game influences the psuedorandom number generator, determining "random" events. if you manipulate luck correctly by pressing the right buttons at the right times you'll always get the items you want

@jazztonish It's called luck manipulation, something that's common in TAS. All he does is press the button when he knows he's going to get the mushroom (or the item that he needs atm.) and if he doesn't get it he just re-loads the savestate and changes his timing.

Not really, TAS is more like the person playing can slow down the game to make frame by frame decisions and can go back and try things again if they mess up with save states. They still actually have to be able to do all of the glitches.

there is another track in mario kart 64 call Frappe Snowland, that is possible to do that and it is much easier, however you only skip half a lap. In Frappe Snowland there is a shortcut that allow to skip a lap, the only 2 issues with the skip one lap is with player 2 and player 4, if they do not press b when lakitu put them back on bridge they will fall right throught it even if you succesfuly made the glitch, you will be place in front of the line and still get lap count.....

Not necessarily a cheating device, it's more of a stylized method. Basically, TAS is a speedrun that is played on an emulator which can allow the player to assess features (changing textures, level of difficulty, glitch abuse, etc.) not available to standard players(the ones who play it on a regular or the original console). That's why there are a lot of almost impossible stunts done here.

Tool Assisted Speedrun. It's played frame-by-frame with savestates, rewind, etc. for pure entertainment, not to show skill. BUT NO CHEATS. So, everything in this video could be done on an actual N64 if you found a skilled enough player, but good luck.
